Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

well we have diatoms with silica shells/valves, they are unicellular so this thing amy not scale up that well, still it show it can be done.

I don't see why would it be fundamentally impossible, but it might be metabolically inferior to other options.

the important matters are things like how far they can transport water and nutrients...and I would imagine that those aren't innately limited by cellulose vs silica. (so maybe the silica plants grew larger because they were better at water transport?)

well diatoms as unicellular organisms divide, their shells are divided in two vavles and each cell takes one of thee mother cell valve, so wirh generations the cells became smaller. So basically silice at least in this case limits growth but I guess

1-is not too different from chitin in that regard? multicelular fungui and arthopods have found ways to solve that

2-it may not be pure SiO2 shells/wood in multicelulars thoutgh that also means it would look very different

also, to be fair, diatoms don't need to grow much - have they ever tried being something other than plankton?

yeah that is true, I think there are some sessile ones and they may form colonie but they don´t do really a lot
on the topic of silicia there is also soem sort of silice cycle with diatoms and grass

Don't forget the Timor Dragon, which served an intermediary in both size and location.

How might an extra landmass such as Ontong Java in the west Pacific alter oceanic currents and therefore the lands around it.

Has sexual reproduction appeared once or multiple times?
depends on if bacteria stole the ability from other lineages (or bequeathed the ability to non-bacteria)

from what I know probably multiple times or evolved very very early in eukariots or mmaaaybe before

Has sexual reproduction appeared once or multiple times?
In the strictest sense it arose once, in the lineage that led to the last eukaryotic common ancestor (LECA).

But, it has sort of evolved multiple times, because there is one example of a lineage that reverted from solely parthenogenetic reproduction back to the sexual form- Crotoniid mites. If there are more examples I am not aware of them.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.
