BERLIN – Retired Ohio auto worker John Demjanjuk was charged Wednesday with 29,000 counts of acting as an accessory to murder while working as a guard at a Nazi death camp in occupied Poland. The arrest warrant could move the 30-year global legal battle over his fate closer to conclusion.

The warrant by a Munich court seeks the deportation or extradition of Demjanjuk, who lives in a Cleveland suburb and denies involvement in the deaths at Sobibor. His family says he is too sick to travel.

The U.S. Justice Department says Demjanjuk, 88, was a Nazi guard and can be deported for falsifying information on his entry and citizenship applications in the 1950s.

I heard about this before.

Those people should leave that old man alone, because the Holocaust is history now.

No, we can't let someone get away with a crime like that.

Hey, the "following orders" defense worked for his superiors at the Nuremburg trials, why doesn't it work for him, a lowly camp guard?

Yes we can.

Like I said, Ancient History, they should have got him alot sooner. And considering that this guy is near death, its pointless.

no kidding, he is 88 years old now, i doubt they could really even charge him with anything and find him guilty, at that age he is way too old to defend himself, so they really have no case. leave him alone and let him finish his life in peace

So we just let someone who holds partial responsibility for the deaths of 29,000 people to simply walk away? That's a nice precedent you're creating there.

I try my best at times ;)

But in the end result, you are only getting a 88 year old man, who is near death, that is getting tried for something that happened decades ago. Becides, its just suits looking for easy money.

Here's my problem with the whole thing.

If he is sorry for what he's done, that should be punishment enough. If he is not, and you lock him up, all you're doing is wasting resources and space. At 88 years old there isn't anyone he's going to be hurting, except maybe his local pharmacist. A lot of this is people wanting to punish him as a way of feeling better about what happened, but it's only temporary. You want to feel better? Stop that nonsense in Darfur or prevent another Holocaust from happening, and leave the tax payer's dollars alone.
