Budget deficit for 2010 to reach 3,36%
Finance Ministry proposes new austerity plans to tackle persistent government deficit

Earlier today, Sweden's finances minister Signilda Gutrsdottir announced that the 2010 budget deficit was set to reach some 3,36% of the GDP - or $14,5 billion, down from last year's figure of 4,55%. Although it seems that the government's austerity programmes the past five years have brought results, opposition argues they were not drastic enough and failed to close the black hole in Swedish public finances that opened in 2002 and has been persisting ever since. Although hardly crippling, and public debt remains at an average 42% of the GDP, Sweden does not compare favourably with its western and southern neighbours in the field, or even communist Finland.

Sweden's public finances are burdened by a relatively high defence budget that, although arguably more justified than the equivalent figures in Denmark or Finland, are nevertheless seriously hurting the budget. Now, Sweden's government promises to take new action for 2011, with surplus military bases also set to shut down. The deficit has finally reached a focal point, as the Royal Armed Forces will now have to make cuts of their own, even if the Defence Ministry states it will not compromise Sweden's security.

Sandwiched between an aggressive Finland and a heavily armed Denmark-Norway, Sweden has long been forced to maintain considerable armed forces of its own. Although it is an ally of Denmark and Norway through the Nordic Defence Council, it is nevertheless expected to maintain a similar force as a matter of national pride and its closer proximity to the South Finnish communist state, which dominates parts of northern Russia, southern Finland, and the entirety of Estonia. At some 35 million people, Finland by far outnumbers its Nordic Defence Council neighbours even when combined.

Other measures promised by the government include further efficiency in the government and its agencies, including the armed forces. Administrative costs are set to go down, whereas the government also plans to allocate a considerable portion of its budget to encourage exports and further develop the economy. It is hoped that the budget deficit will also close from the expected return in value-added tax, trade tariffs, as well as profitable commercial relations between Sweden and its major trade partners.

Deficit 'owed to support packages' says MS
Moderate Party accuses leading Social Democrat-backed economic stimuli for the deficit

Fredrik Reinfeldt, chairman of the Moderate Party and leader of the party's team in the Riksdag, has accused the leading Social Democratic party of causing the ongoing deficit thanks to its continued economic stimulus packages. The $14 billion deficit this year comes after continued government support, and carrying on the stimulus packages longer than needed. These packages were introduced during and immediately after the 2002-2003 financial crisis, which threatened many prominent Swedish companies with bankruptcy.

"By no means do I suggest to eliminate the stimuli, but they have to be cut back. Our economy no longer needs a multi-billion support package to stay afloat. While beneficial for companies, this increases public debt continuously. Currently it is up to 42% and rising - if this goes unchecked, it might exceed 50% and 60% a few years from now. We need to start paying the money back, rather than keep borrowing from abroad" spoke Fredrik Reinfeldt. Several opposition parties agreed with the Moderates, and are now pressuring the leading SDA-MPG coalition to cut back on unneeded expenditure.

The government was largely unable to reach for comments, but Finance Minister Signilda Gutrsdottir stated that "the austerity measures planned for late 2010 and early 2011 will take everything into account, including the economic stimulus packages that might no longer be needed." The move is not expected to seriously hurt Swedish trade interests, in light of a recent increase of exports to Norway, Denmark and Cenotopia.

Scandinavian War Woes: Finlands decided to battle it out
Nordic Council heads of government to meet this Friday in Stockholm

There have always been two Finlands as far as most Swedes remember today - and they recently decided to battle out their differences. Oh woe! The massive military conflict brewing in Finland, soon to be spilled all over Scandinavia, will be the first major military conflict in the area in decades, something that has alarmed the Nordic Council (consisting of Denmark, Norway and Sweden) - itself a cooperation organisation among the three Scandinavian kingdoms.

