Tentatively, Sylvia hands out the rest of the water as well to the other members in the room and then (again tentatively) takes the keys, eyes them suspiciously, and moves to unlock the cell.

Jack Reaches for the keys on the other wall. "I don't need the old man's help." he thinks to himself, "I don't need anyone's help."

"Thank you Sylvie, I really needed this." Gratefully, I take some water and sip it slowly. Once the cool rush of liquid hits my parched and dry mouth, I feel an immediate sense of relief. I drink, almost until I can't drink any more. Everything starts to become clearer, and I can think with much more clarity. Turning to Sylvia, I notice she's about to let Jack out. I put my hand out to stop her while saying, "Wait Sylvie. Not yet." I look at Jack. "I'm almost tempted to agree with Al. You're running into situations recklessly, giving no heed to us or even your own well being. If this continues, you'll run headlong toward where those screams came from. You're liable to get us all in danger. So far as I can see, we have three options. First, we leave you in here, with enough food and water to last until we find help. You can be on your own and do what you want, but in a six by ten foot cell. Second, we let you go, and give you a head start to do what you want and we won't have to deal with each other. We'll probably end up finding your body later. Finally, we can cooperate, and you listen to us. We can all help each other that way. I prefer the last option, but we can go with either. Which option would you prefer?"

"now let me ask you this," says jack with a gruff and underused voice, "What exactly have I done to show you that I might kill myself? Was it when i kicked down that door over there?" jack nods his head in the direction of the jail door. "I knew it wasn't booby trapped cause there would have been foot prints in the dust" Now you look back and tell me if there are any prints besides our own. You let me know, and then we can work out this deal."

"He talks! Nice to hear your voice for once." I look back for a moment and say, "You're right. There aren't any footprints besides our own." Then I look down at the floor around the cell door. "Huh. There aren't any footprints besides our own here either." I look at Jack, staring into his eyes, and speak with a condescending tone, my words increasing with speed and intensity as I spoke. "I guess that means that you're not trapped, right? I mean nobody could have replaced the door on that cell to automatically close and lock when someone steps in, because there are no footprints here, right? And nobody could have left new keys right there on the wall, because there are no footprints here, right? And yet here you are, trapped." I break eye contact, and turn to face the door. Speaking in a softer, caring tone I say, "You can see why I would be worried for your life. I don't want anybody to get hurt or killed." I turn again to face him and I say, "So once again I ask, which option do you choose? I really hope you choose to cooperate with us."

"I don't need you to worry about my life. Just get me out of this damn cell, and stay out of my way. If I die, it my fault and i'm not asking anyone to follow me. If they die near me, it won't be my fault. NOW LET ME OUT! THOSE KIDS NEED HELP!" Jack shouts, once again slamming against the bars.

He... wants to save the children? Well at least his intentions are noble. This guy might not be so bad after all. But I can't let him out, he'll get himself killed. With a monotone, almost robotic voice I say, "I'm sorry Jack, I'm afraid I can't do that." Changing to a slightly melancholic tone I say, "For your own safety, we have to leave you in here. I'm sorry." I turn around to leave, facing Sylvia as I walk out. "Come on Sylvie, let's go." After that, I mouth something to her that only she can see. Leaving the room, I check the closed door on the opposite side of the Sheriff's office. I very carefully attempt to open it, making sure that I'm to the side of the door as I do so.

"You can go ahead and leave, just make sure you let me out later. And save the kids." Jack shouts after them.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I'll try not to talk much then. I just wanted to ask about that screaming and junk, 'cause y'all didn't seem to be afraid. N-not that I was scared or anything." Tyson clears his throat. "'Aight, I'll shut up now."

"Thanks Tyson," Alyss says. She continues to sit and wait for the ringing to stop.
