Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Registration is free and instantaneous.

How do you normally react when you find that the species you've been working hard on pretty much exists/existed, but you only just found out after you had put all the work in?

Do you abandon the species? Change it? Or just roll with it?

I had the problem with the Protovenator in Jurassic Period For The Future. Originally, it was going to be called Gorgosaurus but I looked it up and when I saw it was a real dinosaur, just clicked the Random Name generator till I found a name that would fit it.

...Gorosaurus is a Godzilla monster. You can totally have dinosaur and Godzilla monster names be the same (see: Titanosaurus).

I had a couple species of gliding/volant compsognathids in Jurassic Split before Yi was discovered- that was pretty cool.

Actually, Gorgosaurus is a Tyrannosaur that ranged from Alberta to Montana (maybe) Link: https://www.newdinosaurs.com/gorgosaurus/

I can see why you'd want to change the name for ID purposes.

That sounds pretty interesting, because it was before it was discovered nobody can say you copied them.

Yeah, I suppose also similarly functioning or shaped forms can evolve convergently without any close relation, so some solutions to a survival problem might appear time and time again, possibly even on different worlds. Sort of like the writing concept that there are very few new ideas, mostly just individual takes on old ideas, even if the idea was thought up independently of previous imaginings of it.

Edit: Didn't pay attention to spell checker, corrected to a wrong word.

When I found out the name Monodonts is already used by narwhals, I just decided narwhals are overgrown archers living on the wrong planet and moved on.

They are not sea unicorns as once believed, they are aliens.
