Jake yelled as 1,000 life points were obliterated from him. This isn't good. Jake said as he knew that most of his monsters were Zombie with Dark attributes. Jake drew a card and wasn't at all happy with it. Luck seems not to dwell on me now. Jake said as he played a monster in defense mode. Thats all I can do for now "Teach." Jake said as play passed to Demitri.

"Silly Jake. I've been teaching since the duel began. Pay attention." Demitri said with a sigh. Jake just wasn't getting it yet...but no matter. He would by the end of the duel, right?

Drawing his next card, the Obelisk looked over his hand for the moment. He knew that one of those face-down back-row cards was a chainable trap. The other was another trap...something that would react when Demitri tried to attack, but his gut told him it wasn't a Torrential or a Mirror.

"Hmmmm..."

Looking over his own hand and field, Demitri decided to take a bit of a risk.

"First, I'll activate the effect of Card of Safe Return. I'm sure I don't need to explain this one to you." he said with a chuckle. "Next, I'll activate Foolish Burial, sending Goblin Zombie straight from my deck to the graveyard. And now comes the fun part..."

As Demitri spoke, a blue flame appeared before them. Slowly growing larger, it gradually took on the form of a monster...the Mezuki that now existed in Demitri's graveyard.

"Remember Mezuki? He's got a trick of his own once he hits the graveyard. Observe...by removing it from play, I can call back a Zombie-Type from the land beyond!" the giant concluded with a grin. The apparition appearing on the field let out a roar, before the flames composing it's body flickered out. As the remaining embers hit the ground, an arm erupted from the earth. Slowly pulling itself from it's resting place, Goblin Zombie awoke from the dead in attack position.

"But we're not done yet!" Demitri exclaimed, as he drew a card. He didn't bother looking at it yet, his focus immediately shifting to another card in his hand.

"Next I'll sacrifice Goblin Zombie to call out someone you should know quite well by now..." He continued, holding up a familiar looking beast clad in midnight black armor. A level six dark...Caius the Shadow Monarch. As the maleficent king hit the field, Jake's face-down monster, a Spirit Reaper, was cast into the void. At once the Osiris was caught in a blast of dark magic, shaving another one thousand life points from his total.

"There will be no time to recover." Demitri warned, as he added Zombie Master to his hand thanks to the sacrificed Goblin's effect. "Caius one. You're up first...take another chunk out of his life points!" he commanded, as Caius let forth a blast of black magic from it's hands. The attack would never reach Jake however, as it was caught by newly materialized Magic Cylinder and redirected towards the beast's master. The large Obelisk took the blast head-on, seemingly unfazed by the impact.

"Hmph. Only a flesh wound." Demitri growled. "Caius two! Attack!"

The second Caius began to gather energy between it's hands, but was interrupted by a sudden gust of wind that swept over the field. Unable to stand against the mighty gale, the Monarch was tossed backwards helplessly. It's card was thrown from it's place on the duel disk, before being caught by it's owner.

"Phoenix Wing WInd Blast? Heh...oh well. No matter."

Demitri could only shake his head as he placed Caius on the top of his deck.

Of all the things he could have spun, he spins this? He really does have much to learn...

The Obelisk glanced at his face-down once more, then the rest of his field. Was that first set really a bluff...or was it something more? A slight grin parted his lips once more as he set a third card to his backline.

"Not bad Jake. You've managed to save yourself for this turn. The question is now...can you make use of this?" Demitri called out, signaling the end of his turn.

Jake knew he had to do something and had to do something now. He drew a card and added it to the others in his hand. I play the spell known as Heavy Storm! Jake said. As an Obelisk, you know what it does. Jake said as Demitri's three cards, Lightning Vortex, Card of Safe Return, and Raigeki Break, were sent to the grave. He then looked back down at the cards in his hand and looked very displeased. I wish I could take advantage of this situation, but I cannot. All I can do is set a monster and hand the turn to you.

Demitri watched as his back row was torn to pieces by the storm. That first card...it really HAD been a bluff! But why would Demitri announce it like that!?

"No matter..." The Obelisk said simply. "Card of Safe Return was the only real loss, anyways." He mused, drawing his card.

