Fairies. Fairies dancing in the wind, caressing leaves, peering through windows. No, she reminded herself. They were imps; white imps quite ready to freeze anyone to the bone.
That was the problem with this boarding school. From the brochure it looked perfect. Four-star meals, loose dress codes, soft beds...of course it had all that, but the ads all left out one important detail: anyone outside during the nightly snowstorms would freeze to death.
For all the wonders the school offered, that one trait gave it the feeling of a prison. Eventually the students got used to it, but it always gnawed at their attention from the back of their minds. They couldn't leave. Not alone.

Iris turned her gaze from the window to her laptop. It was playing some music she'd downloaded yesterday. Beth, her older roommate, had suggested she listen to it. My...something Romance. Iris couldn't remember the name of the band, but she knew the current song was called Disenchanted. The beginning of the song made her want to learn piano. Her younger roommate, Chelsea, would be more than happy to teach her if either of them had any free time.

As Iris typed the final words of her essay, a clock on the opposite side of the room displayed the numbers 9:26. A new song came from her laptop. This time it played La Vie Boheme from the movie, Rent. She let it play, but scampered off to the bathroom to get ready for bed. She had just enough time to change and brush her teeth before Beth and Chelsea came back from the library.

She couldn't help but look at herself in the mirror. Always the narcissist. She sighed and giggled at the thought. In reality, it was hard not to look at her. Not because of beauty, but because of the sheer abnormality of her. Short, skinny, pale, she was all of those to the extreme. Her skin was hardly six shades from albino and her hair might as well have been thrice bleached. The contours of some of her bones were visible. Her wrist, collar, and hip bones were the most noticeable. As for her height, Iris was four and a half feet tall and proud of it. But as if the rest of her weren't bizarre enough, her eyes were iridescent white. At the moment they looked pale blue-green, but they were only reflecting the colors of her shirt and the paint on the walls.
She played with her reflection for a little longer, imagining herself with her chin-length hair arranged to look like a pair of cat ears and projecting the idea onto the mirror then onto herself. It took a few minutes for her to give up her game and return her hair to its normal relaxed and shaggy style before she finally changed into her pajamas and left the bathroom.

Iris took a little time afterwards to blow out the candles that lit the main room of her dorm. Beth would throw a fit if she found out Iris had been lighting them again. She supposed it was only normal for someone who could control water to be a pyrophobe, but it was still hard to get used to.

Iris heard footsteps come up to the open door. She tried not to pay attention. True, it could be anyone, but creepy things had been happening lately. Students randomly passing out in the halls, power outages, her cell phone didn’t work in certain wings and apparently no one else’s did either. Even the teachers were worried. Mr. Coghill’s history lecture was shaky today, whereas it was generally monotone.
Someone had even said they’d seen a strange, glowing something wandering the dorms. Then again, that someone had been Beth, and Beth knew precisely how easily scared she was.

The footsteps kept coming. Iris told herself it was just Beth and Chelsea coming back from the library.
It wasn’t.

The companion cube could kick Chuck Norris' ass.
Tammie walked quickly, amber eyes searching the dimly lit halls. She didn't like wandering the school at night. Now, though, she had no choice; she'd left her notes in a friend's room and needed to get them so she could finish her paper.

Stupid, stupid, stupid, she berated herself. It was bad enough just wandering all alone for a few doors but this friend was roomed on almost the opposit end of the building. With all the weird things going on, and the rumors -oh, the rumors, worse than the actual happenings- Tammie's fear of going out at night seemed less an odd quirk and more a survival instinct. Only to maintain her high grade point average would she dare ignore that instinct.

Being a fire elemental, she was supposed to be bold and fearless. Like her father. While she had inherited his pyromania this was not the case. She stuttered when ill at ease, which was often, and she would rather follow than lead. She had a short fuse but was good at controling her wild temper, a skill her father lacked. All in all, an unusually quiet mannered flame head.

She could really use some of that fearlessness now. Tammie almost jumped out of her skin when she heard footsteps. Taking stock of her surroundings she realized she was only halfway to her destination. It's just a student, she told herself, wiping her palms on her turtle neck to calm herself. It's not anything trying to eat you, it's just another nice, friendly kid like you.

Tammie glanced over her shoulder and saw nothing. She began to twist a lock of long, dark red hair around her finger nervously. She looked behind her again, saw nothing, and had to quickly let go of her hair before the nervous heat from her hands singed it.

She needed to get out of this hallway. Swallowing thickly Tammie veered to the left and rapped quickly on a door without looking to see where she was. Come on, come on, she thought urgently, biting her nails. They were already red and angry from previous occasions.

Iris froze when she heard knocking. The door had to be answered, but what if...

"It's just one of Beth's friends," she told herself. "It isn't a creep, it's just somebody looking Beth."

She slowly crept up to the door, brandishing a candlestick she grabbed off of a dresser on the way. Almost there. She plastered herself against the wall and shuffled the rest of the way.

"Just Beth's friend. Not a boogey man."

Iris cautiously poked her head out of the door to see...
Another student chomping on her nails. She relaxed and stepped away from the wall, then walked out completely into the doorway forgetting about the candlestick in her hand.

"Hullo."

- and while Tammie wasn't a boogey, there was someone in the hall who could be considered as close to one as the school had registered. Geist, as he was known, appeared to be the grim reaper, though he lacked the skull or bony fingers. Instead, his hands were covered in thin black gloves with rubber gripping on the palms and fingertips. The face under the hood was a flat black egg-shape, as if someone had taken a piece of unmarked obsidian, smoothed it to shape, then sanded one side flat.

