| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! these were a short series of alien creatures i did for a planet that got named terra zora (pure earth) at some point. i may do more, but more likely start something new, as these turned out too superficially earth-like for my liking, though there are features of them that i like. the writing and notes by the side of each was supposed to be in the style of an explorer's journal, but i realise it's completely pointless since no one can read my writing. ever. suggestions and such welcome. http://matatonai.deviantart.com/gallery/#aliens (check out the vulturepig and the baleen airfluter, they seem to be the most popular!) |

What do you mean no one can read your handwriting? I can, probably because no one at my school has good penmenship. Though some creatures look like demented pigs, it doesn't look too Earth-like. An Earth-like design may be the best way to survive on an Earth-like world. |

well, no one i know can read it. heck, i even had some trouble when i went to re-read bits of it there. and yeah, the area i mentally crashed the exploration team was the right sort of place for a few types of scavengers and forragers, so lots of demented pigs. if i ever get round to finishing my drawings, i'll have some kind of demented elephant, and some demented sharks too. and i think it's earth like because i followed earth's generall rules. creature must have a front, a back, a mouth, eyes, nose, ears, skeleton, four limbs. could quite easily ignore or re-work any of them. maybe my next planet will be less earth like. |

Two things: 1. Creatures don't have to follow those rules. 2. It's a great project, but if your looking for a new exobiology project, why not try a "sequel" to Snaiad (kind of like what I did with Rilln. Check it out if you wish, but I'm not meaning to advertise)? Talk about a planet that another ethnic group colonized (Middle East and China are already taken). Maybe a gas dwarf (a gaseous planet that is smaller than Jupiter, only five times the size of Earth)? But this project is good. If you want to redo the project, you could use Nemo Ramjet's approach (create a wierd, but believable, alien and evolve it until you have many different lineages). |
