Would like to add a few points when jobbing as a gunner, and mainly general points for gunning in pillys, flotillas or atlantis trips. General As gunner your main priority is guns. If you're on a station helping out before the guns starts firing, you're expected to drop it promptly regardless of how well or badly you're doing on that puzzle when you're needed. Saying this, its not necessary to take a station when you're not gunning, this is your own choice if you wish to help out when you think you don't have a long puzzle session on the duty stations. Board Sitting Though you may find a very good board (e.g. no arrow board) and wish to stay on it, board sitting is only recommended when you're on small ships. Such as sloops and dhows, theres only 1 set of guns and you're the only gunner. It'll save you time finding an array of good boards and you can maintain a high speed (and slow it down by dumping pieces if its too fast). Also it depends on how many gunners there are to the available set of guns to fill. If theres 3 gunners on a war brig (though unnecessary) one could sit on the board while the others share 3 sets. However you will have to use your own judgment if you need to hop off to fill an unattended set of guns. Atlantis Usually spaces available to gun is fairly contested and is in my opinion a privilege. Partly because even if you're gunning average in comparison to other gunners, you're more likely to receive more rewards and items at the end of the trip. Also because you're not required to puzzle on any other stations and not required to defend. But, you may need to miss out opportunities to Treasure Haul when theres guns constantly need filling. Even on large ships the number of gunners is very small, so if you're doing something else (e.g. treasure hauling) you're impeding the overall speed of guns keeping up with the battle navigator using them. This can be very much frown upon if you're significantly neglecting your duty at a time of need. One other thing I'd like to add that if you're afraid of losing your gun standing, don't offer to gun outside the navy. As there are times when the barrel rolls to the edge or you simply realize too late you got a really shoddy board that can take a blow on your standing. But on that note, gunning outside the navy can hone your overall skills with all the hardships it has that the navy does not. ![]() Discussion links: Gunning during a pilly |
