As the role play coordinator, I feel that it would be a good idea to host a roleplay convention for the DSA. Everyone is invited, and strongly encouraged to participate and have their say. The purpose of this meeting is to come up with some standardized roleplay history and geography behind the region, as well as to come up with rules and regulations for roleplaying. Of course, any rules we come up with would be completely voluntary and shall not be enforced. You will still have the right to claim that your nation is an intergalactic empire run by space unicorns, we shall not infringe on that ![]() The idea of rules is not to restrict people, but to make sure that when we are doing international affair roleplays (like wars, etc.) that everyone is on the same page. I am strongly against, "godmodding," which is where one player roleplays another person's character against their will. An example of this would be where they would kill off another person's character without their permission, or destroy another person's nation by claiming that they nuked them in a single sentence. My opinion is that in these cases, it is best for the other players to come to some agreement or pact to ignore those kinds of posts. Another thing which might be a good idea to discuss is what kind of populations, GDPs, technology, and military forces are acceptable. We could allow everyone to use their stats on nationstates, but I prefer the idea of allowing people to choose these things by themselves, as long as they are within reason. In my case, I would imagine my population to be different than the figures on nationstates. For example, on NS, Lemur Isles is 400+ million, while it is small on the regional map. I would actually imagine it to be 5 million max. Another thing I would like to discuss, is whether our nations should be democratic socialists in RPs? The DSA's regulations mean that nations must have a certain amount of political and economic freedoms, but I'm wondering if this would have to be enforced in the realm of role play? I think that dictatorships can spice things up to be honest, conflict is what makes stories good. Another thing we should maybe come to a consensus about, is what is the DSA in terms of roleplay? Should it be an international organization like the EU, a military alliance, a loose trade confederation? Also, should we claim that the region is located in the real world, or some kind of parallel universe? If you don't like anything I have said, please say so, this will only work with everyone's input. I'm just throwing around ideas here which I think and hope would make Roleplaying more enjoyable for everyone. I know that a lot of you are great writers with great imaginations, as can be seen in your factbooks, yet one thing that is noticeable in it's absence is international affairs. This role play forum is quite empty, and I would like to see it become more lively. |

Well, the first thing that comes to my mind is that the DSA is too homogenous to be realistically role-played as a region. It would be better if in-character it would be something along the lines of the EU. An organization of leftist nations. I'll try to think of other ideas

This sounds like a great idea, but, like Grobladonia said, the DSA is too homogenous. This means that no one really want to act like the dictator, and there will not be any real conflicts among us. I also agree that the populations and figures in NS are bloated, so describing the realities about your country could be a good idea. |

I've thought before that the EU is a good model for how the DSA and many other regions in NS work, so maybe we could frame some of the role play activities in those terms. We could negotiate opt-in treaties on visa waivers and create customs free zones, for instance. |

Those are all good points! I agree that the EU would be a good model for the DSA organization to follow. I think it would be a good idea to use our charter as a guideline for the set up of the organisation; the DSA congress could be an assembly of representatives from the charter nations who meet in the Capitol of the DSA to pass international laws that the charter signatory nations must abide by. I like Gervase's idea of making up in-character treaties, free trade agreements, and open border policies. We could have Role plays where our nations' representatives can discuss and argue over certain treaties and laws. You are probably right that not many people would be willing to RP as dictators and stuff, especially with their charter signatory nations. But we could always use evil puppets that can cause havoc, who aren't signed up to the laws of the DSA organisation, but who exist in the region and on the map. I for one would be more than happy to play bad guy with my puppet "Vertige." It is after all a corrupt empire run by corporations, feuding ancient families, and an emperor

Also, another thing we could do along with our modern RPs, is have past-tech RPs, set in our nations before their democratic/socialist revolutions/reforms?

I also think that we could potentially use our locations on the map as a way of influencing with which nations we interact with. This is way we could have border disputes or more interactions with the nations that are actually nearby on the map. |

Agreed, it is always important to bear in mind the map in these kind of role plays. Also, I think neighbouring countries often affect each other's history too, countries rarely develop in isolation. I'm actually writing up a history in my factbook and I'm hoping to find out more about the history of other nations that are close to mine so that my nation's past can be intertwined with theirs. |