He looked at it. He knew what it was, and so did Jake. Still...just because the Osiris knew it was coming didn't mean he was going to like what came next.

"Well...you may stopped me from digging any deeper into my deck. But thankfully this is just as good as anything I could have hoped to draw." Demitri said with a grin.

The Caius on the field disappeared into a cloud of black smoke, before being replaced by a new monster...the Caius that Jake had so thoughtfully recycled. Once again the dark emperor worked his diabolical magic, removing Jake's face-down Goblin Zombie from the game. For a third time, Jake felt the sting of the Monarch's power as another thousand life points were torn away in a pillar of evil light.

"Now there's nothing left to protect you..." Demitri said, raising his hand. "Caius! Tear into him!"

Caius raised it's gauntlet, before a wave of malicious power spewed forth from it's palm. The blast hit Jake head on, tearing another large chunk of his life points away.

"That's it for this turn." Demitri said quietly. "You're time is just about up Jake. Is this all you can muster?"

Jake's LP: 2600

Jake knew his monsters were being torn apart by one monster. He wiped the sweat that was beginning to show on his head and drew his card. This may be my last shot to turn things around. Jake said to himself as he set a card. So Demitri, I have no monsters this turn. Lets see how things turn out. Jake said as he, again, passed play to Demitri.

Demitri eyed the set Jake put down. He didn't set any monsters, so he either didn't have any in hand, was setting up for a Torrential, or was hoarding that last card to fuel another Wing Blast.

",,,"

Demitri wasn't too concerned. He knew he had the duel won...it was just a matter of whether it would be now or next turn. He looked at his hand, mulling over his options for a moment before deciding on a course of action.

"First up, I'll activate Arms Hole. By sending the top card of my deck to the graveyard..." He began, milling Brain Control from his deck. "I can select one Equipment Spell from my deck or Graveyard and add it to my hand!"

As the spell kicked in, the image of his Brain Control card appeared on the field. As it fell to the ground, it dissolved into dust as a hole in the fabric of space tore open before them. Taking his deck from the card reader, Demitri sifted through it before selecting a card from it. At once, a new card rose from the rift that had just been created...Premature Burial. The Obelisk shuffled his deck briefly, before returning it to the appropriate slot.

"Of course, this comes at a price...aside from losing a card from my deck. During the turn Arms Hole is activated, I can't Normal Summon a monster. But that's not a problem. After all...Caius is more than enough!"

The Monarch began to attack once more, but a familiar wind storm kicked up. Jake's face-down had indeed turned out to be Phoenix Wing Wind Blast. Caius was once again returned to the top of Demitri's deck as Jake's in hand Book of Life hit the graveyard.

"Oh well...not a problem." the giant said with a shrug. "In that case, I'll set one monster and end my turn." he finished calmly.

Jake knew he had to take out that monster or Caius would finish him off next turn. He pretty much prayed to some kind of dueling gods as he drew his card. As soon as the looked at it, the look of depression slammed his face. Without saying a word, he set a monster and gave Demitri the gesture to finish him off.

",,,"

Demitri drew his card...yet again faced with the familiar artwork of Caius. His face-down card, Spirit Reaper stood firm. Granted...it hadn't needed to endure an attack, but it would've held firm nonetheless.

However, Demitri opted not to sacrifice it for Caius. Instead, he activated Premature Burial and called back Goblin Zombie. Without a word, the Goblin was offered to herald the return of the wicked king. Yet again, Caius' malevolent power swept over the field, removing Jake's face-down, Sangan, from the game. And once more a column of unholy magic erupted from beneath Jake's feet, sheering another thousand from his dwindling life points.

As the blast dissipated, and Mezuki was called to his hand by Goblin Zombie's effect, Demitri nodded. This would be the final assault.

"Caius...finish this." the Obelisk commanded. The Monarch rose up, preparing it's final blow. Unleashing a large blast of evil sorcery from it's armored hands, the spell hit home. In an instant, the pavilion was engulfed in dark flames as Jake's life points fell to zero.

"That...would be my win." Demitri said, no hint of excessive emotion in his voice. He was content with his victory, but that was only a secondary goal at the moment.

