![]() The Large, sprawling building that was once the Headquarters for the Nation's Ministry of Foreign Affairs was somewhat diminished by years of neglect and stagnant decay. The Utopianism of the Malmhaug Provo had saught to build a new, retro-futuristic site for this purpose within the area it had designated 'New Stockholm'. It, like all the grand projects begun by the FMP, had never been finished. Rusting, abandoned building sites just like it straddle the cityscapes across Southern Sweden, faded monuments to a Bright Dream, denied. Its visionaries dead, imprisoned, exiled. But the stain of the FMP was nowhere to be found in this building. Though it was old, faded, dust covering surfaces and filled with empty offices, winding echoing corridors that seemed to creak with the howling wind from outside, it had a warm, cosy core, and life was slowly returning to this long abandoned centre. With no real Embassies as yet re-established, the Foreign Ministry runs out of the Lobby and First Floor of the Building, with only the Top Floor Conference Rooms and the elevators having been refurbished otherwise, although efforts to ressurrect this government institution are ongoing. Diplomats and Envoys from abroad are welcomed into the Lobby by a team of attractive secretaries and genial security, who politely frisk and scan all those incoming for weapons, a gentle reminder that the KU is not without its enemies. There they are led to the Private Elevator, which takes them through the musting bowels of the building, straight to its airy and mahogany-varnished top, where a commanding view of the surrounding area can be had, and refreshments enjoyed from a small cafeteria area. Led directly to the Conference Room, any visitors will often be suprised to see they are greeted by the sight of a mound of paperwork dominating one end of the long varnished table that they are to sit at. It seems that the Foreign Minister is too busy to return to his Office, and conducts his business directly from the head of this Table, pausing only infrequently for rest and refreshment. The Foreign Minister Petter Tornquist is an affable, slightly overweight man of late middle age, wearing an often creased grey business suit. The man is the closest thing the Halestrom Administration has to a foreign affairs expert, and is well versed in the world of diplomatic and legal protocol. He speaks English, Russian and German with equal ease and fluence, and is also apparently learning Spanish. "Good day. Would you like a drink?" he asks, rising from his large reclining chair, which seems out of place in this otherwise typical office enviroment. |

Maj. Diana O'Hare had been an American Continental Army foreign interpreter since college when she had first heard the call for National Service and incorporated her linguistics degree into the Union Armed Forces Post-Secondary Education Program. Though she had no experience in Europe, she had proven useful in outreach and co-operation with various small Mexican communities in the area around Mexicali and Tijuana in the fight against the private armies of various drug lords on the frontiers of the State of South California. Her natural knack for diplomacy with local militia had not gone unnoticed at the Pentagon and in Washington. So they posted her as a diplomat in the latest effort to incorporate more military personnel into the American government. Naturally, she fidgeted in her dress uniform after a decade of wearing nothing quite as formal or intimidating, nothing but field gear. This was her first posting to a foreign country and though she had a passing familiarity with Swedish, given some of her college backpacking trips in Europe, it now became clear to her that after her headstrong determination waned, she was way out of her league. These were actual men of government, what the hell was she doing here? What Washington bureaucrat's dumb idea was this? There was certainly a need for more interpreters in the field. Nevertheless, she was here in Stockholm and readjusting to the comforts of civilization once again was definitely an assignment Maj. O'Hare had no business complaining about. Before her was an aged officious-looking businessman who was probably a tad intimidated by her militaristic uniform, it dawned on Diana that while displaying an image of power to the world was definitely important, requiring her to wear a full uniform during amiable diplomacy had to be a bit crazy, almost giving the impression that America had transformed into some kind of military dictatorship in her absence from European affairs. Still, this diplomat seemed unphased so far. "Uhh, yes. Yes, just some water will be fine. I'm here, Mr. Tornquist, to extend America's blessings on your newly-united Scandinavia and to express our desire to have the privilege of being the first nation to recognize the Kalmar Union fully." |

Tornquist appraised the fully-uniformed, somewhat severe-looking woman in front of him with a practiced eye, his mind wheeling with a thousand thoughts and calculations. Automatically, whilst he was still processing and translating her words in his head, he got up out of his chair and went to a nearby water-cooler, filling two plastic cups with clear mineral water. "I'm afraid things are a little informal around here, and may not be the more...traditional style of doing things you may be used to in other European Nations." he said apologetically in an English with a Trans-atlantic accent, unaware of this young woman's background as being new herself to the Foreign Relations Game. In truth, it was not entirely just a matter of national infancy that shaped the informal and untraditional surroundings, but also a way of off-footing more hidebound and traditionalist diplomatic envoys. "I'm pleased to hear it." he beamed widely, extending his hand in friendship. "Our Nation is, as I'm sure your aware, much like your own- a tabula rasa, a slate swept clean by the failings and warrings of archaic powers with vainglorious dreams." He said, with sudden passion, before slipping back into his genial affability. "I can tell you that our Prime Minister is something of a fan of the United States. In fact, I believe he learned english listening to old speeches by your Presidents!" he laughed jovially, easing himself back into his recliner. chair. "But now, to Business. As Grateful as we are to be recognized by the Continental Union, particularly at this fractious time, I must ask how soon a guaranteed American presence can be established here in Scandinavia. We have a number of empty embassies and similar premises ready and available for use, and the sooner they are filled, the better." he smiled with genuine enthusiasm. "One other thing- You may be pleased to know that even as we speak a small delegation from the Union has been dispatched to petition for re-entry, such as it is, into NATO." He rummaged through his papers. "Is there anything else I can help you with, miss...Major, sorry, O'Hare?" he said. "If you want I could probably print off Accreditation Papers for you in an hour or so. Have you had our Swedish Pastries yet? they're really quite delicious." |

