Blame your genes for 40% of behaviour

People wanting to shirk responsibility for their behaviour will be happy to learn they can blame their parents for almost half of it.

An Australian psychologist has aggregated the results of hundreds of studies on human behaviour and found 40 per cent can be put down to human genetics.

"While there had been many studies done on specific behaviours such as alcoholism or smoking, we were interested to see if we could put a figure on the genetic influence on behaviour in general," said Dr John Malouff, from the University of New England.

"We looked at a whole range of normal and problem behaviours, and what we found was that again and again, the genetic component of these behaviours tended to clump around the 40 per cent mark."

He said this definitively makes genetics the single most powerful influence on a person's behaviour over their lifetime.

"If you look at what we know about what causes behaviour, it's hard to find another chunk so large," Dr Malouff said.

"While a short-term situation may have a strong influence on behaviour, in the long run genes are very important."

However, he was quick to add that genes were not "destiny".

"An example I give to my clients is hair colour," the specialist said.

"Hair colour is genetically determined. You're born blonde, red-headed, brunette. You can change that, but you have to keep working at it.

"Unless you dye your hair every couple of weeks, it's going to revert to its natural colour."

He said behaviour was similar.

"People need to keep working on their bad habits or behaviours if they want to change them, especially if they are predisposed to continue them."

The findings are published in the journal Current Psychology.

So, what are reactions to this? To you believe the findings, or perhaps feel like debating it? Shoot!

I say it's more of friends that make how you behave. Genes probly has a small part but not as big as your friends.

So you think you're influenced more by outside influences then genetics? Fair call.

Definitely. There's no doubt that genes play a small role in who you are, that's nature. But the greater portion of your identity and personality is the direct result of your interactions with every single person you've ever met. And, your experiences in the world.

I actually think it's parents influence who determines most behavior.

My parents have nothing to do with how I am. It's my friends' faults. :p

It could be your genes that are making you think that. >=D

But I agree with Royce, I think I've been more influenced by my parents than friends, not just in the genetic sense. I doubt that would always be the case, as Anthrax has stated.
But people can be influenced by anything they interact with. But like Dumbledore says, "It is not our abilities that make us who we are, it is our choices."

You think because he's gay doesn't make his words relevant?

I would say that about 80 percent is social influences a4nd 20 percent genetic. Life chances are an important factor also.

Oh oh, and StarGate likership.

Really interesting article, 40% is a larger percentage than I would have expected. But is it really just genes? Or seeing your parents behaviour and replicating it as well to a certain extent. Tsk tsk tsk, extraneous variables.

That makes sense, especially since I blame the other 60% on PMS.
