So here we go again.

This time around, after criticism about the quiet cabinet, I'm going to try being a little whiny. As soon as I settle into the summer a bit I hope to begin working on a few amendments that I think will help with regional operation.

Increasing term lengths to 90 days, instead of 75. Considering our election activity and competition levels (though this one was an improvement mainly due to some overparticipation by one individual), I think a slightly longer term will improve the stability of the cabinet and improve our voter participation a little while making cabinet positions that much more desirable.

File the required paperwork so we can have a presidential puppet to speed up any future changes of power. Dealing with almost a month of endorsement trading is undesirable.

Finally, additional forum management rights for MoDA. SG will remain in charge of managing groups and their authorizations. It was my position during the last cabinet that our current forum set up is needlessly complex with nested subforums out the wazzoo, leaving many with very few posts and making the entire thing difficult to navigate and monitor. I think that changing this falls more readily into the purview of MoDA and this is one of the topics I will be especially TG spammy about.

Otherwise, new business? Old business? Bring it on.

Just a quick question: as MoRP, do i have freedom to run RP events without first confirming them with thr rest of the Cabinet?
Absolutely!

(Also, why do I have so many posts? I must be underestimating my participation in regional affairs...)

Comrades,

I am reaching out to you to ask if you would be willing to serve on a steering committee for a NationStates LeftExpo. It has now been two years since the last LeftExpo, and I think we have a good chance to reboot it. I've telegrammed you all as representatives of The Internationale (Auhl and Teksi), the DSA (Defwa and Terlibe), North Korea (Marxist-Feminists and Comradeland), and Das Kommune (4years and Custadia). I think our four regions are representative of some of the largest and most active revolutionary leftist regions on NationStates, and four of the six participating members of the 2013 Expo.

I am thinking that it might be useful to model this year's LeftExpo on the NS World Fair that Unibot has put on in the past. While I am far from a Unibot fan, his World Fairs have been successful events and have gathered a good deal of engagement. Obviously, as a LeftExpo being closed to leftist regions, we won't be nearly as large, but I think the model for a successful interregional festival is there all the same.

The only other thought that I think is worth sharing beyond a formalized steering committee is that I think it would be a good idea to hold this event in the last week of June (June 29 - July 3). I'll admit that I have a selfish motivation, as holding it during this week would allow The Internationale to celebrate its first refound anniversary as part of the festivities, but it would also generate some activity in the summer months.

If you are interested in serving on the steering committee, please let me know! If you are not interested, that's fine - no hard feelings. I'd like to get the committee finalized in the next few days so we can get this ball rolling and have a chance at a successful Expo.

In solidarity comrades!

Misley

I confess I rarely have much faith in these due to my own failure to involve myself in things like it. Terlibe, Communicar, what is your evaluation / level of interest

I would certainly find this an interesting opportunity to share ideas across regions, and see how other leftist regions work differently to our own. It would be particularly interesting to see what models of RP othet leftist regions have found succesful in the past

Just a quick proposal for the Saint James dispatch 'So Your New To The DSA', considering a lot of the current dispatch is outdated

Greetings! You, like us, are dedicated to the cause of Democracy, Equality, Solidarity, Freedom and have decided to join us! But you don't quite know what to do. Now that the black helicopters have magically transported you here, you're confused about what else could possibly happen. Well, never fear! Communicar and the rest of the DSA are here to help unravel the mysteries of the Democratic Socialist Assembly and NationStates as a whole!

So that's a weird name you've got there... Why "Assembly"?
It's a rather long story that dates back nearly three years now. There was once a Democratic Socialist Alliance, but then things happened... The founder abused their power and Opalaland and New Bazlantis, rivals for the delegacy in the old Alliance, decided to start a new region but kept the old initials. Thus, The DSA was born.

Okay then. So what do I do now?
Well, I would recommend that you register on our regional forum. That is the place where the most important events in our region, like elections, happen. It's also the hub of our regional government and the place that hosts our most furious debates and wacky roleplays.
Once you're there, I'd recommend looking over and opting-in to our Charter, the supreme governing document and compact of our region. Sort of like of our own little constitution. Opting-in confers upon you membership in the Congress of the DSA, the legislative body of the region, and rights and privileges not afforded to ordinary residents. However, it confers an additional obligation on you. You will need to maintain Civil Rights and Political Freedoms of at least "Good" to be a Member of Congress, while being an ordinary resident only requires CR and PF of "Average".

