Well, Russia has been making some serious efforts to bring their navy into the 21st century. Indeed, they're producing some pretty high-quality ships now. But, they've never really been known for amphibious warfare ships (apart from the Ivan Rogov-class, which is really more of a glorified troop transport). Most of their amphibious fleet is just a collection of transports and landing ships anyways. So, buying a French amphibious assault ship is a good move for Russia. |

Economically, yeah. Anytime someone buys something from you, it's a good day. The problem is international. The US (Republicans, specifically) don't like it that a NATO ally is selling advanced hardware to the Russians, and I'm willing to be we aren't the only ones that are concerned. But, it strengthens what has always been a historically warm relationship between France and Russia (except for that whole episode from 1917-1991 that was such a drag). Whether that balances things out, though, I don't quite think so. |
