Though I'm not too crazy about some stuff that iGear has put out which directly infringes on what Hasbro does, I do like when a 3rd party company delivers what Hasbro/Takara can't or is not allowed to. In this case I was disappointed years ago to hear the folks at VWAG ordered Hasbro/Takara to cease use of their beloved VW bug as an alt form for any and all incarnations of Bumblebee. I know I'm a bit more stubborn on this than most folks, but to me that was just ridiculous as the name Bumblebee seems to imply "Little Yellow Bug." (Yellow being optional, not so much the bug part.) So I was browsing BBTS when I came across something from iGear to help ease the blues on this matter. Officially only named "Bug01" and Bug02," these are actually retooled versions of the Legends class Bumblebee. These guys ain't cheap either, so I realize they may not be for everyone. ![]() ![]() They sell for about 17 bucks each or 34 for the pair. I had to have the pair of course. The good: FINALLY a new VW bug version of Bumblebee! To me the alt mode is important here because of the name. They also kept the G1 cartoon/comic head sculpt which flatters these figures really nicely. As someone else pointed out to me, the vehicle form seems based on the Matchbox 1962 VW beetle mold, with perhaps a few creative differences: ![]() The bad: Same posability and articulation issues that the rest of the legends class suffers from. Limited arm movement and for a cheaper price this may not matter so much, but these babies are pretty spendy for that to be an issue. Still, I expected as much but other potential buyers may want to bear this in mind when deciding if it's worth their money. To me it doesn't make me regret buying them in the slightest. The ugly: The price tag is kind of painful, but I also realize that short run customs like these may be harder to make money from so I digress. Available from Big Bad Toy Store at the moment. |
