Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Me, I think it's got to be my devil-dervish and my entries for the first Monster Mash. Honestly, the initial plans that I had for them were rather different (Namely a Lost Tapes-style thing where each monster picks off a few visitors), but when I got to writing, they just kinda... flowed into the resulting entry. Ideas for how they evolved, what they look like - it all just came really naturally to me.

This is reminding me that despite my interest in speculative evolution and all my years here on a forum devoted to exactly that, I've actually not done all that much speccing myself.

My proudest work would probably be my Dragons project: http://s1.zetaboards.com/Conceptual_Evolution/topic/4880813/1/
Though it ultimately ended up stagnating and never being continued after that, it still stands out as being the only of my creations on this forum that actually was a full on project (the only other things I've made on this forum have been stand-alone creatures for COMs and speculative evolution themed ideas I proposed but never went on to make into projects- such as my space dwelling alien creature idea). I have long had possible ideas for other projects, its just I've always had trouble committing to them.

Cryptovaranus sylvaticus or stripped tailed Nagga for the Allocene project collab, is nto very weird as a concept just a rather conservative varanid in a world of neo mosasaurs, gliding lizards and duck billed monitors but still I liked how I made te drawing (I followed references very crealy but did it at hand and then scanned it and edited in mypaint
, and it was liked by a lot of people, not the best concept not the best art but it was the first of many to come
Astarte an alt eocene world, now on long hiatus but you never know
Fanauraa; The rebirth of Aotearoa future evo set in new zealand after a mass extinction

" I have to know what the world will be looking throw a future beyond us
I have to know what could have been if fate acted in another way
I have to know what lies on the unknown universe
I have to know that the laws of thee universe can be broken
throw The Spec I gain strength to the inner peace
the is not good of evil only nature and change, the evolution of all livings beings"

My proudest work is this painting, as it is my first illustration showing an example of life in its natural habitat on Hodea, and it was a big breaktrough for me as an artist. http://s1.zetaboards.com/Conceptual_Evolution/single/?p=3129228&t=8134140

I have a horrible tendency to start things and never finish them, so my proudest work has got to be Settlers from the Deep, even if for no other reason that I worked on it until it was all done.
My deviantART page - My other extra-project work - Natural History of Horus and its flora and fauna - A graphic history of life (also here) - AuxLang Project: a worldwide language - Behold THE MEGACLADOGRAM - World Without West: an alternate history

SpecEvo Tutorials: Habitable Solar Systems (galaxies, stars and moons); Planets (geology, oceans and atmosphere); Ecology (energy, biomes and relationships); Alternative Biochemistry (basic elements, solvents, pigments); Biomechanics (body structure, skeletons, locomotion); Bioenergetics (photosynthesis, digestion, respiration); Perception (sense organs and nervous system); Reproduction (from genetics to childbirth); Offense and Defense (camouflage, poisons and weapons); Intelligence (EQ, consciousness and smartest animals); Civilizations (technology, domestication and culture); Exotic Life (living crystals, nuclear life, 2D biology); Evolution (genetics, selection and speed); Phylogeny (trees of life); Guide to Naming (how to name your creations) (and more!)

My projects here:

Natural History of Horus (19th century naturalists... in space)
Galactic Anthropology (intelligence takes many forms around the Milky Way)
Settlers from the Deep (a tour in a blind and slimy future)
Coming soon: A Matter of Time (a history of the future... all of it)

Mine would have to be the 'mini- project' consisting of two very loosely related entries from the past two winter- themed COMS (this and this). It doesn't go into much depth in terms of worldbuilding but I plan to keep adding to it every winter COM. Maybe if I keep it up long enough it'll eventually form a somewhat complete and cohesive project.

I do like the first one a lot more than the second even though the first one didn't win its contest.
Hey.

I've made three major projects during my years on the forum, two of which (The Neozoic and Valhalla) have been rebooted at least once each. My favorite, though, is one that I only recently started and intend to be my Magnum Opus of Spec. I call it, for good reason, The Big One.
The premise of The Big One is that instead of chordates, annelids became the dominant large animals on Earth following the Cambrian. Instead of just looking at the present, however, the project explores all of the following half-billion years, looking at everything that changes as a result of the annelids' triumph. In my introduction to it I referred to it as "the Mt. Everest of Alternative Evolution"-- a rather bold statement, but a fitting one, I believe, seeing as this one diverges from our own timeline farther back than any I have ever seen before.
You can find a link to it in my signature if you want.

In the end, the best advice I could give you would be to do your project in a way that feels natural to you, rather than trying to imitate some geek with a laptop in Colorado.

I'm personally proud of all of 2D world project so far. It's just... there's so much trying things out and messing around behind it and when it all clicks together into a coherent world it's quite satisfying.

I also have a soft spot for Dreidel's beakworms. Until them, acanthopterans were mostly just beaked fish-like things, and given their dominance of freshwater I obviously was going to have a terrestrial group appear. I like how I was able to use this to change their bodyplan up into something that was definitely not a pseudo-tetrapod.
