So I've been thinking about this for a while now, but I'm not sure whether to go ahead with it. I'm thinking about moving Dashing to a self-hosted forum provider, like SMF, myBB (myBB looks best) or phpbb3. This is so we can host Dashing on our own database, so if we ever want to move forums we have all our members/posts installed in the database and can be moved effortlessly. Also, it's better security-wise, because we can make our own backups. The only problem here is, we'll have to move away from Zetaboards and once again, lose our members/posts. However, if we do this now, it will be the last time we will ever lose those (because we'll have the database of our posts and we can move them without trouble). I need some input from you guys because as nice as it would be, I'm still a little unsure about it. :| |

MY first forum was a phpbb. It's kind of a different style then IF. To start over yet again would be harsh but it's a good idea for backing up incase we have to do it again. Then again we'd lose everything we got so far.. again. So don't count this for anything towards your decision. |

Unfortunately an IPB license costs money... money I don't want to pay. I'm personally not a fan of phpbb, but phpbb3 isn't too bad. I'll probably use myBB if we do go to self hosting though. I think I can actually get access to the Zetaboards database if I pay them money, but again, it's money I don't want to spend... :/ If it's less than $30, then maybe... |

You can not convert the ZB database to anything as that's only for Invisionfree that you can get the database that can get converted to IPB. You still have to pay money for hosting as free hosting is quite frankly shit. The board itself is free if you go SMF or PHPBB but you still have to pay a monthly fee to host the board. |

Actually, I've heard of some decent free webhosts. http://novahost.org/ is one of them. I'm not sure how much 1GB is worth on a forum though. I'm guessing it would be a decent amount. Don't. If you move again many people may just decide to not come back. As a forum overall, one move was bad, however the chances were with you and it was a success. But moving again, we run the risk of just dying. However there is the chance the forum takes off even better than now... plus the free web hosting... Im all ears for whatever happens. |

I don't really want to be stuck with Zetaboards forever and the sooner the move, the less we'll lose. :/ If this happens around December, then I will have a fair bit of spare time to set up and get things rolling. As for the activity thing, yes, there is a chance we'll die. There's also a chance that people will stop coming to 'this' forum and it will die. But yeah, this is why I have the feedback thread, to see how many people are willing to move. I may be able to get some help from others to move over some of the posts (I also may be able to set up a robot to do it, but don't expect it to happen). |

Wow, thanks for that Zenith. O.O The converter to SMF is looking rather delicious and I hear SMF is probably the easiest one for a beginner to use. My Mac should be able to run that Python thing without too much trouble as well, which should be good. Though myBB would still be nice. Do you have a tutorial or program that will convert the SMF/phpBB2 to myBB? Or is that included in the program there as well? I could also stick with SMF for a while to try and learn the ropes of self-hosting. 
LiteBulletin is myBB and I was thinking about it, but it's still a little new and I may wait for some of the bugs to get kinked before trying it.. Edited by santanoice, Nov 6 2009, 12:42:47 PM.

*Bump* Just on a quick update, I have a SMF forum up and running (SMF seems to be a bit easier to use than myBB, plus the converter works for it) and managed to get the converter to do some stuff. I suspect we could be approximately 50% converted, which was something I really didn't expect so quickly. O.O So, last chance for words? Shall we say bon voyage to Zetaboards, or stick around? |

xD Well, okay then. I'll leave this open for more comments and such, but I'm near convinced that I want to move. I'll probably set a date to open it and whatnot. at the moment, I'm trying to get things sorted. And on a note of that converter, I may join the forum and see if they can develop a forumer converter. I mean, if we can get our old Dashing posts as well, then how freakin' sweet would that be? |

Firestrife could use a bug of his to copy all of the posts, forums, etc. You can try to contact him to ask him about it.  I think MyBB or PhpBB would be the best move. Good luck with the move!

Im at the point where I would like to see Dashing move. Especially since it stopped saying 'Today' and 'Yesterday' and started showing seconds in posts and threads. >_> |
