Sadly we've become poisoned by 'this side up' with star trek and other sci fi movies/series. Up can be any direction in space and down usually is in relation to the direction the ship is currently 'thrusting'. The Nth'Ch do not have 'gravety generators' nor 'inertial dampeners' so there is no real 'up' unless the ship is thrusting (then up is twords the front of the ship). Hell their carriers have the smaller craft all over the hull (think a bee swarm for launch capabilities) |

I know the larger ships in Mass Effect have their decks arranged perpendicular to the thrust of the ship. So, even though they retain the traditional long and slender form of starships, functionality-wise they are really more like skyscrapers laid on their sides. |

If you think about it that makes sence Nuke. A ship in free fall has zero gravity. One with a 1 G accelleration would be like standing in a normal building. Higher G's would add to your weight. Nth'ch ships have a max acceleration of 6G's so they don't crush the inhabitants. Unmanned probes have a higher acceleration. I did read an interesting book using dence star mass for a ship to travel at really high G's Engines were on the dence mass with a long tower extending behind it. The faster the ship accelerated the closer the capsule moved to the dense mass thus always keeping it at a 1G twords the dense mass. (in free flight the capsule would be at the far end of the tower, at 100G acceleration it would be very close to the star mass). |
