The smooth metal beneath the pads of her fingers comforted her much more than was to be expected, bringing the object closer to her face and letting the cold surface connect with her pale forehead. A forest of black lashes fluttered and brushed the very tip of the little bauble, the slightest breath slipping from her parted lips fogging the stained-glass surface.

In this mire of stillness and sorrow, Aqua found this one comfort. The presence of the star-shaped trinket in her hands, the gentle thrumming of energy it emitted when held close to her ear. The softest smile would surface onto her mouth, which was often pressed into a thin, determined line. Her eyes, typically devoid of emotion, would thaw into their warm, compassionate sapphire that once took up her irises.

Aqua sat on the cold, sandy ground, her left leg stretched out with a slight incline and her right bent close to her chest, with one elbow resting upon her knee. The hand that attached to that elbow held the precious little trinket, sometimes the only thing that barred her from letting herself sink into this endless darkness.

It wasn’t the Wayfinder itself that stopped her. It was the fact that Ven would be forever trapped in that lonely room she placed him in for the rest of eternity, never to be found or remembered again. Or the assurance that one day she would see Terra once again, as himself, with his soft mahogany hair and intense cobalt eyes that she had loved so much. Perhaps it could even be the slightest notion, the tiniest hint, that her tragically murdered Master still lived in some shape or form.

She flinched visibly as memories rushed back in a powerful eddy of scenes and snippets of voices. “Aqua, look, try this stance. You are smaller than Terra, and thus his posture would not fit you.” Master Eraqus’s voice, quickly matched with his kind smile and warm hands, gently arranging her fingers into a tighter grip on the training Keyblade, moving her shoulders and tapping her back as a signal to straighten it. Not too long afterwards, Aqua stood in her battle stance, the one she still used to the very day.

Another flash of a younger Terra, grinning goofily at her as she gracefully dodged one of his blunt attacks. She had stuck her tongue out playfully, before her playmate knocked her legs out from beneath her and thus one the mock battle again. The time where she taught Ventus Fire Surge, giggling as she ducked away from the searing wheels of flame. He frowned at her apologetically, but she affectionately ruffled his flaxen hair and continued with the lesson.

A sharp breath burst from Aqua’s lungs as the waves of reminiscing ceased to roll mercilessly over her. She pulled her left leg closer and wrapped her arms around her calves, resting her cheek against the smooth fabric covering her knees. Her prized Wayfinder dangled from her hand, the rough brown cord clenched so tightly in her fist she could feel it burning into her skin. She had long since stopped her self-pitying and her crying, entirely certain that both of those things would not get her anywhere. Searching and searching for the smallest little chink in the darkness’s deep shield would even come to more avail than sitting and feeling sorry for herself.

But it was different then. For she sensed a disturbance in the chilly, harsh blackness of this prison. The waves still lapped greedily at the ebony sands, the moon still glared harshly down at the lone figure of a young lady, but there was something there. A presence, if you will. And there she sat, waiting for whatever it was to make a grander appearance.

And so it did.

With a sharp whooshing sound, a towering rectangular structure loomed on the very shore in which she sat, just a bit out into the water. Possessively the Keyblade Master crammed her little good luck charm into her pocket, and then slowly got to her feet.

The light burned at her night-accustomed eyes, causing a searing pain to ignite behind her sockets. She screwed her eyelids shut, but still an orange tint leaked into the utter darkness. Through a thin line of vision, Aqua managed to walk forward, a hand raised before her face and her knees quivering with anticipation. She had no earthly clue where exactly this would take her, but the assurance that it would be out of this hellish realm spurred her feet into stepping into the painful light.

There was the thinnest sensation of being dropped onto a hard, rough surface, almost like…a road? She had little time to debate it, since immediately after, thoughts and sounds and feelings blurred into the sole, unmistakable, darkness. Only this time, she welcomed it.

Wake up, the house is on fire, and the cat's gone in the dryer!

"Right, I'll be by next week!"

The bell attached to the shop's front door jingled as he closed it, checking behind himself to make sure that his tail wasn't in the way. Which it wasn't as it was curled around his shins loosely. It never hurt to make sure. The blighted thing always seemed to have a mind of it's own. Not that he minded, but sometimes it just wasn't really appropriate. "Alright, let's see what trouble I can get into..." Zidane muttered to himself and pulled out a piece of paper from his back pocket, words scrawled on there in a chaotic mess of scribbles and nonsensical sentences. "Ugh, just what am I supposed to do first?" The blonde boy exasperated. Stupid moogles! Smartest things you'll ever find, but it takes a miracle to put up with them, let alone be able to get any clear and legitimate directions from those tiny stub-like paws of theirs. "Okay, so I just cross this here... Add a word there..." He leaned against the wall nest to the shop's door, using a knee to support the form of the paper as he pulled out a pencil and began writing and erasing, trying to make what little sense he could out of the mess. After a couple minutes of what seemed like futile deciphering, he managed to somewhat figure out a few materials he was required to get. "Great, that's gonna be fun," Zidane muttered as he walked to the edge of the drop in front of the store, where it was rumored that a fat connoisseur of sorts would stand looking at the entrance to Traverse Town, and leaned forward, grabbing the edge of the abruptly ended wall next to him and craning his neck to look at the other side of town. To what was the dangerous part of town. Where all the Heartless were.

