R.I.P. Yu-Gi-Oh! UPPER DECK FORCED TO DISCONTINUE SUPPORT - Courts rule against interests of Yu-Gi-Oh! community "North Las Vegas, NV (February 26, 2009) — Throughout this uncertain time for the Yu-Gi-Oh! players and retailers, Upper Deck has continued in good faith to support the community of which it has been an integral part for six years. Despite having no new product since December of 2008, Upper Deck has continued to ship league kits to hobby stores, run top level Organized Play events, such as Shonen Jump Championships and Regional Championships, without interruption for as long as possible and at great expense over the last three months. Unfortunately, Konami has continued to disregard the needs of the Yu-Gi-Oh! community and the court has placed a temporary injunction against us on all Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME products. This ruling will immediately affect all support for Yu-Gi-Oh! online and through Upper Deck’s proprietary Mantis tournament software. In addition, the cancellation of Upper Deck sponsored Organized Play, which it hoped would be temporary, is now permanent. We do not feel that this course of action is in the best interest of the players and regret that the absence of Upper Deck support will leave such a large void in the Yu-Gi-Oh! community. As Upper Deck moves forward with this transition, we will always keep our customers’ needs in mind. To find out more about our exceptional products and exciting Organized Play opportunities for all of our great games, please visit www.UDE.com." This sucks, looks like the game is dead. Konami is no longer supporting yugioh, and now Upper Deck can't either. We won't see any new products and won't have any official and or sponsored tournaments. No new cards, no new strategies. Theres not even an official website anymore. I'm sure any video games in the works are probably being cancelled as well. The only good I can see come out of this, if you can call it good, is a dissolution of an unanimous banned/resricted list. Thus opening the door for more strategies involving the combination of top tier decks. I can just see Dark Armed Dragon being thrown into a Light/Dark Yata-Lock deck and being incredibly brutal to play against. However, in the end this is still very sad news. Yu-Gi-Oh!'s days are numbered. I guess nothing lasts forever. Edit: Ok, I was checking out Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh! website, where I originally saw the Upper Deck news, and I found that the new Banned/Restricted list is up, effective March 1, 2009. http://www.yugioh-card.com/en/limited/ Now I guess Konami's yugioh website is still up, but Upperdeck took theirs down. But without further support from either Konami or Upperdeck, a new banned/restricted list wont matter. I look at it like a sports league with a salary cap. The list is our cap, to keep players under control and not allow the use of too many powerful cards. But when the people who run the league (Konami, Upper Deck) discontinue support of the players, and effectively lock out the players, it becomes back yard ball, and only general rules of the game apply. So at some point, I believe support of the game from the players side will start to shrink as a lack of a banned list and or controversy over the play of certain cards divides players. With no governing body to regulate the game, it becomes anarchic. The game will never be completely gone, but I don't see Yu-Gi-Oh! ever reching near the peak of it's popularity or competitiveness again. Edited by tobiisagoodboy, Mar 2 2009, 12:18 AM.

Yu-Gi-Oh! will never be completely dead. I'm sure there are still people that play the original Dragonball Z card battle game, or even the Zatch Bell card game. But without continued support from the creators and manufacturors of the game, new fans will not be pulled in and others will move on to something else. Overall support will fade, but never be completely diminished. I'm disappointed because I would like to see another top tier deck type. Now we're pretty much stuck with the Light and Dark Yata-Lock deck (supported by the heavy hitters Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Benginning and Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End) and a variable Dark deck built around Dark Armed Dragon. There may be some other OTK decks that can be competitive, but the D.A.D. and Yata-Lock decks have dominated tournaments so much so that their top cards had to be banned or restricted to keep originality and competitive balance in the game. |
