The Yeltsin Class Aircraft Carrier is a designs for a Russian Aircraft Carrier of which at least 6 are to be built with the keel being laid for the first hull in 2012. This design incorporates lessons learned from the Kiev and Admiral Kuznetsov class carriers. Major changes from those designs include nuclear propulsion, a larger flight deck, and a true CATOBAR system allowing for aircraft to launch at maximum takeoff weight. Construction for the first hull should take about 3-4 years, followed by 1-2 years of sea trials. Subsequent hulls may only take 4-5 years from laying the keel to commissioning. Unit cost will be $3.6 billion for the first hull, $3.2 for subsequent, not including the cost of carried aircraft. General Characteristics * Displacement: 60,000 tons empty * Length: 326.75 m * Beam: 75.9 m * Draught: 10.8 m * Propulsion: Nuclear * Speed: 32 knots * Crew: 2,140 * Aircrew: 1,500 * Flag staff: 40 Armament * 12 P-700 Granit anti-shipping cruise missiles in vertical launchers * 12 8-cell 3K95 SAM * 8 CADS-N-1 Kashtan CIWS system * 8 AK-630 AA guns * 2 RBU-12000 UDAV-1 ASW rocket launchers Aircraft Carried * 27 Su-33/MiG-29K class * 10 Su-39 * 4 C-2/E-2 type (to be designed) * 15-20 Ka-27 class helicopters

Yakolev Yak-78 The Yak-78 is a revised continuation of the Yak-44 Early Airborne Warning aircraft designed for the since-cancelled Ulyanov-class aircraft carrier of the Soviet Union. With the finalization of the Project 1422 carrier, the need for a carrier-based EAW aircraft has arisen again. Competition was finalized between the Yakolev entry, which based much work on the previous Yak-44 design, and a similar design from Tupolev. The Yak-78 received the contract due to reduced cost, and the availability of a Carrier On-Board Delivery variant. The Yak-78 will be ready for production by 2017, at a unit cost of $112 million. The Yak-78T, a COD variant, will be available at the same time at a unit cost of $32 million. ![]() Specifications * Crew: 5 (2 pilots, 3 naval flight officers - combat information center officer, air control officer, radar operator) * Length: 66 ft 10 1/4 in (20.39 m) * Wingspan: 84 ft 3 1/4 in (25.70 m) * Height: (7 m) * Loaded weight: 88,183 lb (40,000 kg) * Useful load (Yak-78T): 36,376 lb (16,500 kg) * Powerplant: 2 x KZ NK-12MVK turboprops driving contrarotating 8+6 bladed propellers, 9,890 kW each * Maximum speed: 460 mph (740 km/h) * Range: 2,486 mi (4,000 km) * Service ceiling: 42,650 ft (13,000 m) |