OOC: I've created a subforum for the Kalmar Union in the Nations forum. You can put every thread related to your nation in this forum (everything from factbooks to diplomatic threads). This should help keep the major/important threads for your nation in a readily accessible place. Viscount Harold Fisher was one of the Empire's more adept diplomats. Fisher had come to fame within the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for negotiating the peaceful integration of Northern France into the United Kingdom, and had been instrumental in pushing Parliament to offer direct representation for both Northern France and Ireland within the House of Commons. The FCO did not believe that they needed to send a man of such caliber to deal with Scandinavia. Any diplomat could represent the interests of the British Empire at the court of another nation. However, the UN Secretary-General, Jaskson Reese, himself a British citizen, had personally requested that Fisher be sent. After the failure of UNSC Resolutions 001 and 001-A, Reese needed someone to go to Scandinavia and assess the situation. No one was better qualified than Fisher. Thus, on the morning of the 4th of December, Viscount Fisher's government jet touched down at Stockholm's international airport. As he stepped off the plane, the very first thing he noticed was the extensive damage to the airport's terminal facilities. The reports that there was "nothing going on" in the FMP were clearly false. Something terrible was happening in the country. Stockholm didn't look much better as he was driven to the Foreign Ministry building. Dilapidated buildings, abandoned construction sites, and multiple burned-old buildings gave indications of the total collapse of the FMP. Fisher was concerned, and it showed when he was finally introduced to the Foreign Minister Tornquist, and, incidentally, to the new American ambassador. He shook hands with the both of them, and politely requested a small cup of tea. "Minister Tornquist," Fisher said. "The British Empire takes care of its friends. The FMP were our friends, and as you are their successors, you are our friend as well. It seems something terrible has happened here. What can we do to help?" Fisher smiled. Tornquist expertly refrained from commenting about the FMP. It was true that the British Empire had been their friends, and that rankled, but he was too much of a consummate professional to allow that to in any way bother him or interfere with the very serious Business of restoring this nation. Still, he mentally filed away the patronizing comment, for later reflection. "Thank you for your kind words, your Lordship. I regret that our surroundings are not too the standards expected of formal European embassies, but I am pleased that an August personnage such as yourself would choose to visit us." he said smoothly, consciously aware of the vital importance of securing British support. America was one thing, a friend and soulmate. But the Empire was in Europe, and had real muscle, and was cool towards Tomania. "Your offer is greatly appreciated. At this moment what we need is, to put it simply, money. We have more or less everything the FMP left behind, but we lack the funds to hire the manpower and accquire the materiel needed to put it all back together again under our auspices. The Provos took most of our gold reserves with them when they blew into exile for a life of obscene luxury, and their criminal enterprises continue unchecked in Finland. A Loan from His Majesty's Government would be greatly appreciated." Tornquist's amiable manner was somewhat blunted by the crassness and urgency of his request. But his nation could not afford the luxury of proud subtlety in edging towards this. It had to be declared, boldly. "In addition, your visible diplomatic presence here would be of Great comfort to us. We have set aside one of our best Embassies for your use, and we would be most grateful to see a Permanent British Embassy with a Union Jack flying overhead." he smiled, and most carefully did not add, Because it'll give the Tomanian Fascists second thoughts about claiming us aswell. All of this was said in a rapid but precise manner, and Fisher had barely had a chance to sit down before Tornquist had laid things out. Taking a pause for breath, Tornquist motioned to his staff, who brought in a chrome tea trolley with an assortment of biscuits and a gleaming metal teapot. "Would you care for refreshments, Your Lordship? We have some excellent pastries, or something stronger could be brought here if you prefer..." he said, winking unsubtly. |

Somebody's desperate, Fisher thought as he bit into one of the pastries offered him by Minister Tornquists staff. "That's awfully delicious!" he said, as the influx of taste was enough to briefly distract him from his mission. "Who makes these? I think I see a trade agreement in our future," he said, only half-joking. They were that good. He quickly finished, and returned to the matter at hand. "His Majesty's Government would be perfectly willing to assist," Fisher said, crossing his legs. "But, first I must know: what happened here? No one outside of Scandinavia knows what's been going on up here. The Empire would like some kind of assurance that the Kalmar Union is the rightful and legitimate government of Scandinavia." He paused for a moment, trying to think of the right words to finish what might otherwise be found as a mildly insulting charge. "You understand why I ask, yes?" |