That seems a little unfair. What if I don't have those kind of stats?
The requirements are an in-character way of doing a quality check on our members. Since we as a region are dedicated to the advancement of democracy and civil liberties, we expect our member nations to uphold them. Resident nations who refuse to risk being ejected from the region.
But, if you need any help getting to that mark, Ratateague has some helpful resources for you in his "Center for Nations Who Can't Lead Good and Wanna Learn to Do Other Stuff Good Too". The Minister of Justice is rather cooperative with nations who need to get their cards in line and will only authorise ejections for those who flagrantly refuse to even try. If you really want to stay, the MoJ will give you every opportunity to allow you to do so.

I'm a World Assembly member. Am I supposed to give endorsements to anyone?
like many other large regions, the DSA has a loose policy on WA endorsments. You can choose to give and receive them as you please, with almost no limit on how many you can get, but you must endorse the current WA DelegateThe only other thing to be aware of is to not get so many endorsements as to usurp the Delegate, who is elected every 75 days in a separate process from endorsements and then given endorsements to raise them to the position in-game. If you somehow manage to usurp the democratically-elected Delegate, you risk being (temporarily) ejected by the Founder so as to restore the rightful delegate to power.
Other than that, there are no rules. You can endorse anyone for any reason and actively seek endorsements if you like. Endorsing the Delegate effectively gives you two votes on WA resolutions: your personal vote and one of the Delegate's votes resulting from your endorsement. As an extra bonus, the Delegate's votes are directed not by their personal opinions on resolutions, but on the collective opinion of the DSA as a whole.

How do I get a slice of that map?
If you are a Member of Congress, all you need to do is stake a claim on our regional map. Just keep it reasonable and our glorious Minister of Role Play will be happy to oblige.
It should be noted that the MoRP has the authority to refuse a claim if s/he deems it to be unreasonable. A country the size of Corpshire alliance or Pisces meridian will do for most nations. If you want to get anything larger, you'll need some justification for it. Epicion is a maritime empire, while Kandorith is the same on land; Suceavija and his Commonwealth of Nations are a psuedo-empire of puppet states. If you don't have a backstory that justifies a large claim like them, don't ask for anything ridiculously large.

I Want To Take Part In Role Plays, Do They Exist Here?

At the time of writing, Roleplay in the DSA is at a bit of a Lull, however, the current MoRP, Communicar, is attempting to increase participation, and it appears to be going well, so by the time you read this, the answer will be yes, they do exist. You will find current RP events in the Roleplay section of the Forum, or if you have difficulty finding them, you can always telegram the Minister Of Role Play and ask what RPs are currently running.

OK, i think i get it now. One last thing: i saw in the Regional Factbook the DSA Cabinet. What is that, and how do i get involved?

The DSA Cabinet is a governing body, elected every 75 days, which consists of 7 positions, each with a specific mandate for improving the region, as detailed below by our current President, [nation]Defwa[/nation]

President Of The DSA

The President and WA Delegate serves as a public face for the DSA, representing the region for public declarations. The president also has the duty of setting directives for the rest of the Cabinet to ensure it is productive.

Secretary General
The Secretary General keeps the region in order by managing elections, ensuring that all members have all the rights guaranteed to them by the Charter, and curating official documents and records.

Minister Of Foreign Affairs
The Minister of Foreign Affairs collects information on other regions and keeps the Cabinet apprised usually through the use of Ambassadors.

Minister Of Immigration and Regional Promotion
The Minister of Immigration and Regional Promotion recruits nations into the region usually by operating programs that monitor for new players with leftist leanings.

Minister Of Domestic Affairs
The Minister of Domestic Affairs spurs conversation within the region and manages the forum to foster stronger bonds between members of the region.

Minister Of Justice
The Minister of Justice ensures that all members of the DSA are compliant with charter requirements, expels those that fail after a probationary period, and can be called upon to settle disputes between members or try cabinet members for impeachment.

Minister Of Role Play
The Minister of Roleplay creates opportunities for members of the region to role play with each other and keeps the regional map up to date.

