[For some background on Burninandom, see this post.] [See the newly updated political map and geographic map, courtesy of Student Loan Debt, to whom we are forever grateful.] Located atop the highest peaks of the Durkheim Mountains, Burninandom has sat for most of its history in splendid, voluntary isolation. Children of a spacefaring race, Burninites saw no reason to seek the company of the races inhabiting the fair planet of the DSA. See, the Burninites of Burninandom broke away from greater Burnination generations ago to seek settlement in the stars. Essentially, the colony of Burninandom set up an orbital garden over the DSA, which it used for its botanical research and food production. It located its space elevator on a deserted mountain range and took great care to avoid detection by locals. But even advanced civilizations make mistakes. And sometimes, big ones. Big enough to like, lose the orbital space satellite that contains like, everything you eat and all your technology and stuff. See, Burninites didn't really do a long term environmental study of these mountainous peaks before settling there, trusting in the ingenuity and construction of its technology to be good enough for whatever an M-class planet would throw at them. A fatal miscalculation. Long story short, a freak set of circumstances conspired to upend Burninandom and throw it into chaos. Solar flare activity simultaneously knocked out Burninite ground-to-satellite communications and threatened to push the Orbital Garden slightly off its orbit, but of course, it was held in place by the gravweb on the ground. However, simultaneously, the strongest winter storm in the last century slammed into the Durkheim mountains at this precise time, dropping two meters of snow in a mere 6 hours, lowering the temperature to minus 15 centigrade, and producing 100+ km/h winds . All this is unlikely, but the engineering incident that sent the orbital garden careening into space in some random direction is even less likely. A group of burninites was riding up the space elevator at the time the gravweb gave out, which caused unexpected vibrations in the elevator. Burninites panicked, and pressed the emergency stop command. But frozen components below failed to engage just as components above did engage, which caused an imbalance in forces. The computers in the orbital garden got unknown errors as a result of messy communications as a result of the solar flares, and, well... the AI's in the orbital garden assumed that the AI's controlling the gravweb would attempt to stabilize the station via the gravweb, and the AI's controlling the computers on the ground assumed that the AI's in the orbital garden would do so. Not wishing to step on one anothers' toes, they both waited for the other to prevent the oncoming catastrophe, until... The elevator buckled and cracked, and the AI's above were forced to use thrusters to launch the satellite away from the planet to avoid falling to the ground. And as it turns out, whoever was supposed to refuel the fusion cells that day had shirked their duties, meaning that the fate of the orbital garden and the fates of those on the ground were not likely to be intertwined in the future. When communications ground-to-satellite were restored, it was already too late. And Burninites knew it. ============== "Are you sure this will work?" inquired Chairwoman Zhaan, looking at the steel contraption doubtfully. "I am 100%....99% sure this will work," the botanist replied with hesitation. "Look, it's been a long time since I studied mechanics, and, well, it's not like I can access the satellite's stores. Anyway, this should suffice for primitive radio communications." Zhaan glared at the man pointedly. "Without the databases on the Garden, Thorogood, this 'primitive' technology is likely to be all that we can maintain." The botanist's face paled as he considered this. "But Chairwoman, without the Garden..." "We will starve, yes. Unless your radio works." The botanist -- Thorogood -- blinked. "It will work, ma'am. I am sure of it." "Good." Chairwoman Zhaan flicked the 'on' switch. "For anyone receiving this transmission, this is a message from Chairwoman Zhaan of Burninandom. A series of unfortunate events has befallen us, and we find ourselves in dire need of humanitarian assistance. Please respond on this frequency." |

