* The Ark Royal, launched in 1985, will be decommissioned almost immediately, rather than in 2014, as previously planned
* The construction of two new aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, will go ahead, as it would cost more to cancel the projects than proceed with them
* The navy will lose 4,000 personnel and its surface fleet will be cut from 24 to 19
* Some squadrons of RAF Tornado jets will be saved - although some air force bases will close
* The Army will have to cut up to 7,000 or so personnel over the next five years, and lose 100 tanks and heavy artillery
* The Ministry of Defence itself will face substantial cuts to its civilian staff
* The Nimrod MRA4 reconnaissance plane is to be cancelled, the BBC understands

Interesting cuts. Under cuts like that, the UK can't possibly stay a military power that can compete with the other major European players, despite US support. Seems to me like the Tories are pulling the UK out of world affairs quite a bit.

At least you guys will be completing some of your new (and rather excellent) warships (the carriers, the Type 45s, and the Astute submarines). So I wouldn't see it as a complete bum-fucking experience as any military cut usually ends up being.

How could it cost less to proceed than to stop?

By "lose", do they mean they are going to stop maintaining the tanks and artillery? Or are they actually going to destroy them?

Contract termination fees, for one. BAE has already done a considerable amount of work on the two ships (construction has already begun on at least one), and they'd be shit out of luck otherwise if they found themselves with a bunch of materials they've spent hundreds of millions of pounds on but can no longer use. Plus, if BAE were to lose the contract, I wouldn't be too surprised to see them lay off some of the people in the shipyards and elsewhere, since it doesn't seem like there are any other pressing projects at the moment for them to get to work on. In the end run, it's cheaper for everyone just to go with what has been agreed to be paid, rather than have to deal with all the fees and backlash that would otherwise be incurred.
