Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Hello speccers.

Thought I'd make a thread where we could discuss the plausibility of the biologies of superpowered characters from comics. The aim is to discuss how likely certain powers could develop and how they could function based on laws of biology, chemisty and physics. Such characters for discussion include Superman's kryptonian biology, the mutations the X-Men gain from the X-gene and Spiderman's genetically engineered biology from a radioactive spider bite.

I saw we mainly discuss comics but other forms of media can be discussed as well, including variations of characters powers from their comic counterparts to their protrayals in TV, movies, games and so on.

The main aim of this discussion though is to have fun. It's basically harmless fun where we can all discuss how X could work, how likely X could develop in the real world and other stuff. We also don't need to follow a pattern, like we move from one character to another. We can discuss one character as long as we want, as often as we want or discuss multiple at once (if we can manage that last one).

To get things started, lets look at Superman. The fact that he's powered by a yellow sunlight would suggest that kryptonians are at least partially ectothermic, and in some continuities Krypton has a larger mass then Earth's explaining why he's so strong.

I also like to think he's in some way photosynthetic. He absorbs yellow sunlight and that basically powers his abilities, so his cells could contain organelles like chloroplasts that take in the light and stimulate the production of hormones or enzymes that give him, say gravity control which would cover his strength and flight

That's basically what I said: he's ectothermic, or at least partially so. Perhaps kryptonians have a combination of both?

How so? Ectothermic means getting one's body heat from external sources rather than generating one's own body heat through metabolic activity. But the solar powering of Kryptonian cells is clearly something entirely different. It sounds as it the cells are working almost like living batteries, absorbing solar energy to empower the Kryptonian and since a yellow sun gives off more solar energy than a red one this empowers them to an extreme degree.

Incidentally, from a realistic perspective a being used to a red sun would probably more likely get increased chance of sunburn rather than superpowers from the extra solar radiation of a yellow sun. Still DC's solar-powered cells concept is still kinda neat even if completely unrealistic.

One way to think about it is that his claws are kept in sheath-like pockets in his arms made of rings of muscles which when contract and tighten push the claws outside of the body, while remaining in place with extra bones between the fingers that prevent them from becoming loose
