I like medieval, personally. Futuristic is a nice change of pace however.

Quests that actually take you places. Levelling system with skills.

Setting: How about - instead of "post-apocalyptic" --- simu-apocalyptic? I.e. DURING the apocalyptic state that comes before the whole slew of post-apoca stories out there.

Madness!

Holy shit this totally fits with my idea of having the players be monsters instead of humans. Most RPGs have you go on an adventure and defeat monsters and stuff, well...the monsters are striking back.

POSTING YEARS LATER!

Well based on my gaming experience you need to make it not so repetitive. The "missions" of NA were annoying. You shouldn't need to sit through the same matches over and over and over to get characters to make a viable team. Make getting a viable team easier and give those who take time to do missions rewards, perhaps even outside the scope of simply characters. And make the the missions more interesting, make them involve things other than a goddamn checklist.

POST BY AN UNEXPECTED USER! (ZOMG BETRAYER IS HERE)

Obviously whatever I was going for here never happened, but uh...there is definitely a market for an Arena-like game on mobile devices (Android, iPhone, Windows Phone 7/8). It could actually make some money, I think. Technology-wise, HTML5 is the way to go.

As far as I know, no "official" Arena game has been optimized for mobile devices. People have been making due by using the standard Flash version, but Flash support is disappearing from mobile devices as other alternatives like HTML5 take over so that may cease to be an option in the near future. I think a turn-based strategy game like Naruto/Soul Arena that is heavily centered on community and optimized for mobile devices is definitely an underutilized market.
