New Project: Desert Wolf Cruise Missile

The Desert Wolf Cruise Missile is the first attempt by any nation to combine the power of a cruise missile with the high technology, the ability to be reused, and battlefield surveillance roles of a UCAV.

The Desert Wolf will be equipped with the latest in sensors, especially infrared and visible range sensors, as well as various radar and laser warning recievers. The missile will be equipped with 1 base warhead, of 35kg HE, as well as 3 bomb bays. These bays will carry a variety of munitions, depending on the mission. Most missions will involve submunitions, similar to those used in the CBU-97 bomb. The missile can carry 6 submunitions in each bomb bay. The missile can be programed with numerous different attack profiles. The missile is able to independently search and identify targets within a given area parameter, as well as engage these targets. Upon dropping all weapons in the bomb bays, the missile, depending on the mission profile, either launches itself at a further target (usually a hardened structure) or returns to the launching plane. The Desert Wolf is picked up by flying into a retractable net suspended behind the launching aircraft. The initial launching aircraft will be a converted retired C-130E tactical transport, however, if the weapon is successful, the Israeli Air Force may request to purchase a purpose-built carrier for the missiles.

Specifications:
Length: 6.5m
Diameter: 0.75m
Engine: Bet Shemesh Sorak 4 turbofan engine, 800 lbf
Speed: Mach 0.5 cruise speed, top speed Mach 0.85
Warhead: 35 kg, 3 bomb bays, total capacity 1,000 kg
Range: Maximum: 800km
10sq km search and return: 300km
10 sq km search and no return: 600km

Desert Fox
Modified C-130E, used to launch Desert Wolf cruise missiles

Posted Image
(OOC: The black scribbles near the cockpit is my recreation of "Desert Fox" in Hebrew, thanks to Google Translate)

Modification to basic C-130:
-Alteration of landing gear fairing as shown
-Avionics upgrades
-Addition of an EL/M-2052 radar for terrain mapping, target acquisition (at close range), and self defense
-Modification of the Sergeant Fletcher drop tanks; the new tanks will feature recesses to store two Derby or Python 5 AAMs for self defense, lowering range slightly
-Structural enhancements
-Glass Cockpit
-Two new crew stations. 1 will control the missiles on board, directing the launch, retrieval, refueling and rearming of the missiles. The other will supervise the missiles in flight. Both stations, as well as both pilots will have access to the plane's radar information, and authority to fire AAMs in self defense.
- Addition of equipment to recapture missiles, as well as refueling and rearming on board

The missiles will be captured by an electromagnetic tether, reeling the missile in through the cargo ramp door. The missile propels itself until it is 3m away from the ramp, at which point the engine shuts down. From there, the tether reels the missile the rest of the way into the cargo hold. The missile is dragged up a specially laid track in either side of the plane, depending on which side already has a missile in it. The missile is rearmed with bomblets, then lifted into its fairing over the landing gear, where it is refueled. It can then be launched again. The whole rearm/fuel process takes 15 minutes. The plane carries 5 full reloads of bomblets, pre-packaged in canisters of 7 M85 bomblets (with the IMI self destruct fuse). Each missile can carry up to 24 canisters, which are ejected two at a time, one out either side of the missile.