Today in the Port Sakiba Herald: Federal Council announces support for Durkheim transmission investigators, expeditions In an unexpected move, the Alpyrea Federal Council issued a statement this morning offering aid and provisions for those intending to head inland in the currently ongoing international search for the recently discovered radio anomaly. At today’s weekly public press conference, a spokesperson for the Federal Council announced that it “welcomes all interested international parties, whether they be individuals, organizations, or government bodies, to operate and launch expeditions from Alpyrea.” This surprising move comes after a cryptic message was transmitted from an unknown source, traced to the Durkheim Mountains in central Romaxia... The aid and provisions offered include refueling services for aircraft and other vehicles, permission to use Alpyrean airfields and harbors, and discounted hotel, food, and equipment services. Read more about it here. In other news, the DSA Olympic Games have been announced, with teams around the world being registered to participate. Unfortunately, Alpyrea will not be participating as of now according to the Federal Council due to a lack of trained and/or professional national athletes, along with ongoing internal conflict... |

"It's working... IT'S WORKING," Dr. Thorogood exclaimed in a tone that was clearly some composition of surprise, glee, and maybe, pride. The makeshift radiowave frequency modulation device (RFMD) was picking up broad band transmissions. Crackle... DSA Olympics. Teams have been announced from....Crackle, CRACKLE, .... will be held in.... Thorogood thumbed the RFMD's dials slowly... Crackle... DSAN crackle... It is believed that the message is being projected from the Durkheim Mountains in central Romaxia... CRACKLE "That was something, Doctor, can you get that back?" asked Chairwoman Zhaan. Thorogood muttered something under his breath about maybe if someone had seen fit to provide him with the elemental quartz he had requisitioned, the damn RFMD would work a bit better, but noooo. Some careful adjustment of the dial later, and he seems to have stabilized the stream. In an unexpected move, the Alpyrea Federal Council issued a statement this morning offering aid and provisions for those intending to head inland in the currently ongoing international search for the recently discovered radio anomaly. At today’s weekly public press conference, a spokesperson for the Federal Council announced that it “welcomes all interested international parties, whether they be individuals, organizations, or government bodies, to operate and launch expeditions from Alpyrea. "Well, that sounds like a good thing," Thorogood ventured. "True enough. Although I had heard rumors that this planet has sentient lynxes living on it somewhere, and I don't think that the 'Alpyrea Federal Council' was their origin. Upsetting because I was hoping to meet a sentient lynx." "You are... odd, Chairwoman," Thorogood said, after a brief pause. "I shall take that compliment at full value, doctor. Thank you for this... RFMD, you called it? You have done good work on this project." With that, Zhaan began making preparations for when aid workers are actually encountered by Burninites.... "So how bad is it?" Dr. Maya Verrara shook her head a huff of frustration. "Better than I thought, but still pretty bad. I'm just glad it's over with." She was sitting on a hard bench in the back of a noisy supply helicopter, next to her longtime friend and colleague Professor Ceera Partik. She'd just finished reading through the interview that the Herald had published that day, which had been heavily edited and censored. In a low voice, she continued, "They didn't even publish the actual questions..." "Well, you know how it is. Everyone does," Ceera reminded her, quickly glancing up at the cockpit. "Don't worry, they're with us." Maya looked around the cabin yet again. In the back, several large crates and containers carried their equipment, from expensive cameras and various scientific equipment to rations and fresh water. Sitting directly across from them were two other expedition members, though she couldn't remember their names at first. She looked down at her lap, and pulled up the expedition files once again. Right, Manuel and Olivia. The two were married, actually, and both worked for Sakiba University's Natural Sciences research division. They and one other individual were the only expedition members she hadn't personally picked, and were simply recommended by one of her friends who knew a person that knew a person... Either way, they seemed like they knew what they were doing, based on the work she'd seen so far. For the twentieth time, she looked out the windowpane of the helicopter's door. It was almost pitch darkness outside, with the waning moon obscured by wispy clouds hanging in the dark sky. All she could see on the ground was the occasional rise of rolling terrain of what appeared to be savanna. Scraggly trees rose up here and there, casting long but faded shadows on the rapidly passing ground. And in the distance, their destination: the Durkheim Mountains. She sighed and looked down again. Maybe this wasn't a good idea. This whole expedition would