They did make it safely and all tuck into their kennels for tonight. The staff at Longmont were so surprised at how mellow the dogs were, they expected them to be freaked out etc.. We are very grateful to Longmont and IFAW and Cloud nine, for giving many of these dogs that have been with the Coz HS for almost a year. One particularly a staff favorite, but fearful named Nano they accepted and agreed to work with him. Yesterday the day he left was one year exactly to the date that somebody abandoned him in the middle of the night tied to the Coz HS gate. These kind of surprises happen all too regularly. We are surely hoping they will be able to help him as he is a great dog and loves people he knows. He has been the HS mascot for the last year and the most faithful night guard dog, he has done his duty and now hopefully he will find his rightful forever home. Cloud nine is back this Saturday and we are so very hopeful to fill the plane again for dogs with direct adopts to the North East regions of the US. |

That news has just made my day!!!! Andrea, what is this Cloud Nine organization. I've never heard of them. Is the link between IFAW and HS Cozumel formalized now? I'm thrilled to hear what they are doing to help you and Monica. I've supported them for years so it is really good to know that they are doing something in Cozumel. You two are just the best!!!! See you in September. Fancy dinner or a drink one evening? I arrive on 5 September and Steve doesn't arrive until Friday the 10th so I'm footloose and fancy free for a few days. Maria |

Maria, would love to have a social outing with you and lets plan that for sure. IFAW and the HS have been collaborating for almost two years now. Most of this has been to support the permanent free spay/neuter program here in Cozumel. They also had visited the dump a number of times and had a keen interest in helping, this problem has been terrible for years out there. A year ago we teamed up to do something about it, but things ended the way it did and sadly as we all know, everybody was kicked out. So, we took in Gabacho's pack of dogs and it has pushed the shelter beyond limits. IFAW and Longmont HS stepped in. LHS was able to take 8 dogs, 1 went direct to private home. IFAW has worked hard to find others some direct homes. I have posted a lot of updates and photos on facebook so look for me if you use facebook. The animal control department is now actively catching the feral packs out in the dump and euthanizing all of them. The way the garbage is processed leaves nothing for the packs to scavenge from. So the fear is real that they will resort to eating turtle eggs. I can only hope they will put as much effort to erecting signs stating that there will be BIG FINES FOR DUMPING ANIMALS, as the effort they are putting into killing the dogs, which has never worked in the past. I also can only hope they will actually enforce the laws of abandonment of one's animal at such places like the Cozumel Dump, such as checking cars before allowing them to enter and such, but sorry to sound cynical: I doubt it. The local government needs to be involved in the big picture: EDUCATING AND ACTUALLY PROSECUTING CRIMES AGAINST ANIMALS, AS THERE ARE LAWS HERE TO PROTECT ANIMALS. A few periodic stories in the local newspapers is not enough to change this practice of abandoning animals at the dump, IMHO. (these are my own personal opinions outside of the HS). I am thankful at least all dogs picked up will be humanely euthanized. Anywhere else they would not be, they would be poisoned or electrocuted. We must applaud our ecology department for the fact they are taking the time to do this at least humanely. Andrea |

hi Andrea we were fishing at the north end the other evening and there was a pack of five or six dogs there , we havent seen the racoons for sometime maybe its the presence of a large croc that has something to do with it .... can the dogs come over from the other side of the island or are they living in that vicinity now .. |

A little more specific regarding location would help. I don't think the dogs from the dump or even the ones we neutered and released that follow the military around north of Mezcalitos would have transferred over to the Passion Island area. I am not quite sure where you mean. Is this where you mean? Were the dogs friendly or shy and timid? We have had dogs brought in rescued from the sewage plant on the north, a litter of 6 puppies was brought last fall, so would not be surprised if there is a stray pack around there. We also have our highway pack of 5 on the south. Impossible to catch, we have all tried. They march up and down and usually become quite visible when the matriarch goes into heat, fondly known as big boobs, her teats resemble the udders from a milking cow. They are also often lingering around the Puerta Maya area. When dogs are feral, they are very, very hard to catch and unfortunately the under funded perrara cannot work at night when these dogs come out etc.... I would just love to neuter and release the highway pack as they all look great, would just like to stop Big Boob's puppies from being collected every 6 months and brought to the HS for re-homing. We have recycled many of her pups! |

Thanks for the reply Andrea. I will give you a call when I arrive on 5 sept and make arrangements. I could also come and help out at the HS some time. See you soon and well done with all the work. Is there anything (small) you want me to bring? I am only bringing hand luggage but if there's something I can fit in there, let me know. Maria |

Maria some cat toys would be great, we get them donated, but they get trashed pretty fast. Jeffers pet supply has really good deals on line, little balls and the crinkles are a favorite. C u in September! andrea |