With the North Finnish capital under naval siege and the skies of South Finland full of northern predator-fighters, Sweden finds itself in a very uncomfortable position: to the south, Straits are now swarming with Danish naval activity in response to the chaos in Finland, while in the east the massive communist war machine begins to pose a direct threat to Sweden's borders and, perhaps, very survival. To make matters worse, there are reports of movements in the Dano-Norwegian 4th Army, based in Hammerfast - the army assigned to watch the Norwegian-Finnish and parts of the Norwegian-Swedish borders.

What will be key in understanding how quickly the fires of war may or may not spread, will be the decision of the Nordic Council heads of state this weekend in Stockholm. Already criticised for a 'laggy response' to the conflict, Sweden's government (not alone in this, but joined by the rest of the international community) now has to face the difficult decision on how to act in response to the chaos to the country's east. One thing is certain: the happy days for the Social Democrats are long over, with a budget deficit and the war in Finland undermining its rule.

Hanseatic Financial Crisis: Stockholm to propose bailout?
Danzig goes bankrupt as Swedish trade and bank interests face looming threats

The Hanseatic League faces collapse in the horizon as its economy is buckling, with the world and especially Sweden severely concerned. Sweden and the League have long had positive neighbourly relations despite the "grey" status of the League-controlled Swedish territory in southern Sweden and the Baltic, traditionally a big thorn in the relations of the two countries. The Royal Government in Stockholm, however, seems to be watching both panels of the Great Game in the Scandinavian region with great interest.

Talks of a Swedish bailout of Danzig are constant despite the great expenditure that this might mean. Amidst a financial deficit in government spending this will be a controversial move, though diplomatic sources suggest a heavy backdoor political game in the area. Italy is also proposing a bailout, though this case will be a very special one as many Swedish companies are beginning to feel losses and insecurity as their strong financial interests in the Hanseatic League are at stake. Ethnic Swedes in the League are also feeling the weight of the crisis on their shoulders, with pro-Swedish secessionist movements reportedly growing.

Austria divided as Linz vies for protector
Communist Linz and capitalist Vienna struggle for control over the remnants of Austria

This week held a most unpleasant surprise for Vienna, which struggles to become Europe's largest and most ruthless casino, as well as the nearby Cenotopia and Northern Italy, as the City of Linz proclaimed itself to come under the wings of a socialist government under the Communist Party of Austria. This is yet another internal division in Europe's most renowned failed state, Austria, which has been in a state of chaos and anarchy for considerable time.

The "Free Socialist City of Linz" has already been recognised as sovereign by several countries, unsurprisingly including the Basque Country and Finland, while the right wing of Europe's political spectrum has thus far withheld recognition. On the other camp lie Cenotopia, Vienna and North Italy, which universally lay the claim that Vienna should succeed Austria and unite it (by force, probably). Copenhagen has, thus far stood right in the middle: although Denmark-Norway doesn't recognise the new regime, it recognises Linz as independent.

Linz is now looking for a protector, some muscle to keep it alive if you will - surrounded by hostile powers, it is turning its eyes on friendly regimes like the Basque Republic and the Democratic Republic of Finland. At the same time, Stockholm is sitting uselessly, doing little but reinforcing its military deployments and sitting out of valuable Nordic Council talks in Reykjavik, which allows Copenhagen to once more dominate Scandinavian politics.

It seems that Mr. Halestrom is too occupied with cutting the budget deficit to zero and putting up toy soldiers on the Swedish map right next to Finland, as opposed to actually undertaking an active stand in the Austrian and Greenlandic matters. Perhaps Communism needs to knock on Sweden's very own door for a second time, for the government to actually do something decisive?

Defence ministry raises alert level amidst Austria crisis
The Ministry for Defence has raised alert status to 'Orange' following international threats of war over Austria

As though Gutrsdottir's hopes to tackle the budget deficit are not meant to be this easily, international tensions centred in Austria now threaten to put a dent on Sweden's 2011 budget as well. The Swedish government is running on a fiscal deficit for the first time in 20 years following 2009's financial injections to stabilise the internal market.

Finnish communists, already having seized control of Finland from its legitimate government and now ruling Russian Karelia and Estonia with an iron fist, are now threatening to seize control of Austria through the independent city of Linz, which recently restored order in its borders. Northern Italy has responded, and war seems increasingly likely unless the two states settle their dispute.

In 2010, government expenditures amounted to $411,4 billion, running a $14,5 billion fiscal deficit. The deficit, which drains what might otherwise have been a surplus, mostly accounts for repayment of loans taken during 2009. The bulk of these loans, set to finish being paid off in 2011, are nevertheless threatening to destabilise government budgets on the long term.

For 2011, the government has announced various cuts to accommodate the final loan payments.

Swedish troops deploy around Linz
The first personnel of a 6.000 strong mission arrive in Austria amidst efforts to stabilise the country and avert war

The first elements of two Swedish army rapid-reaction regiments touched down in the local airport of Wels in Upper Austria at 7.30 am this morning, marking the beginning of Swedish contributions to international peace-keeping efforts in Austria. The country, divided in two unruly and extremist city states with long lasting feuds and an abandoned rural territory, has been in a state of relative anarchy since the 2008 collapse of the federal government in Vienna.

Sweden's 6.000-strong contribution comes second following Denmark-Norway's rapid dispatch of 3.000 troops in Styria, with a pledge for 3.000 more for the state of Salzburg. The Mediterranean Commonwealth, and recently Germany, have similarly pledged peace-keeping forces to join the Danish-led mission headquartered in Graz, with the first such troops arriving later today. Vienna and Linz have universally recognised the authority of the peace-keepers outside their city limits.

"Our men are going to maintain law and order in Upper Austria and around Linz" commented Minister of State Erik Halestrom in a press conference this morning. "We are going to assume regional command in Upper Austria under Danish-Norwegian central command, replace allied troops on the limits of Linz, and quarantine the city from violence and armed visitors. In addition, we will begin cooperating with local forces surviving the Austrian collapse."

At first, Austria's eight statutory states maintained some order, but before long the situation devolved into chaos as gangs eventually exploited the lack of central authority and took over. The state of Upper Austria, where Swedish troops will be deployed into, was in a state of disarray until its capital city Linz was reorganised by local Communist committees which subsequently invited Finnish occupation forces.

Today, much of Austria remains in the hand of remnants of the Austrian Army and the Landwehr, with some police units joining them. Graz was a peculiar such example, with much of the city still flying Austrian and Styrian flags when the peace-keeping forces arrived. Local forces have now joined the peace-keeping efforts and will help establish a transitional pan-Austrian authority, as Sweden is on the lookout for such factions to ally with in Upper Austria.

Baltic bank crash to threaten Scandinavia?
After peace-keeping in Austria and tensions in the Mediterranean and Russia, it is the Hansa's turn to go foul

It has not been long since the Nordic Council terminated its presence in Austria; and indeed not long since the Mediterranean, Russia and Austria were hot spots of international policies often revolving around the idea of obtaining colony- or protectorate-like powers abroad. The serious blows to the global financial system have now taken incredible toll on the Hanseatic League, which continues to occupy considerable Russian, Polish and Swedish territory.

With the Hanseatic League collapsing both economically as well as, now, politically, the end of the Hanseatic League as an economic power in the Baltic is probably near. Popular movements reminiscing of the fascistoid and monarchist tendencies of a century or so ago, give or take two decades, collapsing stock markets and social unrest may be expanded into Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia if careful movements are not undertaken by Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo, and possibly even Helsinki.

Stockholm has appeared particularly swift in its responses, the government taking measures to separate Sweden from the collapsing Baltic hegemony of the Hansa; and amidst historical tensions over the occupation of Swedish territory (including Gotland, Öland and parts of Småland) there are worries as to how far might matters escalate.

Hansa riots cause union rift
Königsberg secedes, Swedish Hansa territory risking Scandinavian stability

Following violent riots and the sudden secession of Königsberg (Kaliningrad) from the Hansa, tensions have continued mounting across the Baltic city-state confederacy. In other major cities of the Hanseatic League, police and extremist groups, many of whom belonging to the far right and far left scenes, have continued steady clashes that are tearing the Baltic state asunder. Tensions spilling over to the Swedish mainland, as well as the Hansa's inability to maintain its claimed frontiers, have sparked major concern in Stockholm, as well as territories on the border between the former Hanseatic control in Sweden.

Minister of State Erik Halestrom has officially authorised the military to proceed and restore order in the Swedish mainland and Baltic islands previously held illegally by the Hansa. High readiness elements of the 2nd and 4th Army as well as the Royal Navy have thus proceeded to enter territory under disorder. These units include the 706th and 707th Mechanised regiments for coastal territory, and the 102nd (Airborne) and 106th (Marine) Special Operations regiments for the islands of Oland, Gotland, and other Swedish island territory under Hanseatic claim.

According to the reports from the defence ministry the armed forces are preparing a large scale operation to proceed with the restoration of order in Hanseatic-occupied Swedish territory, as well as containing tensions on the southern coasts of the Baltic. Air force and naval patrols have been reportedly increased throughout the Baltic, while elements of the Royal Navy will isolate the Scandinavian territories of the Hansa to prevent further escalation of the situation from extremists of contingents from the Polish mainland.

Halestrom: 'Public order must be protected'
Army enters Swedish Hansa, seizes Oland, Gotland, Islands, mainland

Following the deployment of Army and Navy high readiness elements in the Swedish Hansa to restore public order and prevent fallout to free Swedish territory, the Riksdag officially authorised a higher-profile military deployment in the area. The deployment, which concerns another three regiments of the 2nd Army, will bring the total Swedish forces in the area up to 21.000 troops.

The Hansa has been in a state of disintegration since Kaliningrad formally seceded from the union. The collapsing economy and public order prompted Stockholm to reassert its historic claim to renegade territory that illegally acceded to the Hansa during the economic crisis in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The Riksdag has formally authorised the reincorporation of the provinces by the government, demanding a timeframe for the restoration of order and withdrawal of extraordinary military forces.

In the meanwhile, naval forces have increased patrols in the Baltic in conjunction with allied naval forces to deter possible piracy and illegal immigration from the southern elements of the Hansa. In the meanwhile, police forces and aid are expected to enter the formerly Hansa-occupied Sweden the coming days, with private donors including the King and several prominent businesses.

Pirates capture ship in E. Mediterranean
$50 mil ransom demanded for the Gotland and her crew of 20

The Norwegian-flagged, Swedish-owned supertanker Gotland and its crew of 20 (10 of whom are Swedish, 5 Norwegians, 4 Italians and 1 Dane) have been allegedly captured by pirates some 70 nm off the south-eastern coast of Crete in the Eastern Mediterranean. The supertanker was loaded with oil from Cyprus and sailing back to the Baltic Sea.

Ransom demands posted by the pirates amount for $50 million, according to the ship's owners. The ship is believed to have been hauled by the pirates to Egypt, though the state of health of the crew is not known at present. The Swedish government has condemned the attack and requested the assistance of Norway and the Mediterranean Commonwealth in the matter, announcing it will dispatch the corvette HMS Helsingborg to the area.

Minister of State Erik Halestrom stated that Sweden will pursue full cooperation with the Kingdom of Norway and the Mediterranean Commonwealth on the matter, as well as Denmark due to its control of the Gibraltar peninsula. The HMS Helsingborg is expected to arrive in the Mediterranean in a matter of 14 days. According to Mr. Halestrom, the ship's absence does not weaken the defence of the country among tensions in the Baltic.

Piracy, which is a strong issue in the Mediterranean since the global financial collapse, is a menacing problem for maritime trade in the region. Despite efforts to curtail it, areas such as the Barbary Coast, Malta and the Sinai peninsula remain safe havens for pirates, with the latter including most recent reported attacks despite Danish and Mediterranean efforts to curtail the issue.
