Stuffed Hearts

Gather your cherubs for a little Valentine’s Day fun. This heartfelt craft is a great way for you and your darlings to share love and affection. Creating these colorful hearts with your kids will be extra-special because they’re homemade with love. Add some hugs and kisses for the whole family to enjoy what Valentine’s Day is made of.

Materials

* Large sheets of paper (each at least 2 square feet)
* Tape or stapler
* Markers, crayons, paint, and/or paintbrushes
* Child's blunt-tip safety scissors
* Newspaper, tissue paper, or other paper scraps
* Hole punch and yarn (optional)

Instructions

1. Lay a sheet of paper on top of another and tape or staple the edges together to hold the pieces securely together for the next 2 steps.
2. Draw the outline of a heart on one side of the paper.
3. Cut along the outline to make two cut-outs.
4. Tape or staple the edges of the cut-outs together, leaving an opening along one edge.
5. Let your child color or paint both sides of the heart red, white, and/or pink.
6. Crumple up newspaper and stuff the heart with it.
7. Staple the opening shut.
8. If you like, punch a hole in the top of the shape.
9. Loop yarn through the hole and hang the heart from a wall or ceiling.

Safety

Adult participation needed for use of stapler and hole punch.

I Love You Coupons

Valentine's Day is the perfect time to share some "I Love You" coupons with family and friends. Think of ways your child can help out their family members or friends by suggesting a "task" they can do, such as drawing a picture for Daddy, taking the dog for a walk, helping Mom make breakfast, and so on.

breakfast, and so on.
Materials

* Red, pink, purple, blue and white construction paper
* Heart-shaped cookie cutters or heart-shaped pattern cut from cardboard
* Markers
* Child blunt-tipped safety scissors
* Glitter, stickers, sequins, ribbon and other small decorative items
* Stapler or hole punch and ribbon

Instructions

1. Set out the construction paper, safety scissors and markers on the table, and gather the kids. (Cover the table with newspaper, if necessary.)
2. Let the kids choose a sheet of construction paper.
3. Have them trace around the heart cookie cutter or pattern on the construction paper, using a marker.
4. Have them cut out the heart (help them if they have trouble.)
5. Let them make as many hearts as they like.
6. When they have a nice collection of hearts, ask them to think of ways they can share their love with family members or friends such as drawing a picture for Daddy, taking the dog for a walk, helping Mom make breakfast, and so on.
7. Have the kids draw a picture on the hearts to represent each suggestion.
8. Write the words underneath the pictures to match. ("Play with baby sister," "Take out the garbage" and so on.)
9. Have the kids decorate the hearts.
10. Staple the hearts together or punch a hole at the top of each heart and tie them together with red ribbon.
11. Tell the kids to present the "I Love You" coupons to someone special.
