 The Swedish Armed Forces (Swedish: Försvarsmakten) is a Swedish Government Agency (Swedish: Myndighet) responsible for the operation of the armed forces of the Realm. The primary task of the agency is to train, organize and to deploy military forces, domestically and abroad, while maintaining the long-term ability to defend the Realm in the event of war. The Supreme Commander (Swedish: Överbefälhavaren), a 4 star general- or flag officer is also the head of said agency, and he is the highest ranking professional officer on active duty. The Supreme Commander in turn reports to the Minister for Defence. There are three service branches: the Army (Swedish: Armén), the Air Force (Swedish: Flygvapnet) and the Navy (Swedish: Marinen), all of whom are since 1994 part of the same agency.
The Armed Forces are divided in three branches:
- The Royal Army (Kungliga armén or KAR);
- the Royal Navy (Kungliga marinen or KMA); and
- the Royal Air Force (Kungliga Flygvapnet or KFV).
The combined strength of the Swedish Armed Forces includes 147.985 personnel with 543 aircraft and 94 ships, and 216.720 reservists with 240 aircraft and 68 ships. Defence expenditures account for 2.245% of the GDP, or $24.95 billion.

Kungliga marinen
 The Swedish Royal Navy (Kungliga marinen) is the naval fleet of the Swedish Armed Forces, including some 94 ships, 21 aircraft and 13.435 personnel, with a further 68 ships and 9.720 personnel in reserve. It is designed to operate mainly in the waters of the Baltic and the Danish Straits, though it has some blue-water capability; its doctrines give emphasis to the use of small vessels for various roles, such as mine-laying, patrolling, anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, etc. As such, it mainly features small multirole combatants such as patrol boats and corvettes, but also a few attack submarines.
Furthermore, the Royal Navy retains some amphibious projection capabilities through the use of four dedicated landing ships and two amphibious transport docks, supported by a large number of troop transports of various sizes. Together with the Royal Marines, part of the Royal Army, this allows the Swedish Armed Forces to easily project their land power anywhere in the Baltic Sea in small but important operations, with strong air and naval support where necessary.
The composition of the combined Royal Navy includes 81 military and 81 support ships of all types. The fleet vessels include the following types:
