National Holiday Announced for Independence Day

Posted Image

Alban Ó Cairre gave his weekly radio address last night, choosing that opportunity to announce for the twentieth year in a row a national holiday for all workers on Independence Day, April 20th. April 20th is an important date in Saltusian history, marking the completion of the War of Southern Aggression and the garauntee of sovereignty for the former colony, and the day of the popular revolt twenty-four years ago that ended the corrupt oligarchy headed by former President Gerard Mac'Carthy, bringing Ó Cairre to power.

"It is as important today as ever to recognize the achievement of our fathers in liberating our homeland from the chains that repressed them, be they foreign or domestic. We have begun a tradition, a tradition I plan to continue, and giving a full national holiday on this day."

Hardly unexpected, the celebrations will be marked with parades and other similar festivities, in every major city across the country. Ó Cairre announced plans to celebrate in Ealdcaester among the people, at the popular Carnival held every year the weekend prior to Independence Day.

Ó Cairre introduced the measure establishing this year's holiday in the National Assembly this morning. It passed, unanimously.

In the Vatican city, the Pope has agreed to appear in Saltusland this year, on Independence Day. He will visit Pitterweem Our Mother of Mercy Cathedral, the largest cathedral on Australmaria, built in 1854. The visit has been planned for many years, and extra ferry lines have been established from Iverness and Ealdcaester to ensure that as many people as possible get to witness the Papal visit. This is the first Papal visit to Saltusland.

Ealdcaester Celebrations Underway

Posted Image

As April 20th celebrations begin in earnest this evening across the country, Ealdcaester has been in a festive mood since the arrival of Pope Pius XII this morning. Alban Ó Cairre greeted the Pope personally on his arrival, and a profession carried the two into the center of the city, through thousands of faithful worshipers who had come to greet the Catholic leader. The Pope, pictured above, led a noon mass in the public square outside the Presidential Palace. Ó Cairre stood behind him and worshiped alongside the crowd.

This is the first visit by a Pope to Saltusland in history. The Integralist administration is highly Catholic, and has been pressuring the Papacy to visit for years. This is a major diplomatic triumph for the Ó Cairre cabinet, one that strengthens their already powerful grasp over the minds and hearts of the Saltusian people.

As celebrations begin around the country, it is with certainty that the Pope's radio address to the nation will be a major feature. Amid the festivities, radio centers are being established already to tune in at 9:00 pm.

The Civil Protection Authority would like to remind citizens to be safe tonight, and avoid boorish behavior that reflects in ill taste on our national character. Police will not be lenient on public drunkenness because of the festivities.

Jacob MacÀidh Speaks Out; Calls Saltusian Navy "Pathetic"

Minister of Defense Jacob MacÀidh gave a speech today to the graduating class of Pitterweem Naval Academy, where he called on the young men to strengthen their minds, because "the equipment you will be using is, frankly, pathetic." The aging Saltusian fleet, largely ignored by the Integralist administration in favor of spending on the air force, has been criticized publicly by MacÀidh on several occasions. "Most, if not all, of you here today will go on to serve on ships older than yourselves. Some may serve on ships that were put in service when your father was a child. You must be cunning, and courageous, for you will win no fight with your equipment, but rather your valor and strength."

"The ships are obsolete. Even our latest battleship is a joke, and I say this as an adviser to the President. I will not censor my words and fail my duty," he said to reporters who questioned him on the incident that evening. "The global naval arms race only highlights the deficiencies of our navy. One of our oldest ships was outclassed even at its construction, in 1869. It nears its seventy-first birthday this year.

We are not saved by our investment into our air force earlier this decade, either. Our air force is dependent on old Idusian biplanes, which have years ago been outclassed in every conceivable way by the aerospace community." MacÀidh has given many speeches demanding an increase in the money that funds the Armed Forces, and a major government campaign to modernize the military. "As it stands, I can only hope diplomacy triumphs in any conflict we may find ourselves."

President Alban Ó Cairre has made no comment as of this moment.

Idusian Delegation Arrives in Ealdcaester

Posted Image

An Idusian delegation has arrived in Little Harbor, just north of Ealdcaester, earlier this day, to meet with the Saltusian government on an undisclosed matter. The arriving flotilla, pictured above, entertained a crowd of hundreds with an impressive display of pyrotechnic fireworks this morning that could be seen in Ealdcaester proper, twelve kilometers away. Sources within the Foreign Ministry state this this meeting is one of several meetings planned over the next year that may signal a new diplomatic partnership for Saltusland.

The purposes of the visit are as yet unknown, but given the historical precedent of military cooperation and the current naval arms race, many newsmen across the country believe a naval partnership will be discussed with the Kingdom. It is reported that Defense Minister Jacob MacÀidh left his home in Aberdeen on the North Line Rail to Ealdcaester late last night, and has been in unavailable at his office this day.

Creamhain's office has released a small statement regarding the Idusian arrival, but it said little about the purpose of the visit or even the composition of the foreign delegation: It is with honor that we celebrate the arrival of a diplomatic mission from our brethren in the Holy Kingdom to speak with our government on matters relating to the state of the globe. We hope that all Saltusians will show our guests the greatest respect and hospitality during their visit to our beautiful country.

Saltusland and Idus have been military partners for the past seven years. Saltusland is currently deploying experimental aircraft on behalf of Idus. The Idusian embassy in Ealdcaester has not returned any requests for comment on this matter.

Editorial by President Ó Cairre: "Our Future"

I take to the pen on this day to write a message to the peoples of Saltusland about where our state in heading over the next few years. Before I begin on that, however, I would like to take a moment to note where we are.

