Virtualization is the creation of the virtual version of a device or resource such as network, server, storage device or even an operating system. The different types of virtualization include network virtualization, application virtualization, server virtualization, storage virtualization and operating system virtualization. Leading corporate organisations such as Intel are introducing Intel VT or Intel Virtualization technology. Intel VT is promoting CPU virtualization, memory virtualization, network function virtualization and input or output virtualization. In the CPU virtualization, all the software in the Virtual Machine can run without any performance or compatibility issue similar to the functions of the Intel CPU. Live migration from one Intel CPU generation to another is possible. Memory virtualization enables monitoring of memory on a per Virtual Machine basis. It also facilitates live migration of Virtual Machines, improves fault tolerance and enhances security. Network Function Virtualization technologies from Intel enable network and security functions to be deployed as software on standard high volume servers anywhere in the data center. NFV appliances can co-locate with business workloads in virtual domains. Virtualization is developing better data centers with more efficiency for managing more workloads; Microsoft virtualization solutions are furthering the basic virtualization capabilities and improving the operational efficiencies of organisations. These virtualization solutions from Microsoft are built on Hyper –V and included in Windows server to consolidate more workloads on fewer servers. Another leading corporate organisation Dell is also gathering pace with its virtualization products and services for data center virtualization. Dell provides virtualized storage solutions such as Dell Compellent SC8000 with high storage capacity; Dell is also successful in providing server, storage and desktop virtualization solutions. Virtualization is truly improving the efficiency and performance of organisations with specialised products and solutions.
