| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. hum, after reading a bit about Warren Fahy's "Fragment", I became very interested in the biology of the island, more precisely on the "disk-ants" -Disc Ants (Rotaformica Hendersi) are small omnivores native to Henders Island- About a creature with radial symmetry with arthropod-like legs that can move like an insect, but which can also "flip" and roll like a wheel (ignoring the part of throwing yourself in the air like a frisbee). I was thinking of a disk ant-like animal, but much less deadly and frightening (ignoring also the part of them having "mini" disk ants on their backs and things like that), just a common animal, some kind of radial invertebrate that have legs and can move with them, or roll. Now, I have some questions about things like this: -What would be the limitations of a rolling movement? Where would the eyes, mouth, reproductive system remain? and mainly: how could such a thing exist on earth? which phylum could it belong to? or at least be closer? as something like that with radial symmetry and legs could it evolve? was thinking of something like a clade of animals that would have in it: -animals that are real as arthropods, with legs and that can not roll -animals that have legs and can roll -animals that roll exclusively (probably on the seabed because it's easier) - and beings that grow like plants (as a polyp) ![]() these animals necessarily do not need to exist on earth, but on a planet with the same biologic characteristics of the earth (as if they took a basal species from the earth and placed it on a moon or other planet) |

I have also been thinking of wheel organisms as well, but instead of rolling around on legs, it would pump fluid through a circular tube that runs through its disc-shaped body. The fluid would be pumped in the opposite direction of the wheel's rotation, keeping the blob of fluid just above the front of the wheel. This would make the front perpetually heavier than the back, causing the organism to roll. Now only if I had a picture that better illustrates my concept... I'd better get to work for that. As for legs, it primarily uses them to stabilize the organism while rolling, making sure it does not tip over. However, the concept also poses the same questions as your concept- and more importantly, how would it evolve? |

There's also the flic-flac spider, which rolls on its legs. Definitely the closest thing to a disk ant. Edited by HangingThief, Feb 23 2018, 04:07 PM.

well, I feel like I was not clear enough when defining what kind of scrolling I was talking about. I'm talking about a scrolling like a disk ant itself, a disk-shaped organism. where a round, pawed organism could fit into Earth's phylogeny (not necessarily on the planet) |
