| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Something something anniversary, something something yeah yeah I'm late on this one. Can't believe I didn't think of this for yesterday, but what is your proudest work of spec? As in, of what you yourself have created? Simple question, and I can't be bothered to type out a fancy-pants paragraph this time. |
totally not British, b-baka! You like me (Unlike)I don't even really like this song that much but the title is pretty relatable sometimes, I guess. Me What, you want me to tell you what these mean? Read First Words Maybe | |

My proudest work has got to be the Nhim from Neverlandia. With everything else i've made, there has always been this niggling feeling in the back of my head like something could be better. With the Nhim though, they just feel... right. That feeling of imperfection disappears. I am proud of them, and they make me happy. |

Some of the spec I've felt proudest of have yet to make it to the forum (I'm looking at you, hot place). It's easier to churn out the entries I'm less confident in than to be confident that something has reached its full potential, I guess. While I wouldn't say it's the best thing I've ever posted as a whole, I am still very fond of the first spec I ever posted on the site: my legionnaire crabs from ICFB. I think the prose of the entry is rather weak compared to the way I write now, but I'm proud the way the concept comes together. |

This Orphaned COM entry is probably what I would consider myself proudest of, since it was actually one of the first concepts I've ever fully written out, much less posted. Looking back on it, the post's not that great, and it really could be better in nearly every aspect, including aspects that may have made it a better COM entry too, though considering that I wrote it all pretty late at night I don't really know if I've really improved. Another work, which is also a COM entry that I'm quite proud of would be the bay gambonca from the Nothing to Nightmare COM. It's got the same makeup as the monstrous maritran entry, starting with a story and going on to the actual spec, but I think I balanced it much better in the second. While I'd describe either of these two as my proudest legitimate spec works, I definitely think I can improve, and look back on these old posts like I would some work from high school. Though to do that, I'd need to actually write more spec, so y'know... |

Though somewhat outdated, I think this particular update for my xenobiology project Solais is some of my best work. In particular, I really like the way in which the information is presented and the abundance of pictures that help explain things. |

Well, I am certainly proud of my latest project Punga. My last project (ARTH-6810) was mediocre at best and atrocious at worst. And the project before that (my first spec) is unspeakable. Here are ways I think I imrpoved from ARTH to Punga. 1. The intro post feels more "real" to me. The backstory for my last project felt a little contrived. 2. The roster of founding species in Punga is actually an established, limited set. In my last project, I literally dumped every single invertebrate on a planet, with no regard to which ones die and which ones survive. This was mostly an excuse so I can make up an animal from any invert clade. Even worse was how I treated plants. I rarely specified the existence of any specific plant groups. I gave nearly no indication as to which plants where introduced, despite this information being massively important. The way I half assed plants in ARTH was much worse than the treatment of arthropods in any other project. This made me feel like a gigantic hypocrite. Through out ARTH's life span, I was wondering how I could make my project better, not realizing until the end that the biggest fuckup of all was not in any specific entry, but rather one of the fundamental aspects of the project itself. This whole situation was the driving force in me rebooting my project. And this time around, I actually carefully selected species for a founding organism list, and was especially set on having a good set of plants. 3. The spec itself also feels much more down to Earth. Of course, my current project is still in its infancy, but I think the spec is going good so far, as things feel more plausible here. I actually show evolution in process, like how food shortages force termites into more varied diets. I also like how my differentiation of biomes over the years plays out. My current favorite organisms in this project so far are the bear spiders and spike moss fruit. The only thing I don't like about my spec now is that some of the entries still feel too short like the beak leeches. 4. A common complaint about ARTH was the drawing. In this project, there is no drawing for now. Any drawings I do put will be uncolored, as color pencils suck. The only exceptions are drawings of creatures from ARTH that will be carried over to Punga (like the sand kraken). But all this aside, Punga is a very young project which, unfortunately, has seen a long period of inactivity. It could become a force to be reckoned with, but it could also crash and burn and be forgotten along with all the other projects that died early. So, until Punga develops more, I would have to say that my current crown jewel is Last One Crawling. This was originally a com idea, directly in response to the vertebrate one. Knowing it would never go through, I somehow got riled up enough to do it myself. I like this mini project because it was my first attempt at a "feelsy", emotionally driven narrative (and from the feedback I got, it wasn't too shabby). And the spec was also good enough, describing a barely surviving cave ecosystem with only one arthropod. Whoa, this was longer than I expected. I hope I didn't bore you. My proudest work has not surfaced on the forum yet, but it's an animal group in Future Planet. Given how long it's taken me to write out the Metanthropocene Ice Age I'm going to say it may be a couple of more years before it reaches the light of the forum. That being said, it's something I'm quite happy about. I suppose my proudest work on the forum would be the Nophians in Beryoni, mainly because they're the reason the universe I created about Beryoni exists in the first place. Even if they do look like dinosaurs |

So far, my proudest work on the forum would have to Van Diemen's Land. It's still in its infancy, but it is probably my best work that has actually been posted on the forum and has heaps of interesting creatures that have yet to be posted. Land Down Under, after I've tweaked a few things, given it a better name (because that's a terrible name for a spec project) and rebooted it, will also be pretty good. It might turn out that both are my proudest works, with Van Diemen's Land for alternate evo and the Land Down Under reboot for future evo, which are my main areas of interest in spec. |

It's just occurred to me how little of my stuff ends up on the forum. The spec creature I am most proud of is without a doubt the biradulates, specifically the ones I've dubbed "arboroforms" from an upcoming project of mine (that I've been on off working on for like half a year or some shit). Through several iterations I'm very pleased with the current design, as is the case with many of the project's concepts. I'd like to think I've created a sufficiently alien setting and concept with a simple factor, which adds to how much I'm proud of what I've made. Can you guess what it is?