"Now then Jake...tell me." He began, removing his deck from the reader and returning it to the deep confines of his coat. At once, his duel disk retracted itself and folded into it's more compact stand-by mode. Pulling down on his sleeve, the device was concealed once again by the vibrant blue material, After shifting and straightening it out a bit to ensure comfort, he turned his full attention to the Osiris.

"What do you think this lesson was supposed to teach you?"

Jake thought as he put his deck back into his pack on his belt and the disk went back into standby mode. He kept thinking but could not come up with a good answer. Ummm, that a person's dorm or profession does not signify how much they actually know? Jake asked, thinking that is definately was far off from right.

Demitri stared at the Osiris with a 'Duh...' expression on his face.

"Of course that's correct, but that wasn't the meaning behind this. This was meant to determine your abilities regarding analysis and concentration...and it began, unintentionally, with the incident back in class. For example...had you been paying better attention and taken a moment to think, you would have known that I'd already gotten a general idea of what kind of deck you used by watching you tag with Lawrence."

Demitri picked up his umbrella, shaking off the remaining drops of water that still clung to it.

"Therefore, you would have known that I had a clear tactical advantage during this exchange...even if I DIDN'T know your whole deck. Using what I'd gathered from watching you duel, coupled with my own knowledge of the archetype in general, I already had a general idea of how I was going to play against you. This was your first lesson; making sure to pay better attention to the people and places around you. Now then..."

Demitri stopped for a moment, gathering his thoughts before continuing on. He wanted to make this as simple as possible so the Osiris would understand. It wasn't meant to infer that Jake was incapable of understanding...but judging by his initial response he had yet to pick up on even some of the most basic concepts.

"That brings us to present. I'm going to be blunt here...you made several glaring mistakes that practically HANDED me the game. I'm going to go over the most obvious...wasting your Wind Blasts on Caius. Now, while it's true that there are plenty of scenarios where spinning tribute monsters is a perfectly sound plan, it generally doesn't work as well against Monarchs or any monster that activates upon Tribute Summon."

Demitri stopped for a moment to take a breath and allow his words to sink in. Content that enough time had passed, he continued.

"Especially when the monster in question has an effect that's so lethal to ones own deck. I mean, not only does Caius remove cards from the game preventing you from utilizing your recursion tactics...but your deck is full of dark monsters. In practice, I'm gaining two types of advantage for the cost of a single card...something you don't want to happen more than once. Yet you let me use the same Monarch three times over the course of the duel..."

Demitri raised his umbrella to his shoulder, tapping it absentmindedly against the fabric of his coat as he spoke.

"This could have been prevented with a bit of forethought. Take, for example, the turn where I brought back my Goblin Zombie for the first time to use as an offering. You should have known from my body language and the general appearance of the play that I was going to be tributing it. In fact, Goblin would have made the best target for your Wind Blast. Granted...I had already gained a card thanks to Card of Safe Return, but I would have lost a substantial deal of momentum, losing not only an ideal sacrifice and my next draw...but I would have wasted one of my best forms of recursion. Better still, the card that was spun wouldn't have been nearly as useful as a recycled Monarch."

The Obelisk giant removed the umbrella from his shoulder, tapping it's point against the ground. He glanced at his watch, before rubbing his neck with his free hand.

"...There was more that I wanted to go over with you. But I'm running out of time, sadly. Therefore, I'll go with the abridged version. One, stop being so stubborn about who and what you learn from...if you sit around waiting for someone to teach you then everyone else is going to continue on as you wallow in your own mediocrity. Two, you lack focus and analytical skills. Improve on these and you'll find you win a bit more often. Three...before saying you can't trust anyone, take a good hard look at yourself. If you stopped to think about the people you come in contact with, you'd be able to judge whether or not they're going to be someone who'll screw you over in the long run."

Having finished his long-winded impromptu lecture, Demitri proceeded to the edge of the pavilion. Opening his umbrella, he turned back to Jake once more.

"You've got a lot to learn about this game and life in general. However...the answers aren't typically going to be handed to you. If you can't open your eyes and take a critical look at the world around you, everything is just going to pass you by."

Bowing politely to the Osiris, the giant made his exit. Truth be told...he wasn't quite sure where he was going yet. He just didn't feel like getting into some drawn out discussion...
