Small scale protests: a necessary first step or a big mistake

Many times in the past I've witnessed various small scale protests for or against some cause or movement and I've often wondered if these protests are a good think or a bad thing. On the one hand, they offer that particular cause a certain visibility that it would otherwise not have. On the other, it opens the way to ridicule. A protest by 50 or so people can seem comical rather than impressive, and passers by (myself included at various point in my life) usually dismiss both the protest and the cause. Friends of mine have expressed a similar view o small protests.

So what do you think is the best course? Should small scale protests be used to attract attention or should other means be used to build a cause or movement up before protests are called?

It's very rare for mass protests to spontaneously erupt without significant preparatory work going on beforehand, often by very small groups.

Likewise, there is no guarantee that mass scale will ensure the success of a protest movement, or that a small protest will be ineffective. Everything depends on context.

Did you have any particular examples in mind?

I think that the protests form the beginning of a movement. They help show that some people with their own views are not only in number, but also happy to reveal themselves publicly, inciting others to join them and moving others towards thinking in that direction.
