| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! A niche is not defined by animals but by the lifestyle or type of feeding that such an animal possesses, so primate niche does not really exist, an arboreal animal can cover different niches, frugivores, herbivores, carnivores, omnivores.
This is irrelevant, they are already adapted to be arboreal animals.
To a certain extent, they are not able to move extensively through trees, they can not grasp the branches of the trees with the claws or the tail, which an arboricola animal would need. Again, it is possible, how much I could think that such a change would be avoided is that they were small enough like some mustelids. |

More plausible than the raboons and horrane (if the horrane is a ape, then why does it have a TAIL?) I think that striger looks incredibly thin. |

Could it be possible for cats to evolve a prehensile tail instead? |

Maybe, kinkajou have evolved such a characteristic, so it is not anatomically improbable between carnivora, just a oddity. You know, also forget that there may be the option to evolve an extra "thumb" like the pandas, an elongated sesamoid bone that would take the function to grab. |

A macro predatory tarsier (the only truly carnivorous primate) could be an option? Instead of a cat, a fierce but intelligent predator with opposable thumbs and claw like nails could be quite threatening. |

I think so, although as I interpreted, this conversation seems to point out about to know if the Striger is plausible, i.e. if a feline can evolve arboreal features like a primates, rather than if a arboreal carnivorous animal can evolve. |

Cats could evolve a thumb claw, flexible wrists and a prehensile tail but they are very unlikely to develop a sufficiently mobile shoulder to felicitate brachiation - they would be much more likely to adopt the locomotor patterns of squirrels or bush babies. As said, some cats are already arboreal. |

Yeah, I agree: I could definitely see some cats becoming arboreal, but not like the striger. |
