Is it the rhythm, the lyrics, the notes, the artists expression? What makes music appeal to us?

Consequently, what makes bad music bad?

I personally view good music, as music done for the love of music.
Any level of talent and knowledge of musical theory is just a bonus.

I think it's a combination of all of the elements you mentioned, but also of how those elements interact with an individual's personal mindset, thought processes, and general attitude towards life. I don't know much about what goes into making music, but I think if there were any one element or set formula that made music "good" or "bad," we wouldn't have nearly the variety of it that we do today. Different people enjoy different types of music, so I think that logically, determining what is "good" would have to come down to how the various elements of music interact with the intricacies of each individual's mind.

Some people (such as myself) enjoy a wide variety of genres, since these songs interact with diverse aspects of their personalities. For example, I prefer optimistic songs with good beats, though I also sometimes enjoy listening to more serious, reflective pieces. Both appeal to facets of my personality, and I enjoy these types of music because they speak directly to such parts of my mind. I can do more than just listen - I can relate to that music, and better shape my thoughts about the world by immersing myself within it.

By the way, a couple examples to reflect the diversity of what I listen to:

The Wings of Principle

TemPoison (might need to refresh to listen to this one)

Sleepy Head

EDIT: Yay, 444 posts! : goofy

I love DnB because of the throbbing bass lines and the ecletic rhythms that make you just want to dance. Something you can throw your whole body into that just gets you wrapped up in the music.

I love certain classical pieces or movie soundtracks because, since most lack lyrics, they allow you to tell your own story by projecting your thoughts onto the music.

I love mod and ska because its just got a great feel to it, these people weren't plastic, they were just having great fun laughing about with saxes and stuff.

Different genres for different reasons, I guess :P

I don't think good music can be defined

Its just to be appreciated and learned from. Bad music is revolting.

So Waves, you think that good music can't be defined, but bad music can, and it's defined as revolting? That seems a tad hypocritical.

I 'gree with Sory, it is a combination of basically every element of music as well as our own personal preference.

For me personally the most important thing is that it has direction and character, otherwise it's pretty much nothing more than a bunch of notes. =\

It's not hypocritical at all. The same could be said about food, I really love toast, and I have no idea why. Can't stand beets, I think they're revolting, yet I don't know why.

ITS LIKE THAT : angry

not at all. good music does not have specific characteristics but there ARE specific things that make music bad. there is also lots of music that is neither good nor bad.