It is no secret that these are tough economic times for us all, and the government would like to tell you that we recognize and realize your plight. We are doing everything in our power to ensure that employment is of no concern for you, and that you will continue to be able to provide for your family's needs. The State Employment Administration has been working hard, and we are proud that unemployment has recently dipped below the rate at the date of the commencement of these tough times. We are doing better than we were five years ago. More men today have sustainable jobs than before. The vast improvements we have made to the state infrastructure is a testement to that, whether it is the Transcontinental Rail Line that now connects west and east like never before, the impressive Casmyn Dam on the Majestic Minor tributary, providing electricity to Iverness and the surrounding country, some places which have had unavailable until now, or even the undergoing expansion of road infrastructure through the State Pikeway System.

Nonetheless, we recognize that hunger remains an issue for many, especially in rural areas. These infrastructure developments, however, will make transport more efficient and make proper sustainability in these communities a reality, regardless of local harvests. For now, the Third Army Corps has done as astounding job in ensuring that outright starvation is not a horror that must be endured. I recommend any interested in contributing to the effort to enlist - you will help your family with the income you send home, and serve to preserve the welfare of your less fortunate countrymen.

Do not let these economic hardships dwindle any hope that recovery is impossible. We will recover. Future plans include developing the vast proven petroleum reserves in the North Sea, which will ensure wealth on levels previously unknown. These vast resources we possess, however, will be the target of much envy. Envy is magnified in times of hardship, into hate. And hate by foreign states is the first act of war.

We are protected today only by the inability of others to act. They too, however, will one day recover, and as the naval arms race continues to grow, this concern becomes ever more contemporary. Saltusland must ensure that it has the strength to defend its wealth from those who would not hesitate at taking it.

This is why I write, today. I would like to announce the beginning of a new partnership with my, and our, old friend, Constantine XII of the Idusian Kingdom. The partnership of the last decade with the Idusian air force will be replicated, and closer military ties will be established. A first symbol of this new alliance is the opening of the Kione-keayn Island Harbor Facility, a military base that will be jointly shared by the Saltusian and Idusian navies. This is a symbol of our future, as a state.

We are pursuing closer ties with the Idusians. The Idusians have long been our friends, and are gracious hosts to our very good friend, Pope Pius XII. Indeed, the Catholic community today must stand strong to preserve its sovereignty in the face of godless communism and their friendship with the suspect Oyashimans. We are warming our friendships with the Vexian Teutonists, our brothers in faith and politics, and with our Catholic brothers in Jaman. Now, more than ever, Saltusland must stand next to its heritage in a relationship of mutual love and cooperation. We must defend ourselves from those imperialists, from all countries, who would take what is not their own; to take advantage of any sign of weakness.

This is our future, friends and countrymen. It is one which we must be strong enough to attain and hold. It is in this direction our fatherland turns.

God bless you all,

Alban, servant of Saltusland.

SEAT Opens Doors: Factory at Aberdeen produces first Saltusian car

The Eastern Saltusian Automobile Tradegroup, or SEAT, produced its first car at 8:09 a.m. today in Aberdeen; the first automobile produced in Saltusland, and the realization of two years of investment by the government in diversifying national industrial production to modern industries. SEAT opened its doors at Aberdeen today to a crowd of journalists and government representatives. Vice-Deputy Interior Minister Alistair Cullem cut the ribbon himself, and shook hands with workers as they punched in for their first day. The first car was produced an hour and nine minutes later, showcasing a revolutionary assembly line with the latest technological innovations.

A similar factory will open tomorrow in Iverness, and on Wednesday in Sylesbrig. The factory at Iverness is huge, and hires almost 7,000 workers, almost triple the numbers at Aberdeen and Sylesbrig, and is promoted by the government as an active response to the lagging economy in the area, still the poorest developed major region of Saltusland.

The SEAT 201 is a sleek, modern vehicle, that exudes elegance. It is affordable, especially under the modest payment plan offered by both SEAT and government lenders. A dealership is open in every city, awaiting the many eager customers. Cheaper than import cars, government finance analysts are expecting a large national demand to turn this into a positive national investment within two years. The surge in industries that cater to vehicle is furthermore expected to help surge the Saltusian economy out of the current malaise permanently.

Stunning Hat Trick by Macy Brew Clinches Saltusian Victory

EALDCAESTER, Saltusland: Macy Brew, striker for the Saltusian national team, gave a great performance few would have expected of him. While he has proven his value as a wingman in league play for the Abernathy Sports Club, coach Andrew Macmillan put him in as a striking forward, a move many decried weeks ago as foolish. It seems that it is Macmillan, however, who will enjoy the last laugh in that debate, Brew's performance putting beyond all doubt that he is among the most capable players in the Saltusian leagues. It is with little doubt that Abernathy SC will re-evaluate the role he plays on their roster, and it is not beyond imagination that we may see more of Mr. Brew in the coming season, in ways reflective of his performance at this cup.

The World Cup has been a great boon for Saltusian economics, and unemployment in World Cup hosting cities is very low, as tourists increase demand for workers in the service and hospitality industries. The grave economic situation in these areas seen before the Cup is now unknown, and Bonampak especially has enjoyed a resurgence in wealth not seen since its peak in the late 1890s as a boom town built around the extensive gold mines in the area.

The Mayan Peoples also performed well, managing to secure a victory over Oyashima thanks in no small part to an early goal by wingman Kalan Ah Uuc Ticab, the league leader in 2009 for most goals scored. He was offered a spot on the national team, which he turned down to play for the Mayans. He plays for Ealdcaester during regular season play, and is a known figure in the city. Although he, at 36, has begun to think of retirement, in a press speech given after the victory he alluded to coming back one more time for Central F.C., one of three clubs in the capital city.