undoubtedly be spun by the government into a national success story, the brave expedition heading into the unknown, while the said expedition had to scrounge for their own supply of rations in the market stalls of Port Sakiba. Even the helicopters- some 4 in total- were old and worn-down, the interior walls a stark steel gray and the controls very much outdated: the best Alpyrea had to offer. No matter; she was here to aid people, even if she didn't know who they were. She looked over her shoulder and saw Ceera passed out, sleeping after an exhausting day of preparations and flight. I should get some rest as well, I suppose. Within five minutes, all that could be heard in the cabin was the muffled whirs of the rotors, heading for new peaks. ![]() This is Gary Johnson reporting from the base of the Durkheim Mountains. It would seem that more and more people have been gathering at the base of the mountains. While some are still searching for the mysterious radio source, it seems that many, mostly college students and college graduates, are just kind of chilling. More are coming in by the day, bring large amounts of pizza, weed, and other IMMORAL VICES to the once pleasant mountain base. Some estimates place the amount of youths here between 9,000 and 17,000. It would seem like most are coming due to both the amount of publicity the event is getting as well as with popular internet personalities posting about the event on social media. By the looks of it, they've settled in quite nicely. There are already designated living areas, lines of porta-potties, even a tent for a circus that has arrived. Earlier I stumbled upon shacks and tents that act as food stalls, 11 by my count. There has even been an amusement ride that was brought here. Reports are coming in of a stage being built in anticipation of popular music artists arriving. It would look as if, for most, the original purpose of the expedition has ended and has turned more into a festival. However, there are still those who are here for the radio, with expeditions being made up the mountain and base camps forming along the cliff sides. Will we learn what the radio source is, or will we have found the next big festival location?

Messages from Director of Trade & Commerce Message #3 Dear DSA members, A little danger is waiting for us. Fuel prices increased by the biggest monthly amount since January 2011, rising by 6.8%. Recent large rises in the cost of crude oil have fed through to prices paid by consumers at the pump. Luckily in our country, automobile is not very common with -4.47 index. Also our country is in the first 25% of the world rankings. Anyway, the effect was also seen in rising prices for air and ferry travel. Why am I writing this message? Because East Dominica Island can provide cash support for all DSA members. Those who ask for support can send direct message to the board of Trade & Commerce. "The powerhouse East Dominica Islandian economy, worth 65.5 trillion Caribbean Dollars a year." Cordially, Mert Director of Trade & Commerce |

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was the professional rescue party sent by the Alpyrea Federal Council that located the source of the signal first. You get what you pay for, and, well, it almost seemed like the party from Student Loan Debt was a bit more focused on the second half of the term "rescue party" than it was on the first half. Doctor Thorogood had managed to cobble together some short-ranged radar, and the Alpyreans had helicopters, which aren't exactly stealthy. Anyway, Chairwoman Zhaan herself donned the appropriate winter-themed clothing to meet their saviors herself. It would take a surprisingly small amount of resources to save the Burninite people, it turns out. If they could make it through the upcoming cold season, they'd be golden. Can't keep a colony of botanists down even in a taiga biome. But short term food supplies.... To the arriving rescuers, the Burninites standing in wait for them would look human from afar. But upon closer inspection, some differences would become clear. Slightly taller and thinner than humans, and a slightly elongated skull, for starters. In the spirit of the occasion, the Chairwoman was prepared to give the Alpyreans a sapling from the Great Tree itself -- the sacred tree kept at the center of Burninandom, symbolizing its living heart. She hadn't really decided what to do about the festival crowds showing up in what is technically Burninite land. The biggest worry was that some thrill-seeking Burninites would try to covertly show up in the festival and mingle with the planetary locals for the lulz. In fact, the Chairwoman basically has written this eventuality off as inevitable. Equally inevitable -- the planetary locals would surely not long be fooled by a disguise of human clothing. Burninites clearly aren't human. They'd be recognized as aliens, and then there would be a scene, probably. Zhaan made a mental note to send some people to keep watch over those festivals from nearby in case things got out of hand... |