Zidane sighed. Well, he needed to get back into shape. All that walking around as an errand boy was starting to get a little old. "Wait, does that mean I got a promotion?" He asked quizzically, looking back at the piece of paper in his hand. "Whatever, I got paid. I'm getting hungry, and I smell a restaurant- huh?"

There was a woman standing by the lamp post, looking like a lost lamb or puppy or anything else that looked cute and fuzzy. Her hand was raised as though shielding her face from the dim light it produced. "Ah, a newcomer!" Zidane realized with excitement. Though bad for her homeworld, since it was more than likely swallowed up by the Darkness, but great for the society!

"Hey lady!" The boy with the monkey's tail called out and jumped down from his spot. "You're gonna go blind if you stare at it too long," he said with a smile as he approached her. "Welcome to Traverse Town, pretty lady. A new start for the wayward, as the locals like to say. I'm Zidane." A hand was extended to her. "What's your's?"

It was far too bright. The light ignited such a searing pain in the pit of her skull, all she wanted to do was escape it. She found herself wishing for the shielding blanket of darkness again, however shocking that may have sounded. This wasn’t the flood of ethereal warmth that she had grown used to so long ago. This was so much harsher, like a searchlight that shed needles. Agony. She didn’t want this, oh, what she would do to make it stop

When suddenly, it did.

Well, not completely. The blinding light began to fade, and so did the pain, until it was just a dull ache behind her eyes, perplexing but easily dealt with. And the piercing whiteness subsided into a soft, yellowish glow.

Sapphire hues blinked in the first signs of response, armored boots stumbling backwards and her body almost falling to the ground, had she not caught herself on the lamppost. “W-What-” The first word to escape her lips in God knew how long was a little more than a confused rasp. She rubbed at her eyes in an attempt to clear her vision, and gradually her surroundings came into focus. It was night here, just as black as she had remembered from..before, but streetlights illuminated the road to give this place a sort of friendly atmosphere.

The bluenette’s gaze finally settled on a young blond boy, just barely catching his name and his request for hers. She stared at him for a long moment, before straightening to her full height and looking him over with a faintly dazed look in her eyes. It took a while before she could work up the sense to reply and feebly grasp his outstretched hand. “I’m…Aqua.” At the back of her head, her etiquette nagged mildly. “Nice to meet you.” She mumbled. Her hand fell from his, hanging at her side as she eyed the ground numbly.

She was…out. Funny, this wasn’t what she expected. She didn’t really plan on being baffled and bewildered beyond belief, and be greeted by a…monkey boy? in some sort of dark little town that seemed much to quaint when placed beside her former circumstances. There was way too much of a contrast here. This had to be some sort of joke, or a sick, cruel dream, though this one seemed a little exotic to be conjured by her exhausted mind.

This place, hadn’t he said its name was…Traverse Town? A peculiar name, but then again, her own homeworld didn’t have much of a tame title either. She had so many questions, but was clueless as to how to ask them. Aqua settled on simply fixing ‘Zidane’ with a puzzled look. “Do you know…oh, nevermind.” She didn’t really want to question the worlds’ logic in this state; it would only make her headache worse. So she decided to ignore her brain’s pining for answers and just count on this boy to tell her something that revealed what in the hell she was doing here.

Well, this was odd. Very odd indeed. She wasn't acting like he other strays that found themselves here. They were normally frightened, crying, or very very angry. But this woman...she wasn't one of those three emotions. No, it looked more like bewilderment or absolute confusion. Maybe even distortion. Whatever the case may be, it was obvious that she had never really heard or seen Traverse Town. But why? She looked like an explorer, adventurer, etc. from the armor and light clothing she was wearing. More than likely, she had her weapon tucked away in a place where people wouldn't be able to see. This keeping her valuables in a safe place from pickpockets and thieves. Namely those like himself. Zidane's eyes narrowed and his eyes glanced over her quickly. Well, yet again, she was a good head - head and a half taller than him. This woman named Aqua was a very beautiful woman. Bright blue eyes, blue slate hair, and her clothing was nothing at all like he had ever seen. It almost reminded him of what the women on his home world would wear, only Aqua's attire was for more suited for all environments and travel.