No footsteps could be heard, nor did his long black robe swish as if the wearer were walking. Occasionally, footsteps could be heard, but they rarely matched the surface he was moving over. On carpet, he might sound like he was walking in hard-soled shoes on floorboards. On concrete or tile or wood, he might sound like he was walking through tall grass. The general consensus was that the footsteps were either a poor attempt at seeming 'normal' or deliberately fake. But rumours are what they are, and there didn't seem to be any definitive answers about what Geist was.

He slid silently down the hall, having stopped making his footstep noises now. He stopped slightly up the hall from Tammie and Iris. There was a click like an old audio cassette player being set to play. A hiss suddenly followed, as if the cassette had recorded silence and the volume on the player set too high. Within the hiss, a voice whispered just loud enough to be heard.

"Isn't it a bit late for socialising, ladies?" Asked the whispered voice, before a click, then silence.

Tammie looked down at the other girl with wide eyes. "H-hi," she squeaked, her gaze lingering on the candlestick before she managed to force it back up to her face. "I'm sorry to b-bother you, but I um, I..." She paused, not knowing if she should lie or tell the truth. People thought she was odd enough, so she decided to lie. "I g-got um, l-l-lost?" She smiled nervously, smoothing her hands over her sweater. "O-or if you're busy," here her eyes wandered back to the candlestick. "I can, I c-can ask s-s-someone e-else."

She looked around the hallway and nearly jumped out of her skin when she saw Geist there. She made a noise somewhere between a squeak and a hiccup. "Don't d-d-d-do that," Tammie scolded. She crossed her arms and frowned marginally, slightly annoyed. People wondered why she didn't go out at night, well, there were lots of things that could happen in the dark, being sneaked up on by other students among them. She always took it personally, for good reason most of the time. Everyone claimed it was accidental but it happened so often that it was statistically imporbable.

"Sure, yeah. Come in."

Iris followed Tammie's line of sight until her eyes fell upon Geist. She blinked, shivered, then ducked back inside her room with a terrified squeak. After a few moments, she regained a bit of her composure and shuffled closer to the door, trying to look out into the hallway without being seen. She clenched the candlestick tightly and looked up at Tammie to avoid speaking to the creep directly.

"Wh...who is that?"

The click and hiss signalled Geist's speech before he made it.
"I apologise," He said to Tammie, before an ever so slight angle adjustment of his head aimed his 'face' at Iris, "I am Geist. Are you two okay? It is not safe to be roaming the halls so late. If you are not harmed, the teachers catching you is perhaps just as dangerous. I am a hall monitor if you need to go anywhere," Geist told the pair. He had not always been a hall monitor, but given the recent problems, having someone who was not technically alive seemed a safer option for one. He didn't mind the duty, since he didn't sleep anyway.

Tammie blinked at him. Hall moniter? She hadn't realized they had one at night. She looked uncertainly Ivy before her eyes traveled back to Geist, resting on what she assumed would have been his face if he had one. She couldn't look there for very long before she had to look away again. It was too creepy for her.

"I-I, well, I," she began, trying to figure out what to do. Should she continue on her quest for her notes or just head back to her room? Tammie peeked at Geist's face again. "I n-n-need to get my notes from a f-friend," she stuttered at last. She hoped her father appreciated just how much trouble she was willing to go through for her near perfect grade.

Click. Hiss. "I recommend you get them now, then. I will accompany you until you are back in your dorm. The school seems quite different at night and it is for your own comfort that you be escorted if out past curfew. I will wait until you're ready to leave." Hiss. Click.

Geist stood perfectly still, as if he were a robed statue which, looking at his face seemed incredibly likely.

Iris shuffled a little closer to the door frame and turned her head slightly towards Geist, still shivering.

"B...but how do we know you're not one of the c-creeps that's been wandering around?"

Sure, the question could be considered offensive, but there were strange things wandering around. This...person? was certainly strange, and certainly knew it, and he was wandering the halls. And to top it all off, Iris had never seen him before. She couldn't imagine forgetting someone who looked that creepy.

"Creep, yes. A creep you have to worry about? I would certainly say not. He wanders the halls quite often watching for things that go bump in the night. Hell, he is the onyl thing creepier than me that wanders the halls at night." Alex suddenly spoke up from the shadows, his deep voice echoing a little in the silent halls. It had been his footsteps that were heard by Tammie earlier, wandering aimlessly in the halls. His comment about being creepy was more humor than serious, as there wasn't much anything creepy about him. He was about 6 feet tall, around 165 pounds and was in decent shape. His short cut jet black hair and pale skin were just about the only ghostly things about him. Noone knew what color his eyes are, as they are always hidden behind his dark sunglasses, or hidden in the night when he takes them off to see. He controlled "darkness." It was actually solid dark energy, but when he uses it it just apeared as though there was no light in the area it takes up. Thanks to this power he can see in the dark pretty clearly, but his eyes were incredibly sensitive to light, causing him to always wear dark sunglasses during the daytime. The dark was his comfort zone and was where his powers were more useful. since his powers made him safer at night, he wandered the halls at night often, hiding in a shroud of darkness anytime someone would come near. He had been offered a moniter job, but turned it down as he occationally needed sleep, unlike Geist.

"So how goes the patrol my ghostly friend? This little gathering is the only activity I've seen at night in a while."

Hiss.

"Thankyou for the back-handed assurance, Alex," whispered Geist, "and things are well. The curfew is doing its job and keeping everyone safe. I have sensed something- that should not be here- on occasion, but it flees when it realises I am on to it. Even I haven't been able to keep up with it. So long as it fears me, anyone in my presence is safe."

Hiss.