Ok, so now your ready to go! Be sure to check in on the Regional Message Board and introduce yourself, and ask any questions this hasnt already answered for you!

Great work with the new form of the "So You're New to the DSA..." revamp. My comments, in the order that I observed the issues, not order of importance:

- We have to make sure that the many hyperlinks are kept intact when we post the new text
- I would keep out of the text, this time, any nation name except for those really really needed, because experience showed us that eventually all nations may disappear for some time and then the text makes no sense for the newcomer. I propose to keep the history part with the founders, but not even that is necessary, since they are referenced in the linked text.
- We may want to make it a bit impersonal and use "we" instead of "I", especially since we are shamelessly reusing St James work and if he cannot be the "I", neither of us should.
- "like many other large regions" should start with a capital L.
- "endorsments" should be spelled "endorsements"
- "you must endorse the current WA Delegate" should be followed by a full stop and a space.
- I would not mention the exact way the delegate is elected (the 75 days part), because it may change and we don;t want to need to update this generic info too.
- in "OK, i think i get it now. One last thing: i saw in the Regional Factbook the DSA Cabinet. What is that, and how do i get involved?" the i's should be capitalized.
- I would rephrase this "The DSA Cabinet is a governing body, elected every 75 days, which consists of 7 positions, each with a specific mandate for improving the region, as detailed below by our current President, Defwa" into something which adheres to the above proposed characteristics: no nation names, no specific numbers (75 days, 7 positions". As a rule, I thinkl that we should keep in mind that we want the text to remain valid as long as possible with no need to change it again.

I hope my suggestions are more useful than annoying. Thanks for working on the text!

Hi all,

today, the following nations have been put on probation for 7 days and have been given notice that they do not meet Residency requirements:

a_random_anhurian_diplomatic_post
iraf
pyneland
skipetars
aragona_nova
godless_monkey_ii
spr_novaya_zemlya
maundville
sostan
beyrock
calimen

I used the following telegram to inform them about what's happening:

Quote:

Hi there, <insert_short_nation_name>!

This is an important telegram from your Minister of Justice, regarding your residency status.

As you (may) know, the [region]Democratic Socialist Assembly[/region] has a very clear and properly enforced rule regarding the minimum level of Civil Rights and Political Freedom a nation must have to be allowed to be a Resident. All Residents must have a minimum rating of "Average" for both Civil Rights and Political Freedom at any given time. This is specified by our Charter (http://s1.zetaboards.com/DemocraticSocialist/topic/5239370/1/), which must be followed by every nation within the DSA.

It is my duty as MoJ to inform you about these requirements and to let you know that you have one week starting today to reach the needed levels, during which time you are placed under probation.

If either your Civil Rights or your Political Freedom levels will be lower than "Average" after this deadline, I would be forced to recommend your your ejection from the region. Since this is something I would prefer to avoid, I am willing to help you improve the needed stats, per your request. If you are not sure how to start, please check this compilation of guides regarding how issues affect your nation: http://s1.zetaboards.com/DemocraticSocialist/topic/5052223/1/

I hope that after the 7 days of probation everything will be fine and your nation can be permitted to reside in the [region]Democratic Socialist Assembly[/region].

In solidarity,

[nation]Borq[/nation]
Minister of Justice, [region]Democratic Socialist Assembly[/region]

I will follow up with them, and I will inform Defwa after one week if any of them should be ejected, as per our Charter.

Most of these i agree with, the exception being the part about excluding Defwa's name from the last section. I thought it best to reference him as he wrote the descriptions.

As for the spelling and gramattical errors, i am working from a phone with a near impossible to use keyboard, and some errors are bound to go unnoticed!

Thank you for your input, i will look at correcting the document soon

Quick question to all: do you know of any treaty with The Versutian Federation regarding inviting their MoJ to observe our Court's proceedings? I keep finding this note ("in accordance with our agreement with The Versutian Federation I have invited the Minister of Justice of The Versutian Federation, Jenlom, to observe this legal process") in previous Court proceedings, but I don't know where it comes from (and Riasy is no more to ask him directly).
From what I've seen on their RMB, they have active cases, but we were not invited to observe, so I'm not sure if any treaty is still in effect reg. this topic.
Thanks!
