One of the few enlisted men in history to take the time and effort to make it from Private all the way up to Brigadier General, he retained a hands-on attitude even after he'd been made an officer, often going so far as to join his men in battle when the fighting was at its worst, despite the orders of his superiors to remain behind at command posts. This behavior earned him widespread fame and respect among the men who served under him, but garnered him the disdain of those higher up in rank and of politicians who didn't like his penchant for bringing up the plights of the average soldier and demanding money for supplies their number crunchers said they could do without. Thus it was no surprise to him when he was put out to pasture only a year after his final promotion to Brigadier General. He's lived on his own in a small, comparatively humble manor for the better part of a decade, keeping sharp with a physical fitness regimen of his own devising and keeping in close contact with many of his old buddies in the military, mostly for the companionship but also to keep a watchful eye over those left to command the men formerly under his command, who he still respects and cares for deeply. |
