We have a very diverse group of individuals in the DSA and I would love to hear how you came to the decision to become a socialist.

Great idea. I'll repost my story from the regional message board to try get the ball rolling.

If you're interested, I can put in my 2 cents. I'm 22-years-young now, but at the time of secondary school (high school), I had the option between taking history, geography, or modern studies, and I ended up taking the latter. Took an interest in politics from there, got high grades, and heard about this dude called Che Guevara, whoever he is. Read a little into the Cuban revoltion, which took me to the Russian revolution, discovered communism, and started comparing the morality of the political lefts and rights. Found my place in the political left, and for a long time considered myself a communist until I eventually couldn't abide by the restriction on civil rights, whereby I slipped nicely into socialism. In Scotland, my country, there's been a nationalist movement really getting of the ground recently with a push for independence from the UK. We recently had a referendum for the question "Should Scotland become an independent country?", where the Yes side unfortunately lost by 45-55, and this being a democracy, I've have to deal with. The main political parties that allied themselves with a Yes vote were the Scottish National Party (SNP, the ones who managed to get a referendum), the Scottish Green Party (all-round good guys with environmental protection being their main point), and the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP). I found all three of these parties to be on varying levels of the political left, got myself read up on the issues, and that pretty much cemented my socialist philosophies. I'm a member of the SNP right now, but I'm thinking of switching to the Scottish Greens, as they seem to have the clearest conscience out of everyone.

And there's my story. Sorry for boring you to tears.

I was eating lunch at a cafeteria after a band concert in 8th grade and overheard one of my friends say, "I think communism is the best form of government (...) it just couldn't happen." I was rather confused that he would be open-minded towards a left-wing ideology; after all, he was a supporter of the GOP. So, I decided to look up what communism actually is and what the basic branches of it were. I was shocked, as I was brainwashed to believe it was a totalitarian system synonymous with fascism. I researched other branches and connected the most with Trotskyism. I took numerous political tests and acquainted myself with political knowledge. I still have the results of my first political compass test: (-6.12, -5.08). I read a copy of the Communist Manifesto online and officially branded myself a "communist." Since then, my views have changed. My beliefs have changed since then, and now I don't affiliate with any branch of communist, although I'd be best described as a council communist.

To cut a very long story short, I started watching the news and, as a result, joined the UK Labour Party.
