Rina walked behind her friend Aoi and to the side, taking in the scent of a single corn dog in her hand... among the other scents of festive snacks in the air. Lost in the dog's aroma, which was purchased for that reason, she began to really feel that feeling... when you're totally into the place that you traveled to - really enjoying it - away from home or other such places; a great outing.

...And only X (time) had passed...!

"I had forgotten how good carnival food smells...!" Holding her uneaten corn dog upright, Rina glanced at Aoi. "So Aoi, which did you wanna ride next? The lines are getting kinda long, now." ...An interesting question for Corndog Girl to ask....

Little technicalities that I tend to nitpick or mull over.

Aoi extended her hand to a large spacecraft on the right side of the courtyard. "Stardust." She turned her head to face Rina, but continued walking forward. She was vaguely aware of her surroundings, and was sure Rina would stop her if she was about to bump into something. "Have you ever played laser tag, Rina?"

An interesting question.

Blankly, Rina gazed into Aoi's eyes, wondering where that question came from. Aoi's paced hadn't slowed down, so Rina took longer strides until she was next to her. "Nnm," Rina shook her head softly at Aoi, then faced the front again. "Haven't had a chance, really; no." Then.... "! Why, is there one, here, somewhere...?" The Ra teen in casualwear glanced around, looking for something she had never seen before.

Aoi smiled. "Maybe." A bulky silver door on the side of the spacecraft slid open as it sensed their approach. The metalwork architecture on the inside of the ship showed signs of rust, which suggested that the aging battleship had been constructed in the early years of the war. A series of flashing arrows pointed Aoi and Rina through a system of corridors into a large hanger bay. A long line of perhaps forty people wrapped through the sides of the hanger, leading down to the iron gray shuttles themselves. Periodically, the airlocks on the far side of the room would open, sending shuttles into the battlefield and receiving the exhausted and wounded. Several of the Republic's officers, in uniform and armed with laser rifles, stood watch over the hangar bay.

Now in line, Aoi faced Rina as they waited. "We'll definitely be getting a full game, that's for sure. You at least want a decent number of targets, you know."

"I guess so," she mildly shrugged with a nervous, yet excited, smile. Glancing around, she uttered with a grin, "I just hope I don't get eliminated right off the bat...."

After a passing thought, Rina turned back to Aoi. "By the way: I guess this isn't your first time, so... how good are you at this sorta thing? ! And what's the shooting like? How do you know if you're hit? Do you feel it?"

The questions of a relative newbie.

"You'll know when you get hit. You see what those guards are wearing?" She pointed to one of the Republic's soldiers that were working crowd control. "Over that uniform you'll see that black vest with the flashing lights. That's your target - right on the heart. If you get hit there, you'll feel a vibration all over the vest, and the lights will change their flash pattern." She faced her partner once again. "You'll be fine; just follow me. I've been doing this kind of thing for years with my brother."

The line was progressing. It would only be a short time before the two made it down to the ground floor of the hangar bay, where the shuttle craft would be waiting for them.

"Aim for the heart..." she thought aloud to herself. As the line progressed, Rina moved forward, her heart beating faster than usual. Excitement's invisible aura surrounded her as she tried to strategize in advance.

"That's the only way I can die, right: getting shot in the heart?" she asked Aoi for confirmation. The redhead's hands curled up and connected in front of her.

Aoi placed her hands on Rina's shoulders. "Shoulders." Sliding her right hand down behind Rina, she continued, "Back." Finally, her left hand hovered in front of Rina's arms. "Sides and barrel of the gun. Those are stun hits that disable the weapon. Shooting those allows you to close in for a kill-shot. Another reason why we should stick together." Aoi released Rina and nodded. "You have all that, right?"

The pair had finally made it inside the shuttle. Up close, it was apparent that a system of rails controlled the shuttles' movement to the airlock doors, rather than the glowing anti-gravity thrusters. There were eight seats in the unit; each one had a vest and weapon beside it, ready for the combatants. A female officer with a few medals pinned to her uniform stood at the front of the shuttle. The shuttle began rolling forward as the captain began the introduction.

"This is no picnic, marines! This is the Stardust Shootout! The Imperial Forces have taken out our defensive grid at Anterion 4! Our unit has been assigned the task of retaking the Orbital Research Center! This will not be an easy mission - the Empire's elite commandos are there waiting for us! But, we cannot let the new technology fall into their hands! We must defeat them here!

"On your seat, you will see our latest power vest and laser gun! I will ask you to put them on now! The enemy will have similar equipment; your targets are these flashing lights!"
She pointed to the flashing lights on her own vest. "If you get hit, you will hear this sound!" She fired at an unsuspecting Rina Kasakura, causing a mild vibration on her vest in addition to a buzzing sound. "Heart is a kill-shot! If you die, you must return to this shuttle! All other targets lock out weapon firing for ten seconds! Remember this, and use it to your advantage!

"We will have fifteen minutes to defeat the enemy forces before they finish downloading our computer files! Now, it's time to move out!"
The shuttle stopped and the door swung open. A maze of corridors and smoke extended from the station's docking bay.

With Aoi looking her in the eyes, Rina said faintly, "Mm. I think so, yeah." She continued with her thoughts, thanks to the new info.

--------------------

Rina followed Aoi into the shuttle where their gear awaited them. Only after the lady officer came into view, and began the briefing, did Rina try to put on the powered vest, with a help of Aoi. Using the redhead as a example, the captain opened fire upon her. The vibrations from the vest shocked Rina, sending her arms up in the air as she yelped in surprise.

By the time the officer had completed the briefing everyone had their equipment on and ready. As the shuttle door opened, Rina turned to Aoi, looking to her for assistance. She wasn't going to move out without Aoi's instruction.