Tornquist smiled and waved his hands in the air, trying to brush away the Viscount's concerns with a jovial tone. "Ah, they are made by a local Corporation, Lindsborg Emporium I believe. They are my favourites aswell- made according to traditional recipes using the finest ingredients." He nonchatantly fished out some papers from the stacks that surrounded his chair and constituted his 'office'. "As to our Legitimacy and Origins...It is regrettable that we have as yet no internationally recognizable democratic mandate from the People, but I assure you that Elections for Parliament and, should the People wish it, Presidency, will be held by the Summer of Next Year." he said this quickly, brushing past the uncomfortable implications. "However, we are no millitary junta, seizing power in violent battle. The Malmhaug Provo collapsed from its own excesses. The Nationalists and Communists and Utopianists tore this country apart in months of their own fraticidal mania, but at the end of it noone had sufficient power or popularity to hold the hearts. So they fled, with what ill-gotten gains they could, and thats when Halestrom came to us, and said, enough is enough." He brightened visibly at the end, a cloud having temporarily come over his normally sunny disposition, remembering the Chaos. "It may please the British Empire to know that, whilst we lack a democratic mandate, we do posess a royal one- the President has been in talks with the Swedish and Norwegian Royal Families, and has succeeded in gaining the Vaasa stamp of approval. It is his hope that a Crown Union might be achievable somewhere down the road, but for now we are content to have the popular support in the form of Publicly-traded Corporations and the King." Tornquist passed the papers he had been holding to Fisher, confirming the endorsement of the Swedish King of Halestrom as being called to be His First Minister and to Form a Government. Tornquist grinned, and quickly moved the conversation on. "Perhaps your BBC would like a Tour of the Union, get some exposure in here, yes? Im afraid theres not much to see right now, but come back in six months, and bam! Great things." he said with evident confidence and sincerity. |

Fisher pulled out his Blackberry and made note of "Lindsborg Emporium." He looked up and smiled at Tornquist. "Would it possible to have these gentleman cater to the British Embassy in Stockholm?" he asked, well aware that he had effectively just officially recognized the Kalmar Union as a sovereign state. He then took a moment to glance over the papers Tornquist handed him. They appeared official enough, though ultimately Fisher couldn't verify them on his own. But, he had faith in Tornquist and the Kalmar Union. "Minister Tornquist, what I have heard from you pleases me greatly. I believe there is a future between the Kalmar Union and the British Empire. And I dare say it looks rather bright." He smiled once more. "I believe the best way to kick off this new relationship would be to have our respective royal families meet. His Majesty, King Richard IV (quick OOC note: we've got a storyline about a world collapse of sorts following the breakup of the Soviet Union that helps to explain the current nature of our RP world. We've been roughly following it, though it's not official and isn't binding. It's just a story that fits. In the case of the British Empire, Queen Elizabeth II, along with the rest of the British royal family, was killed - god forbid - in a popular uprising. Now I've got a pretender on the throne, of which I'm debating whether or not to have related to the Stuarts) would be very much interested in meeting his counterpart. The BBS would love to cover such an occasion, and it could be used to discuss exactly how much aid the British Empire can provide to the Kalmar Union." Fisher smiled. Tornquist smiled with genuine relief at these words. He knew now that he had the British Empire precisely where he wanted them- namely, in a fortified embassy in the heart of his nation's Capital, where their flag and imperial presence could make itself known, ensuring that the Tomanians would not try anything fishy anytime soon. "I shall see what I can arrange, your Lordship." he said, grinning and offering his hand. "I am sure His Highness would be...pleased to meet with your own King, and exchange pleasentries for your BBS." he paused only for the briefest of moments, wondering if in fact the King would want to meet the Bloody Usurper of Britain, but having committed himself to it, he knew he'd find a way. Besides, any king savvy enough to back a man like Halestrom would have to be savvy enough to make nice with the Ruler of the British Empire, no matter how..unsavoury that origin might be. It wasnt exactly like the Union could afford to be picky these days, anyway. "In the meantime, Let one of our staff members escort you to your Hotel. Having come all this way to Sweden, i am sure you will want to sample our national delights before returning. If you have need of anything at all, simply talk to one of our accompanying aides, and they will do their best to make you as comfortable as possible." he said with well rehearsed ease. |

Fisher gave a slight bow as he rose from his seat. "Minister Tornquist, as the Empire's representative, I do very much look forward to our future dealings. Now if you will excuse me, I must send my report to the FCO so that they can make the necessary arrangements for the establishment of a British embassy in Stockholm, and to have prepared a Kalmar embassy in London should you wish it." |
