Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I'm not sure how much stock to put in this, given that the article open up stating that the heat death of the universe and the Big Crunch are the same thing, which doesn't give me much confidence in the writer's understanding of cosmology. I tried to find info elsewhere, but I'm busy today and Google isn't coming up with much at first.

Someone made a nice video on it, it says the same things that the article does basically.

The wikipedia article on the topic is under false vacuum, and you can find a lot of commentary by searching up that phrase as well.

As opeFool alludes to, I do not see anything in the article or skimming paper beyond the specific time estimate that seems to be especially new. The paper is just a more precise and detailed calculation of it.

I do note that the paper ends with the rather definitive line "it seems the long-term future of our Universe is not going to be slow freezing due to cosmic acceleration but an abrupt collision with one of these bubble walls." I don't believe the paper is actually presenting any new evidence that supports the universe being metastable though, a requirment for this phenomena to occur, which to my knowledge is still uncertain. This 2015 paper calls the assumption of metastability "premature."
