What? Those NPCS aren't killed in one magically well placed hit? And you say all those weapons and shit they use can actually be picked up? Holy flying monkeys, batman! Realism is actually allowed?

Yup, that's right. My favorite idea: Getting items from NPCs. Meaning not purchasing them. Yes, that's right. Now hold up there, quickdraw. Don't jump the gun on me just yet, I gots some 'splainin' to do.

A'ight. So. We all know the whole... 5000 gold for a spell that's really not that great is a pain. It kinda kills the drive to make quality posts, and builds a desire to just.. get a post out as fast as possible. Not only that, we all know NPCs aren't really important. But does that mean they shouldn't be a challenge? I mean, c'mon people... How often do you see one fellow who's just a simple fellow suddenly take on 50 of the meanest bandits around, and come out unharmed? It's just not likely to happen outside of hollywood. So how about we put away our wonderful "I'm stronger than you just 'cause I control you" attitudes, and look at the big picture. Is it fun to just be able to slaughter hundreds with nothing but a thought? Yes. But it also gets boring. There's no challenge, no drive to improve, nothing making the fight any more fun than a 25 year old expert boxer taking on a 7 year old fat kid! Sure, there's the fun of being reminded you're tough, but honestly, are you really when facing opponents that stand no chance at all?

A lot of excuses I've heard in my time of forum roleplaying are rather entertaining. Shall I list a few off? I think I shall.

  • "I'm a demon, so normal people stand no chance against me."
Yes, not exact wording, but that's the jist of it. Now let's look at this closely. Hmm. Yes, yes. This is a true statement. But to be honest, would they stand there and accept a beating? Hell no. And they wouldn't line up to be slaughtered, either. So why do people like this? Because, well, to tell you the truth, it's a reason that can be held up in an argument. But it's an easily won one. There are many ways an average person can become extraordinary in a life threatening situation. Do you ever see anything like this? Hell no, you see NPC after NPC fall.
  • "These enemies are gonna be tough! Some of us may die!"
Oh yes, this isn't much of an excuse and more of a statement, but after watching this for a bit, I noticed that the situation was quite the opposite. Everyone killed the enemies easily. No one came near death. Everyone lived nearly scratchless. To top it all off, the person who said this went into a god-like state and killed them all off. Sure, he came out with every bone in his body broken, but oh lawd, he can't die!! Yeah. Tough enemies. Uh huh. May die. Yeah, right.
  • "My character's been alive for xxx years/millenia/centuries/whateverthefuckyouwannacallit"
Improvized wording for the win. Yeah, I've heard this way too many times to count. Age does not define power. A 1,000 year old elf can still be bested by a 20 year old human. So keep tryin' thar, spunky. Just 'cause you's mistah ageless don't mean you's mistah powah. Just means you old.
  • "I worked hard for all my equipment, so I should be given the power with it!"
Less of a quote and more of a judgement based off personality. Oh yes. You worked hard. You sat there with someone else and just posted every 15 minutes. Without any proper knowledge of the english language. Or how to properly construct a damn sentence. And without even trying to figure out a good way to fight. Yes. You're a big badass now. Now, if you look closely at this type, they usually portray superiority complexes. They're better than you. Why? Because they have more time to waste usually posting crap to get some big shiny object. To be honest, my equipment piles are just for show. To fulfill a purpose, moreso than make my characters the toughest of the tough. When I want that title, I get down to good old fashion real combat. I take on a challenging opponent, and I either come out on top, or I learn and get better. I can't count the times I've fought someone, and had them call on me for godmodding simply because I found a way to avoid their flashy shit.
  • "I'm a god!"
Okay, so maybe this one is hard to argue. Partially why I prefer NPC gods that no one ever meets. Either way, however... I understand gods and goddesses are tough bitches to fight. But y'know... They do they hurt. And I'm not just meaning by other "indestructible" beings. Look at most fantasy settings. Either the deities never show up.... Or eventually one does die. Or comes close to it in some other fashion than an excessive ritual or another deity. So yeah. You're a god. Big fuckin' deal. I can kinda see you're side... but only to an extent. Start killin' army after army without rest, and I'll have to complain.

I'll stop my list there for now. I'm sure you get the idea. So how about we just move on, eh?

I don't like people being able to just pick up an item some random NPC is holding and be able to just use it. Even if for only one topic, because if you give people that right, eventually there'll be someone who sees the loophole in this... You don't have to buy anything, you can just have an NPC walk by who just happens to be carrying it. Easily overpower them through means of a flick and then you get whatever you want. For that topic only, sure, but next topic just rinse and repeat. So no, you can't do that.

BUT! I do think it's understandable that occasionally people get a little something for their effort in taking out an NPC (Yes. I said effort. After my long rant you probably don't understand, but just listen. Or read. Don't judge me!), so how about here and there someone gets to keep that nifty sword that guard they just killed was holding. Well, if we just left it at that, no one would work for their stuff. Where's the fun in that? So, I have a few ideas.

  • First up is the good old fashion request method. They ask for an admin or staff member to step in and take over the NPC, and then they might get something out of it. A random staff would jump onto an NPC account and take over.
Flaw(s): Well, this would bring about a long list of requests. Everyone would want this, because it seems like an easy way to get free shit.
  • Second! Randomization. There would be an NPC account, and a staff member would jump on it. Some random topic becomes the target. The NPC person jumps in just as the user is about to just outright kill an NPC, and suddenly that simple guard that the user thought they could kill in one cut avoids the death blow, and fights back, just baffling the user. In the end, after a heated battle, if the user wins, they might get a cool item from it!
Flaw(s): Naturally this means if someone wants a free item and they see someone else getting this, they'll call favoritism and bitch a whole shitload. Oh yeah, we all love that.

Well, yeah, that's about it. GIVE IDEAS IF YOU CAN THINK OF ANY!!!

Alrighty. So. As you noticed above in my ranting, I do enjoy those who think they're big ol' badasses just 'cause they can kick an NPC's ass. I just love them. Anyways, enough with the sarcasm. I'd like to give people who actually put their character through effort a li'l somethin', but I know if I do people will just fake it. They won't give a chance of death against an NPC, simply put on a show. 20 posts or 1 long post of nonsense ending with them prevailing and even with gaping wounds and a long drawn out battle behind them, they're magically full of energy and are still full of gallons of blood. Yeah. So I know this dream of mine is most likely not going to become a reality. BUT! I have a request anyways. If anyone can think of a way to make this possible, let me know. I'm open to ideas, ;]

If anyone has any other ideas on better systems, let me know.
Alright, before anyone yells at me for my rant earlier in this topic, I'ma just say somethin'. If you're one of the people I listed, you either don't agree with my opinion, or you don't agree with me making it public knowledge that you're full of shit. I get that. If I was one of them and knew it, I wouldn't be happy with it bein' brought up either. Go ahead and bitch, though. I could use some laughs ;] Thank you.
