Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Or things they have.
I'm watching a TV show now about Brygmophyseter. This show is laying claim that unlike modern day Sperm Whales, Brygmophyseter had sonar?

In the theory of evolution, and survival of the fittest why would a creature lose things that clearly make it superior during the course of the evolutionary process?

:)

It became a disadvantage somehow and was then lost?

It wasn't needed anymore?

A better advantage came along that led to losing sonar like manipulating digits were lost for wings in birds?

Of course the show is wrong because sperm whales do use echolocation.... So yeah... don't believe everything you seen on television.

Ah. Thanks for that.
The show was Jurassic Fight Club.
It also said that the Brymophyseter could stun a predator [Like the Megalodon] with it's sonar.

I don't think that is possible. Dolphins can confuse fish from close range, but it is not something that goes very far, neither is it used on large animals.

And to answer your question, because the senses are not beneficial. Senses are delicate, and need a lot of brain power. This diverts energy from animals breeding. If they are not needed to survive then a animal will loose them, for example blind cave animals.

Also you seem to have the wrong idea about evolution, its not about a organism getting better and better, it is about what best helps genes survive.

I don't even know why Sayf is here; I mean, this site is to debate about hypothetical evolutionary paths life might take, and since he seems to be leaning towards creationism and always pointing out "errors" that aren't even actual errors it totally makes me wonder why he is still around.

Well he is only asking. He is not some creationist trouble maker. He does seem to try and poke holes in the theory that are not their though.

EDIT: I started watching this series, its quite good. But it does show signs of being a modern science show. It's not the worst for the but it is Xtreme science! With a X!

JohnFaa, i think you're being a little harsh. Surely most of you have had interactions with real creationists before - if they ask a question about evolution, they refuse to accept any answers given to them and will generally continue to ask the same question (in one form or another). Sayf is merely curious, and asking questions, which I wish more people would do instead of not caring about and/or making assumptions about science.

Exactly, in fact I knew a fellow like him at Cryptozoology.com. He was also a Muslim and while I thought that he was hoping for a gap to shove Allah in, he was not a savage fundamentalist that needed civilization rammed up their fundaments.
They both are just interested.

Sorry, but I don't see what could have given you that idea.
My question was based on my understanding that evolution is the theory that animals adapt to their environment based on something I had heard on a show. Sorry if you think I'm here to find holes in something I admit I know little about. :|
All in all, it's fine. :)

It was just my understanding that if something is [from our view, not always the right view I admit] likely to help a creature in survival, why would it be lost.

Thank you for the responses.

Something would be lost because it did not help the creature survival, at least not enough to warrant the energy used on it.

I'm going back to basics.

For example, you might not realist it, but your body regulating its own temperature uses a huge amount of energy, what you eat ina day would keep a similarly sized reptile full for days.