The Citizenry radio burst alive in the Council Chamber with a wave of delayed signals, surprising everyone in the room. "See my fellow Councilors, we seem to have a radio problem in these mountains, we Have made this a priority. Our international allies may be trying to contact us.", exclaimed Bartleby McGevin executive Councilor of Foreign Affairs. He stood with his radio above his head, which seemed to be a strain for his limited movement due to his suit. He set down the radio and looked about, stroking his grizzly beard. "Councilor Wilhelmina and the Academy has been doing some work on the project, and they claim to have made a breakthrough." Sitting down, he cues for a small woman in a lab coat to stand. "Yes, we have done a bit in regards to this and developed a defractor radio. This will take the signals and split them into new frequencies. Issue is it may corrupt the signal slightly, but it is better than having everything coming in." Helga Wilhelmina walked over to Councilor McGevin's radio and attached a strange device to its antenna which seemed to draw in an electric current and swirl about it. "Now try the radio." McGevin leaned forward and turned on the radio to release a stream of static. Tuning into various frequencies they passed a few familiar voices, Gary Johnson of DSAN covering what seemed to be a live concert, an economic news bulletin from Mert, and a typical invitation from Alpyrea. One frequency halted them. A call from a previously unknown nation of Burninandom requesting Humanitarian assistance. Upon hearing this it made everything else over the last few days seem clear in terms of international correspondence. The Durkheim mountains, the invitation from Alpyrea, the festival, everything was making sense to the Council. "Well, I guess we respond to the frequency and see if there is any more that can be done. We were a bit late to the party, so we might of missed everything." McGevin nodded, looking at the rest of the Councilors. "I assume we can agree to be dismissed." With a resounding "Aye" from all Councilors. McGevin began to send the broadcast with the help of Wilhelmina. "Greetings Burninandom, We apologize for the lateness of our messaging, but we thought it still necessary to check in on the situation. Is there anything else that is needed. Being a mountainous region ourselves we can provide assistance in education of how to best flourish in these conditions. If it is only materials that are needed, we don't have much, but we'll spare all we can in order to help a nation in need. Please respond to the continued frequency for further discourse. The Executive Council of Tiekerrick signing out." |

"- had concluded a week ago with a 11-16 vote, which according to the Herald prompted the Port to respond with an official resolution. We still don't have all the details, but it appears that Special Rep. Felger will be recalled home from the Federal Council in Domardost if all goes well. We here at PSRN-AM will continue to bring you updates on the ongoing situation-" Dr. Verrara turned the radio off, looking up from her empty work area. Base camp was a flat outcropping of one of the many mountains, big enough to fit all four of the run-down helicopters and a few tents, one of which became the overcrowded lab tent. Another tent held the food and medical aid they were bringing as "humanitarian assistance", though Maya genuinely didn't know what exactly they could do to help this Chairwoman of "Burninandom". No one had ever heard of such a place or group, and while theories were being thrown up by the various members of the team she privately thought each one sounded more ridiculous than the last. Crashed aliens? That's just absurd. "What'cha looking at?" Maya started, then turned to the uninvited visitor at the tent entrance. "Nothing, nothing. Anything new?" Edith shrugged. "Flew over a couple more mountains, saw a few more animals, and that's it I suppose. Oh, and those pesky festivals of course." As one of the pilots, Mooreston was often out on the search, taking the daytime shift to look for the source of the transmission. With their limited technology and lack of information, the expedition members were combing through the mountain range bit by bit as tracking down the original transmission was proving near impossible with the brevity of the message and rugged nature of the mountains. It was only a matter of time, though, and both the pilot and the doctor knew it. A voice called from outside the tent. "Hey everyone, I think we've picked up something on the cameras!" |
