| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Long story short, a friend of mine who likes anime was trying to help me come up with a proper spec scenario. He suggested the world of Hokuto No Ken, starring Kenshiro. More importantly, the world he described is one where the Earth lost 90% of its seas/oceans, save for one sea in the east. Originally, I politely turned the idea down, as preliminary research told me macroscopic life wouldn't survive in this world. However some people on the discord chat said its more plausible than I thought. Does anyone have any thoughts/suggestions/research on what would happen if Earth lost that quantity of water? If its plausible I might run with this idea. -Hokuto No Ken World: So, the desert landscape of Hokuto no Ken was caused by nuclear war. This caused cities to be utterly wasted, but not obliterated. Most of the Earth's population died off, but there were also thousands of survivors. Those who were strong enough to brave through the fallout or lucky enough to be in shelter. Afterwards, the surface of Earth was mostly devastated. 90% of Earth's seas dried up, save for a specific region between China and Japan labeled the Dead Sea. On land, there were remnants of cities, but skyscrapers were ruined or in the process of toppling over. One large sea, freshwater sources, and atmospheric water still exist. |

As an alternative backstory, you could have aliens steal (most of) the sea.

Not only have you won me over with that idea due to it being a Calvin and Hobbes reference, but that works really well and I'm totally going to use that. |
