"Uhhh... Totally! No problems here. Bring it on!" He responds nervously. "Just hand me the glass so I can get this over with." |

Al accepts the gun and briefly checks it for ammunition before looking towards the opened room, and the boy walking into it. "Hold the fort here," he says to Luke, slight aggravation in his voice, "I'm going to go make sure that fool doesn't get himself killed." he follows Jack into the jail room, looking the room over as best he can while still keeping a close eye on Jack to be sure he doesn't do anything else rash and foolish. |

Thinking that there must be a better way to check it, but not sure what that would be, she says the only suggestion she can think of, knowing that it would be better to speak up at the moment than possibly lose someone, "Why don't you smell it first or something; see if it smells foul or abnormal." |

Luke takes a quick peek inside the safe. Unfortunately, whoever cracked the lock also took whatever was inside. The skeleton's pockets prove just as fruitless. The book, at least, seems to be not so far gone as to be rendered completely unreadable. It appears to be a sheriff's ledger of crimes. The year 1910 is clearly visible on the first page. The crimes in the book all seem to be mundane in nature: public drunkenness, petty theft, and fraud, among others. Towards the end of the book, however, the handwriting deteriorates, and the subject matter changes drastically. A page lists a crime log like many of the others. The name of the perpetrator is crossed out, written next to it in block letters is "SAVAGE." The crime is listed as rape, and the punishment, death. The next page says simply, "The pox is hard on all of us. I hope to God that Esme doesn't catch it." A few pages of unintelligible scribbles follow. The book ends with another journal entry. "That goddam savage, he cursed us all with this disease. Esme... I did what I had to do to make things right. Now I have to do one last thing. Lord save us all." Al opens the revolver to check for loaded ammunition. Unfortunately, the only thing in it is the casing of the fatal bullet. He then enters the jail area after Jack. There's a table in the far corner, a lone candle seated on top of it, long since burned away, most of the wax melted. The cells seem barren, although one of them seems to contain an odd looking dark patch on the back wall. It's hard to see the exact nature of it in the dim light. Alyss inspects the liquid in her glass. It's colorless and odorless. For all intents and purposes it seems to be water. Tyson fills up his own glass from the same keg and takes a sip. After a moment of nervous trepidation, nothing happens. The liquid, from the first keg at least, seems to be water. |

Jack, ignoring Al, goes and inspects the black thing in the corner. He does't care what he has to do, he will not be the fuck up of the group.

I sit down in the office, making sure nothing happens. As if anything will. This situation is so crazy. It's almost like a dream. But the heat, the thirst, you can't dream that. The thirst. My mind goes to the group. I still can't think of how or why we're all here. I'm confident now that everybody else is as confused as I. At least I know I can trust Al. I've heard of his exploits many times and he is truly a person to be allied with. At first I was wary of Jack, but now it's obvious he's just a lone wolf. He hasn't even said a word to anybody. He's a loose cannon, liable to go off at any time. Anthony seems trustworthy, although I'm not yet sure. I get the feeling Al knows him, so if Al is okay with him he can't be too bad. Alyss is probably a good person to have on my side, she's a master fencer. Her skill last olympics was amazing. The rest.. I don't know them well enough. I hope their search is proving fruitful, my mouth is feels as dry as sand. Shifting my body a little, the sheriff's badge pokes my leg. I pull out the badge, looking at it. It's surprisingly well preserved for being stuck in that hole for more than 100 years. An odd compulsion grabs me, and I pin the badge to my shirt. I don't know why I did that. It just felt right. I start thinking of the book, opening it to read it again. Who could have been the savage? Wasn't savage a slur used for Native Americans back then? I felt bad for the sheriff, that he had been driven to suicide. He probably had to kill Esme because there was no way to save her from the disease. That thought upset me. Esme was my nickname for Esmeralda. Suddenly I realized something. If the sheriff did kill himself, shouldn't the bullet have gone through the trapdoor? Does that mean someone moved him? Who would do that? And why did I see someone wearing the same hat, even though the room was empty? A thought struck me. Was it a ghost? I was never superstitious, never believed in that stuff, but my Esme always talked about the occult. I could almost recite her stories word for word, even today. And all the facts fit. It wouldn't be any stranger than being transported here, in my day clothes, with all these other people. No, the thirst must be getting to me, it couldn't have been a ghost. Still, there are so many questions, with no answers. Hopefully something will come up soon. Spoiler: click to toggle

After seeing that Tyson is unaffected by the liquid that appears to be water, Alyss drinks from her glass until it is empty. She then offers the glass to Anthony. |

Anthony drinks some of the liquid as well, looks around at the group and says "Well, now that we found water, two of us should go and let the other three know and the others should stay behind and make sure nothing happens to it." |
