| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! So, for those who know me, I'm new to the site. And I have to say, I've gotten used to it pretty fast. I've been reading a lot of the great projects that have been archived, along with really interesting ones that are active (my favorite is Solais). So, I've decided to give anyone who's interested a sneak peek and history of the project into my first and newest official project, For Fruits are a Plant's Best Friend. Work and History on the Project I started working on the project in late February, alongside two other projects that I had started. The first which I had temporarily released before taking it down, titled A Leaf's Worth. It was about a pathogen that hijacked the photosynthetic reaction center, stealing sunlight and energy. However, the project itself lacked depth, and so I postponed the official release (it'll probably be released in June or July). I also worked on another project, titled Plant or Fungi? The mystery behind Adenoxicala ovasaccharasis. I merged this project into my third project, which I found to be the most interesting and would not prove evanescent on the reader (I hope): For Fruits are a Plant's Best Friend. The Project Itself: Sneak Peek For Fruits are a Plant's Best Friend is an alternative evolutionary project centered around botany. I am creating a project that is realistic scientifically, but also has an overall topic that can be slightly far off from reality: a botanical specimen that is a bred cross-species of fungi and plant, yet it is also neither, seeing as it can also be classified as its own type of specimen. It contains chloroplasts and goes through the process of photosynthesis; however, many of these chloroplasts are housed within a cap above gills. The species is a strange cross, and may even be identified as an entirely new type of botanical phylum (or not... you'll have to read the project and see it for yourself! ). The specimen also has two "fruits" growing off of the end of the stem, which in reality are sacs that house internal organs and vital fluids (some partly fictional, some not, all based off of real botany). Note that these organs aren't really like the ones humans have. For example, the organs will probably store some glands to aid in reproduction or storage glands for the storage of water, glucose or even sunlight. Strange, right? There will be a lot of stuff that goes in-depth for that part, but I'll try to make it as realistic as possible.Although I can't go into specifics, there will be a lot on the function and prime living conditions of the specimen, as well as its status being an invasive species (whoops, another piece of information). Oh, and don't worry - there will be a lot of images for this. I've attached a poll for you guys to judge the general idea of the project. Keep in mind that the sneak peek is limited for a reason. Also, please feel free to (in fact, I encourage you to) give feedback and ideas! If you want, I can credit the ideas to you in the final project. Just let me know! ![]() ©Psyko, 2018 Although I've gotten used to the site, I haven't developed enough communication with other members of the site to trust lots of people, so this project is "copyrighted". If you'd like to use information or anything substantial from my project in your project, please contact me. For those who are wondering, For Fruits are a Plant's Best Friend will be released in late April or early May. An official release date will be determined on April 1. This is in general discussion. You might be looking to post this in general spec. |

Projects and concepts that I have stewing around Extended Pleistocene- An alternate future where man died out, and the megafauna would continue to thrive (may or may not include a bit about certain future sapients) Inverted World- An alternate timeline where an asteroid hit during the Barremian, causing an extinction event before the Maastrichtian. Dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and notosuchians make it to the present, along with a host of other animals. Badania- Alien planet that has life at a devonian stage of development, except it exists in the present day. Ido- Alien world where hoppers (derived flightless ballonts) and mouthpart-legged beasts are prevalent. Leto- Life on a moon orbiting a gas giant with an erratic orbit; experiences extremes of hot and cold. The Park- ??? Deeper Impact- a world where the K-Pg extinction wipes out crocodilians, mammals, and birds; squamates, choristoderes, and turtles inherit the earth. World of Equal Opportunity- alternate history where denisovans come across Beringia and interact with native fauna. Much of the Pleistocene fauna survives, and the modern humans that end up crossing into North America do not overhunt the existing animals. 10,000 years later, civilizations exist that are on par with European and Asian societies. The Ditch- Nothing is what if seems.. | |

Not a plant or a fungus you say? Hmm if only we had something between the two... Oh wait. EDIT: Before someone comes in saying they aren't a cross between, they're in a symbiotic relationship, a colonial organism and whatnot, yes I know, don't be that person. Edited by Lowry, Mar 2 2018, 05:00 PM.

Well, yes. You're right. But the point is, I'm trying to make a sort of cross between the two, with clearer characteristics. It was also a generalization; there are other crosses, too. There's a lot more that's interesting scientifically speaking in this than with lichen. Just saying. Anyways, this project is for people who enjoy a more realistic point of view rather than something completely ridiculous, so I'm trying to keep it along the lines of something like lichen, I guess. I'm trying to give that to them. Plus, as you said, lichen are in a symbiotic relationship, while this is a direct cross between. It would be interesting to see a fungus with chloroplasts, you know? ![]() This is my first official project, so there'll be a couple bumps here and there. However, I've taken your thoughts into deep consideration. I've decided to add something even more interesting, even if it moves a little bit farther from reality - a fungi-plant mix with noticeable internal organs, comparable to those of an earthworm (because of its thin size; can easily be translated into something for a plant's stem). Note that these organs aren't really like the ones humans have. For example, the organs will probably store some glands to aid in reproduction or storage glands for the storage of water, glucose or even sunlight. I'll be working on it for a bit. Also, I've updated the initial thread so you can read more about it. Thank you again!

Thanks for your feedback, Archeoraptor! Sorry about the definitions; they were kind-of confusing. What I meant is that the botanical specimen is a bred cross-species of fungi and plant, yet it is also neither, seeing as it can be classified as its own type of specimen. As for your other question, I'm not quite sure what you're asking. If you're wondering why I'm so interested in creating this project, it's because this project is of great importance to me, seeing as it's my first on the site. Edited by Psyko, Mar 3 2018, 01:43 PM.
