It's not really new, it's just a practical development from the X-45 UCAV. The Navy isn't really going to be able to use this thing until the new Gerald R. Ford carriers come online. The catapults on Nimitz-class carriers have a minimum launch weight that has to be met in order for it to not destroy the airframe as it throws it off the deck. UCAVs have traditionally not been able to meet this minimum take-off weight. The Ford-class carriers, however, use an electromagnetic catapult system that has no such minimum weight limit, thus allowing the operation of lighter craft such as these. So, don't get too excited, folks. The tech isn't too advanced to begin with, and certainly won't see frontline service until at least 2015. |
