Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Proud quilt in a bag

So it's officially May 24th here in the Maritimes, and therefore that means I'm late for some of you and at least an hour early for everyone else. This means it's been, counting by days, ten whole years since the forum was created! I've just barely been a part of this place for a third of its lifespan (holy shit, I've been here for a third of the forum's lifespan), and I know a sizeable portion of you readers have been here for even less than that. Despite this, all of us here appreciate the work and creativity many members have put into backing up the name we have for this here message board. Extended introductions about stuff you knew already aside, I'm here to ask you guys a simple question... the third and final!

What's your favorite project a member or multiple members have created in the ten years of the forum? Simple question, I hope. Dead or alive, two pages or fifty, whatever the reason, all are welcome. This one doesn't count for anything at all, but it'd feel incomplete to talk about creatures and premises without asking for opinions on the thing that brings them all together. A project, as here defined, most simply be a collection of speculative evolution writings consisting of more than one entry (no essays, but feel free to praise them too!). To the last ten years, and (hopefully) to ten more!

My favourite project is probably Metatheria Absentsia - Australia without marsupials by Rodlox. It has been dead for a while, is only two pages long and unillustrated, but it had really unique and fun ideas, including gliding echidnas, marsupial moles with armour and arboreal cassowaries.

I appreciate a lot of projects for different things.

R'lyeh and Diyu are aesthetically very nice to look at, both being well thought out as well. Skatha may fall under this as well.
Nereus and Priapus Prime have really well done settings, not to mention high-quality aliens (cough cough radials cough).
Ilion is marvelous in how alien Monkey has really made it, standing out in the sort of awe you feel while reading it.

Honourable mentions go to Settlers From the Deep and Serina for originality and innovation. Sagan 4 has a special place in my heart for more or less introducing me to spec, and the dedication, scale and depth of it are inspiring to say the least.

I'll name out Diyu because that's a really interesting premis and I like the detail Trollman has put in with his environment, TFIF because I liked DT's imagination and all his creature specs (RIP), Lermuria by JohnFaa given how well done he was able to show off descendents of animals from that region he speculated would be present and Scrublord's Neozoic Redux because I'm a sucker for future evo projects and I like his take on animals evolving in the future. I'll add others during the course of the day I can't think of now.

Eighty Thousand is my favourite. I also really like Zainter.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

I like Settlers from the Deep for its weirdness, and TFiF for making cool creatures on such a grand scale (that and it was the first project I ever read). TFiF is also what ultimately inspired me to make my own project, so there's that as well. Sheatheria, also for all the bizarre creatures it has produced. R'lyeh and Diyu are among the top. Firstly because the premise of an isolated ecosystem who's fauna and flora come from so long ago is fascinating, and second because I'm a sucker for bugs and/or really obscure animals (which those projects have a lot of).

Serina, while very obvious, deserves a mention due to how real it all feels. Uncanny's Lance that Pierced the stars and dogworld are nice, as the writing style and general format hit close to home. Hangin's fire forest, while it has been dead for a while now, is also good as it goes into detail describing what may seem like mundane organisms (that and the rocket tarantula is awesome).

And last but not least, Troll man's com entry with the end turtles and to a lesser extent The last dinosaur inspired me to make Last One Crawling.
Projects
Punga: A terraformed world with no vertebrates
Last one crawling: The last arthropod

ARTH-6810: A world without vertebrates (It's ded, but you can still read I guess)

Potential ideas-
Swamp world: A world covered in lakes, with the largest being caspian sized.
Nematozoic: After a mass extinction of ultimate proportions, a single species of nematode is the only surviving animal.
Tri-devonian: A devonian like ecosystem with holocene species on three different continents.

I haven't been here long, so I don't know many of the older projects well. But definitely Serina and Sheatheria, because I love the concept of terraformed worlds. Also TFiF, because of its sheer scale, and also that it helped me find this forum.
