The United States Department of Energy has begun the process of developing an economically viable way of using space-based solar power for America's power needs. The idea is that satellites in geosynchronous orbit would collect electricity where the sun's rays are far stronger than they are on Earth, and then beam it down to a receiver on Earth using microwave radiation. The idea was first dreamed up by Isaac Asimov, and has been looked into on a few occasions in recent years by various countries. The DOE's mandate is to develop the technology and eventually build a test station in order to test the viability of the idea.

France as a leader in clean energy is extremely interested in such an idea and would be willing to work with America to produce such a product.

We are of course interested in partnerships over such technology, as it does make development easier and less costly. What can France offer to the project?

A Major boost in funding has been granted to the project by new energy legislation in Congress, and there is a goal to make a test station operational by 2016. Pioneer Solaren Corporation has announced that it will be joining forces with the United States Department of Energy and its partners in the United Kingdom and France in this project. The DOE has also offered to join forces with the similar project underway in Japan.
