It's My Job

A house is built by wisdom, and it is established by understanding (Proverbs 24:3)

Ahhh. Peace. It was early - not a sound in the house. I stretched slowly, savoring every quiet moment, warm and cozy under the covers. I thought about the day ahead, smiling as I remembered, "Oh yeah, the first day of spring break." I'd promised Tifany and Abby sunshine sandwiches for breakfast. We'd talked about going to the zoo and they were excited. Joe was home the next day, and we were going fishing. how fortunate could one woman be?

I hadn't always felt this way. I used to dread school breaks and vacations. All I could think about was how upset my routine was going to be. In the summer I'd signed my girls up for day camps, summer school, Vacation Bible School - whatever was going on at the time. Then, I counted the days for school to begin.

I have Barbara Bush to thank for getting me on the right track. She once said, "You have two choices in life. You can like it or not. I chose to like it." And just what is my life? The best job in the world. I'm a mom.

Lord, thank You fo rthis current experience of peace. This respite is good for all of us. You remind me that foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child (sometimes moms too), but the good news is that my kids are in training. What lies in their future encourages me to be a vibrant parent in the present. My goal is to show them how to have hearts to serve You. I'm looking forward to the restful days ahead.

I rolled out of bed and shuffled down the hall to their bedrooms. "Come on, sleepy heads. Time to get up. You're our lunch makers today while I fix breakfast. It's a beautiful day and we don't want to be late."

A busy mom can look at school breaks as interferences or opportunities. The Bible tells us to rest, refresh and occasionally seek a quiet place. Nurturing days at home can make memories that will last a lifetime. Look at the big picture and decide that your job as an "investment specialist" is touching tomorrow with your children's todays.

Steps of Faith
Father, thank You for my children. Give me wisdom to nurture these treasures, and remind me to appreciate time at home with them.