"Aqua, eh? That is a name that is well suited for you! It's a pretty name for a pretty lady," Zidane laughed, grinning his suave grin and winking. With a relieved sigh, he took on a more serious expression and began to explain, "If you're looking for someone, they're more than likely here. This is the first stop that everyone makes on their journeys. Everyone here has either lost their home world to the Darkness or were trying to run from it. Or for personal reasons."

That made his expression darken ever so slightly, the remembrance of memories he wished he could forget. At least have gone a different way. The hero was always supposed to get the girl in the end. That's how all good plays go. But his play, his acting wasn't good enough. And he lost his chance. Zidane let out a little sigh at that thought. Damn her and these lingering thoughts. They get in the way of his supreme acting. If he kept thinking like this, then there would be no way in Hell that he'd be able to move on! Let alone pick up the ladies! The genome quickly shook his head and leaned on one hip, a wrist propping up an elbow as his other hand curled into a loose fist and rested on his chin, pressing slightly against his mouth as he frowned in thought. His tail curled and unfurled behind him. What to do with her... Normally, he comforted the newcomers, gave them about 50 munny, and a map before he went on his way to do a job or an errand for the moogles. And it just didn't seem like a good idea to do that now. Something nagged at him to stay with her, if just for a little while. His room in the moogle shop wasn't the biggest, but he still had access to a kitchen, unlike in the hotel where you had to pay for food. And he didn't have that much, considering how much of his pay check went to travel costs. Even going through that portal of theirs still costed him a couple of munnies. With a sigh, Zidane looked back up to Aqua and stood up straight, putting his hands on his hips. "Right then. You're probably hungry. So you can come with me. I have to pick up a few things for dinner, and I can answer whatever questions you have. Or we can go over there and eat there while continuing this conversation. What says you, pretty lady?"

(( lol I'm not sure either. XD I guess flup it as we go along? ))

Aqua eyed Zidane warily, though with not a speck of hostility, just a tired inquisitiveness that clearly stated her questions had not been answered, but she didn’t really care much about them anyhow. Her gaze thawed substantially, however, when she observed his flaxen blond hair, bright eyes, and easy smile. He reminded her so much of Ventus. Except her younger friend had not been quite as…coquettish. Not that she minded much, as he probably meant nothing by it. They had just met, anyway.

The Keyblade wielder tilted her head at the boy, a soft smile lighting up her features, before disappearing as quickly as it arrived. It felt peculiar to smile after she had spent however long so austere in the face of pressing, clinging, smoldering darkness. There wasn’t much beyond doom and gloom in that blasted realm, but this child had managed to brighten her in these first few moments. Maybe the friendly atmosphere of this Traverse Town had affected her, as well.

Surprisingly, this miniature welcoming committee wasn’t too shabby. She soundly appreciated this boy’s efforts in trying to explain to her what exactly had happened, though they were in vain. He thought she had ended up here because she had lost her home, which she could justify. Her confused looks and shell-shocked mannerisms would set off the signals of someone dumped off from their world into another.

However, in a sense, she had been transported from a polar opposite of this place. Though not precisely in the way that Zidane perceived.

The youth’s compliment did not go unnoticed by the blue-haired warrior. Her cheeks warmed slightly and she managed a flustered cough in response, tucking a piece of her hair behind her ear and avoiding his eyes. “Ah…thank you.” Any sort of flattering statement rendered Aqua a stuttering mess, no matter who it was from. Obviously that hadn’t changed. But, as the boy’s expression darkened, so did hers.

“If you’re looking for someone, they’re more than likely here.”

Her voice took on the quality of a hopeful child. “Really?” She whispered. Would that mean…would he be here, as well? Her opinions on his condition had wavered and polarized beyond recognition, though she had hoped and prayed with every fiber of her being that he was alive. As she continued to think on the subject, her hope faded as quickly as it came, however not because she had found evidence stacked against it. The odds were just preposterous in every skewed angle and rotation, so she dismissed the presence of her best friend as she had dismissed so many other revelations and musings as time dragged on.

“Oh…I don’t want to be a burden, if you have other things to do, you should go on about them.” Awkwardly the bluenette rubbed the back of her head. Although…food was an alluring prospect. Or something hot to drink. She had forgotten what warmth had felt like in her silent prison, and these street lamps felt like miniature suns on her skin. Despite herself, she found herself cherishing the feeling.

It mystified her, how base these sensations were and how much she missed them.

sorry if aqua’s a little out of character, she’s still freaked out by all of this happening so suddenly. i promise she’ll be back to her usual stick-in-the-mud self in no time. :P
