And there goes all hope for the six party talks and any chance at negotiating with Pyongyang. |

Can we just finally end the Korean War already? I'm sure we'll be in Pyongyang by sundown. Plus the tens of thousands of troops stationed there can finally come home. |

Aint that easy, mate. North Korea has enough firepower to cause a nightmare at the US and ROK troops in the peninsula without even moving from its positions. Sure they have old stuff, but don't underestimate them because they don't follow NATO doctrines. |

China stated it would never assist the DPRK back when they fired the ballistic missile and Russia currently, despite the return of some Soviet-era programs under Putin, is not in an alliance with the DPRK and is not the USSR anymore. As much as it may shock people, Russia is not out to oppose all US actions currently and there are even points of agreement between American and Russian policy. It's a whole different diplomatic situation than the Cold War. As for DPRK military equipment, that would be true for conventional land combat but the United Nations force in Korea (mostly the United States and the ROK) has a severely greater intelligence and aerial superiority compared to North Korea and any potential problem spots with DPRK land-based firepower is and has been in the sights of cruise missiles and strike aircraft for years now. That being said, a more covert or diplomatic way of ending the DPRK would be more advisable and, in the event of war, the cleanup should be left to the ROK. |

I know that USA has air superiority. So do the North Koreans, however. If you really think that getting rid of such a paranoid, militaristic, totalitarian regime is going to be a piece of cake you're quite mistaken. It's the most secretive state in the world and well beyond the Soviet Union's own "secrecy madness." Believe me at that. As of unwarranted aggression, such as making war over a "simple" ballistic missile test, it would overturn international denial of saying anything. You need a proper casus belli to go to war irl, unlike in Nationstates. |

Looks like North Korea has restarted a plant that makes bomb-grade plutonium as well as fired off a third short-range missile. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090527/ts_nm/us_korea_north Edited by Evil, May 27 2009, 02:41 AM.

I'm on both sides with this. I think it is absolutely stupid that everytime someone wants nuclear weapons, we get pissy about it. Hell, why don't we disband all our stuff and set an example? I know we won't do it, which is the problem. America is powerful in a lot of areas. All North Korea has is nuclear weapons, same with Pakistan. I mean, that is their equal footing. Personally I don't think North Korea would attack anyone. They remind me of that kid on the block who always gets picked on, but then steals his daddy's gun from the closet and walks around talking smack, but if he had to pull the trigger he wouldn't do it. The more we come off as "OH NOES! U NOT GONNA HAVE NUKES!!!", the more other nations say, "We better get us some nukes BEFORE they come down on us!", which only makes the problem more difficult. |

The US certainly won't go to war of its own accord, not with our current obligations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Quite simply, we can't handle a three-front war. We'll wait for the North Koreans to attack (which is a possibility), at which point in time we'll probably end up in more of a support role (using the Air Force and Navy to support the South Koreans, who would be doing the majority of the fighting) than a central one. Most likely, we'll just severe all of their economic activities with the outside world and either starve them into submission, or starve them into attacking the South. |

If we starve them into attacking the South, that wouldn't make us look good. North Korea, if it is as weak as everyone says it is economically, will eventually collapse like the Soviet Union. Most nations that practice a Stalinist government tend to break apart anyway, and I suspect the same will happen with them. I suspect if North Korea did attack, it would become a NATO thing. It'd be the Korean War II, basically (or still the Korean War if you want to be technical). I still don't think North Korea will attack anyone intentionally, this is more or less to show the people they are strong and independent. |

North Korea is not Stalinist, it follows Juche. Stalinism is utopic by comparison to this paranoia they got up there. |

The last Soviet Premier (who ever he was) really wasn't Stalinist, he was accautly a pro-democratic-ish kind of person. Still, if Russia sides with the DPRK, the Russia can enjoy crippling the EU buy shutting down the gas pipelines. And China can destroy the United States economy. |

These actions are double-edged knives you know. Causing economic damage also means taking economic damage in return, when it comes down to breaking trade relations. Besides, I cannot see why would Russia or China would go that radical any time soon. They wouldn't even in the 1960's. |

North Korea Threatens Attack on South TOKYO, May 27 -- North Korea vowed Wednesday to attack South Korea if its ships are searched as part a U.S.-led effort to interdict vessels carrying missiles or weapons of mass destruction. It also declared that the truce that ended the Korean War was no longer valid. "Those who provoke [North Korea] once will not be able to escape its unimaginable and merciless punishment," the North's official news agency said. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/27/AR2009052701060.html?hpid=topnews Lots of big talk. I don't think they'd back it up. |

Gorbachev. Yeah, I know. But the harsh practices before only made his reforms turn out like that. As for it not being Stalinist and being Juche, they're both going to fail because people are idiots and consumed by greed. It may take a while for water to boil, but it will eventually and then it'll explode. North Korea will experience some kind of turmoil, I'm fairly sure. As for North Korea's 'threat'. That is exactly the stuff I'm talking about. It gets people all riled up, North Korea gets to stroke their ego, and everybody winds up looking like a jack ass in the end. |
